Scientists devise a method to create waterproof, magnetic, and antibacterial paper

It may look and work like ordinary paper, but it's a lot tougher than it looks

Thanks to scientists from the?Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, time may come when you don't have to worry about spilling water on?books. The researchers have?come up with a way to make paper impervious not only to liquid but also to bacteria while retaining all of its papery properties ? you can still write and print on it like any other paper out there in spite of its super-paper capabilities.

So how does a seemingly normal piece of paper repel liquid and bacteria anyway? The magic happens at the molecular level. The scientists have devised a way so that particular nanoparticles wrap around each minuscule paper fiber like a shell. For instance, adding iron oxide nanoparticles makes the paper magnetic, while adding silver nanoparticles gives it the power to repel bacteria. The same process could also be used to create magnetic and self-cleaning paper, and paper that glows in the dark!

According to head researcher Dr. Roberto Cingolani, antibacterial paper has the potential to be widely used for food packaging and?medical applications. Fluorescent and magnetic paper could be used to make?currency, while waterproof paper could be used to print highly important documents like those that protect cultural heritage. If only the modified paper can also?play music, then it'll be perfect!

Convergence: First our iPhone, now our furniture?

A phone. An internet communicator. A widescreen iPod. That' how Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone, and since then one little device in my hand has gone on to replace so many single-purpose, single-tasking gadgets I'm starting to lose count. The iPhone is basically my mobile office in the palm of my hand. Apple didn't invent that, of course, but the smartphone category in general has really blazed a trail to a convergent, multitasking future that few other things have followed.

Boeing 787 set for first biofuel-powered flight tonight

Biofuel in planes is hardly a new idea, but when Boeing's latest and greatest aircraft gets in on the green game, we take notice. That's right, a ANA 787 Dreamliner is currently preparing to take off from Everett, Washington this evening and will make its way across the Pacific to Tokyo powered by biofuel. Well played, Boeing, we're all for celebrating Earth Day a little early, and it's always good to see someone giving Sir Richard Branson a run for his money.

Asus to unveil new K and N series notebooks at Milano Design Week
ASUS still hasn't clued us in how it'll have us experiencing "infinity," but it is letting some of its other plans for Milano Design Week slip -- namely its N56, N76, N46 and K55 notebooks. Notebook Italia gave the rigs a quick pre-show rundown. The new machines in the N-series lineup are reported to ship with 8GB of DDR3 1333 MHz RAM, up to 1TB HDD space, a Blu-ray or DVD combo drive and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 635m GPU, all driven by various Sandy Bridge CPUs, depending on the model. The K55 mirrors this almost exactly, save for the substitution of a GeForce GT 630m. Notebook Italia says that while these machines are currently slated to launch with Intel's current architecture, Ivy Bridge variants should crop up soon after the CPU hits the market. Curiosity piqued? Check out the source links below for more details, or just stick around -- Design Week is only a couple of days away.

[Thanks, Marco]

BBS version of Google takes you back in time, won't hog your phone line
If the third digit of your birth year is a nine (or heck, a zero), you'll likely never have experienced the true agony joy that was BBS or Bulletin Board Systems. Well, thanks to nostalgic developer Norbert Landsteiner, you can take a glimpse at how your dad got online with an HTML / JavaScript emulation BBS Google. Likewise, more seasoned travelers of the internet can take a trip down memory lane and see what Mountain View's search engine might have looked like "back in the day." All the details are there, right down to the familiar modem tones and ASCII graphics, it's even somewhat functional (when the API isn't over its limit.) So, want to appreciate that browser you complain about on twitter all the time over your LTE connection? Tab on down to the source link for a lesson in gratitude.

Open Office Hours With TechCrunch Europe

officeHours1Doing meetups and attending conferences is great for uncovering new startups and entrepreneurs, but sometimes you just want to sit down over coffee for a few minutes and explain what you're doing. So I'm starting a new series of one-to-one sessions which will hopefully be fairly regular (schedule allowing). I'll be doing "Open Office Hours" sessions at various locations associated with startups, and as I'm based in London that's where I'll mainly be doing them. The idea is you apply for a slot and wait for confirmation. This isn't about long meetings, it's more about getting a quick heads-up and then following up later. Next week I'll be at startup space White Bear Yard, home to Passion Capital and a number of their startups. You can sign up for a slot here. The next session after that will be at Innovation Warehouse, slots here. To follow other sessions, here's my OHours profile or follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Google+.

7digital music store offers Windows Phone users 18 million tracks for purchase
In news that can be filed under "better late than never," 7digital has finally brought its impressive music store to the Windows Phone platform. The company has previously promised a January arrival for its eponymous app, which now offers 18 million song tracks for sale. As you'd expect, it offers shoppers with 30 second previews of each track, and purchased music will automatically sync to one's mobile device. The Windows Phone version of 7digital now joins its Android, BlackBerry and iOS counterparts, but unique to this release is a Metro interface and support for Live Tiles -- which allows users to pin their favorite artists, tracks and albums to the home screen. Shoppers will discover a variable pricing scheme for the DRM-free music, where the majority of albums sell between $5 and $12. Inquiring minds will find the full PR after the break.

Scarlett Johansson Speaks on "Devastating" Divorce, Nate Naylor and More

Scarlett Johansson will soon star in The Avengers as Black Widow. Which is appropriate because, in many ways, the actress is still in mourning over her divorce from Ryan Reynolds.

"It’s horrible. It was devastating. It really throws you," Johansson says in the latest issue of Vogue. You think that your life is going to be one way, and then, for various reasons or whatever, it doesn’t work out."

Johansson and Reynolds finalized the paperwork last summer in "comically amicable" fashion," the gorgeous star adds.

Does she regret the marriage? Not at all. It's "nice to know that you’re capable of loving somebody in that way," Scarlett says. But it still hurts.

“This was something I never thought I would be doing. And there’s no way to navigate it. Nobody can give you the right answer. It’s never anything you want to hear. It’s a very lonely thing. It’s like the loneliest thing you’ll ever do, in some way.”

Since the split, Johansson has been linked to Sean Penn ("We were seeing each other," she admits. “He’s a remarkable person.") and is now dating advertising executive Nate Naylor.

She's also been the victim of a phone hacker who unleashed every guy's dream upon the Internet: Scarlett Johansson nude pics.

It's "terrible," the actress says of imagining strangers looking at her naked body, adding: "You know what I mean? You can’t not think that. Even if they haven’t, you’re paranoid."

Still, Johansson concludes of both the divorce and this picture scandal: “I don’t want pity."
