Thirty-five-hour work-week recommended for parents

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2012) ? Swedish mothers of small children work a lot more now than in the 1970s. This is an important reason why so many parents feel extremely pressured for time. One way to handle the stress is to take advantage of the right for Swedish parents to work half time, according to a new doctoral thesis from the University of Gothenburg.

The author of the thesis J?rgen Larsson suggests shorter workweeks for parents.

J?rgen Larsson's doctoral thesis is based on the observation that parents of small children are in the middle of the most hectic part of their lives. One major reason behind the time pressure is that parents work more hours than in the past. The total paid work time for mothers and fathers of small children has increased by an average of 10 hours per week since the 1970s.

The study, which is based on statistical analysis of 20,000 parents and interviews with 19 fathers, explores parents' temporal welfare. Temporal welfare is not only a matter of how pressed for time a person is; it also has to do with how satisfied you are with your allocation of time between for example paid work, children, partner, work at home and time to yourself. The temporal welfare is significantly lower among parents than among people without children at home.

In order to increase their temporal welfare, some parents choose to work part time, so-called parental part time. However, the gender differences in parental part time are much larger than in parental leave (28% of mothers of small children and 2 % of the corresponding fathers choose to work 30-36 hours per week because they have children). This is not only a problem for women but also for men, as it gives them less space to establish close relationships with their children.

Larsson's interviews with men who work paternal part time reveal that their unusual choice is rooted in a desire for their families to escape time pressure, for their children to not have to spend long days in childcare and for themselves to be present with their families. Yet the decision to work paternal part time is closely linked to social class: 5% of higher grade white-collar dads do, whereas the number for blue-collar and lower grade white-collar workers is only 1%.

'Individual time strategies will not be enough to change this pattern. What we need is a new type of time policy at the political level,' says Larsson. 'Such a policy would have to consider the structural obstacles facing fathers who want to work paternal part time, for example that parents with small children are expected to work full time just like everybody else in most workplaces and that the traditional role of a man is incompatible with part-time work.'

'Personally, I'd like to see a voluntary 35-hour workweek for parents of small children. The parents would get a certain government compensation for lost income, maybe for a couple of years. This would give dads an incentive to reduce their work time since a family where both parents work 35 hours a week would get twice the compensation compared to if only the mother works 30-hour workweeks,' says Larsson.

The thesis has already been publicly defended. It can be downloaded at http://hdl.handle.net/2077/28371 (on page 27-31 in the pdf-file there is a summary in English).

Drake Teases 2 Chainz And Meek Mill Collabos On Tour

'I have very strong alliances with these guys that are on this tour with me,' Drake says of his Club Paradise tourmates.

There are no lightweights on the bill for Drake's upcoming Club Paradise Tour.

While hitting the road with J. Cole, Waka Flocka Flame, Meek Mill, 2 Chainz and French Montana seems like a no-brainer for any rapper looking to rule the summer touring season, Drake insists he didn't choose the hottest young talent just because — there are genuine connections there.

"I have very strong alliances with these guys that are on this tour with me," Drake said during a conference call Tuesday (April 24). "I guess it's safe to say now that anybody that I didn't have a song with before, I have a song with now. I made sure of that."

For those keeping score, Drake and J. Cole partnered up on "In the Morning," a warm-up single from the Roc Nation rookie's 2011 debut album. French and Drizzy teamed up with Rick Ross, on Rozay's "Stay Schemin'," and Waka and the Take Care spitter leaked their strip-club ode "Round of Applause" last September.

Drake hasn't yet released music with Meek Mill or 2 Chainz; those collaborations will come in conjunction with the outdoor tour. "Along with this tour, fans are also going to get some exciting musical material that will probably end up dropping a few days before the tour, so that we can perform it on tour," Drizzy said.

For the Toronto MC, summertime is the best time for new music, and he designed this current amphitheater leg of Club Paradise to come at a time when he plans to release some fresh tunes. "I want to go out on tour with the most exciting artists right now, and I want to make sure that I have songs with all of them," he said. "If we start getting into it and we start really vibing, maybe the last few nights, it's a collaboration show, maybe we do all of our songs onstage together."

Whether fans actually get to see all six MCs rocking at once remains to be seen, but Drizzy does believe that each act will bring their own brand of excitement. Don't arrive fashionably late, he warned.

"On this tour, I encourage people to get there early, because it's more [of] a festival vibe, if anything," he said. "It's one of those days that's it's going to start during the sunlight and the sun's going to drop, it's outdoors, it's summertime ... I want people to make it a day."

The amphitheater leg of Drake's Club Paradise Tour kicks off May 7 in Concord, California.

Thai censors say out, damned spot, out to Macbeth film adaptation

The maker of 'Shakespeare Must Die' is appealing the decision, but Thai bureaucrats are nervous about the movie's political overtones.

The banning of a Thai cinema adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' is causing a stir in Thailand. The censors ruled that the movie ?has content that causes divisiveness among the people of the nation."

In a country where the royal family is protected from criticism by possibly the world's strictest lese-majeste laws (designed to prevent public criticism or ridicule of royals), any drama featuring regicide might be deemed taboo. But?Shakespeare Must Die?seems also to have touched a raw nerve with its depiction of Shakespeare's ambitious but guilt-ridden usurper blended in with scenes of protest and violence redolent of Thailand's recent past.

The country has been beset by on again, off again street protests since 2005. To some, the Macbeth character in the movie is reminiscent of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose apparent vaulting ambition prompted royalist suspicions that he had a real-life anti-monarchy agenda.

Thailand's Culture Ministry told director Samanrat Kanjanavanit that she could only proceed with a bowdlerized version of the government-funded movie, but the filmmakers held their ground.

A red-clad Grim Reaper in the movie was deemed too evocative of the red-shirt demonstrators who took to Bangkok's streets in 2010, in protests that turned violent with more than 90 killed. Another scene inspired by a gruesome massacre of student demonstrators in 1976 was also deemed unacceptable.

Director Samanrat, better known as Ing K., says the censorship makes little sense. "Why do they (the censors) find a 400-year-dead poet so threatening?,? she told the Monitor.? The original Macbeth was penned during a fractious period in English history, probably shortly after the 1605 "Gunpowder Plot," when Catholics aggrieved at religious discrimination sought to assassinate England's King James I, a Scot.

Now, four centuries later, Thailand's volatile politics could hold the key to the censors' anxiety over a now-archetypal tale about how power corrupts man. Mr. Thaksin was ousted from office in a 2006 coup backed by royalist street protestors and faces jail on corruption charges. But his sister Yingluck is the country's prime minister, after her Peua Thai party routed the royalist-leaning Democrats in a 2011 election.

Thailand's 84-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the world's longest-sitting monarch and remains popular, drawing vast crowds onto Bangkok's streets last December for his birthday celebrations. But the combination of color-coded antagonism ("red-shirts" for pro-Thaksin demonstrators, "yellow-shirts" for royalists)? and the King's age makes for nervy bureaucrats, and the censors' actions on the movie come after several recent high-profile jailings for lese-majeste.

While Ms. Yingluck's government has sparked renewed royalist ire by hinting that Thaksin could return to Thailand without having to do jail time, her administration simultaneously pledged not to amend Thailand's lese-majeste laws and to tighten censorship of websites containing allegedly offensive content.

Now it seems even The Bard of Avon is caught up in Thailand's censorship dragnet. Southeast Asia-based documentary filmmaker Bradley Cox saw his?Who Killed Chea Vichea? ? about a Cambodian trade unionist who was murdered in 2004 ? banned in Cambodia. Discussing?Shakespeare Must Die, Mr. Cox told the Monitor that ?it makes one think that the censors must not think that highly of the Thai people, if they feel that they cannot handle the imagery and messages contained in this movie.?

For Ing K., the censors' reaction to the movie says a lot about Thailand, where the government and the opposition are at odds over a reconciliation proposal that, to some, could mean impunity for those involved in recent political violence. ?We don't want to look at ourselves," she lamented, ?we want to forget about painful events in our history."

Google Drive shows up on Android developers device during Google Hangout

Google Drive

By now the existence of Google Drive isn't really a question. It does exist, it's out there and now the Android connection has been confirmed for anyone who may still have had doubts.

During a Google+ Hangout highlighting Android developers, a Google employee using a Galaxy Nexus inadvertently showed off the "Share to drive" option on his device as you can just barely see in the screen cap above.

Google has since yanked down the Google+ Hangout video but many have already caught a look at the icon just sitting there in the sharing options, waiting to be unveiled to the masses.
