Dietary supplements increase cancer risk

AURORA (May 15, 2012) - Beta-carotene, selenium and folic acid taken up to three times their recommended daily allowance, these supplements are probably harmless. But taken at much higher levels as some supplement manufacturers suggest, these three supplements have now been proven to increase the risk of developing a host of cancers.

"It's not that these nutrients are toxic they're essential and we need them, but we need them in a certain balance," says Tim Byers, MD, MPH, professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health and associate director for prevention and control at the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

Byers is senior author of a commentary recently published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute that discusses the clinical and policy implications of the increased cancer risk from high dose dietary supplements.

"We have a window into less than half of the biology of what these nutrients are doing," Byers says. "We say generalized things about them, calling them an antioxidant or an essential mineral, but true biology turns out to be more complex than that. The effects of these supplements are certainly not limited to the label we give them. And, as we've seen, sometimes the unintended effects include increased cancer risk."

Currently the FDA regulates dietary supplements as food, but, as Byers and colleagues suggest, supplements, especially at high doses, are more accurately described as inhabiting a mid-ground between food and drugs. Like drugs, supplement ingredients are biologically active sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.

"We need to do a better job as a society in ensuring that the messages people get about value versus risk is accurate for nutritional supplements," Byers says. "My conclusion is that taking high doses of any particular nutrient is more likely to be a bad thing than a good thing."

Lexus found submerged in family?s swimming pool; drunk-driving suspected

Local police take photos of the submerged Lexus. (Beatriz Diaz/ABC 7)

A 40-year-old California man is accused of driving his Lexus through a cinder block wall and into a family's backyard swimming pool. The man, Modesto Cabral, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Sunday after the 5:25 a.m. one-vehicle crash.

Pieces of the wall were seen stuck in the car's windshield. An orange swimming noodle was floating near the driver's side door.

The La Puente, Calif., family described the bizarre scene to reporters. "We woke up to an awful noise and looked outside, and a car was in the pool," Janelle Diaz, the family's 16-year-old daughter, told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. "We had always joked around about it?that someone was going to end up in the pool?because they've hit our wall before."

The driver apparently drove his silver 2006 Lexus GS430 straight through a "T" intersection?and through the concrete wall. He climbed out of the car through the right front window after the car became submerged.

Authorities used a crane to lift the Lexus out of the pool, according to KABC-TV.

Bobby Brown on Whitney Houston Death: Not My Fault!

Bobby Brown taped an interview with Matt Lauer this morning - for segments on The Today Show that will run Wednesday and Thursday - and made it a priority to defend himself against accusations that his hard-partying lifestyle played a role in the tragic death of Whitney Houston.

"I didn't get high before I met Whitney," Brown says, seemingly blaming HER for HIS problems, although clarifying that he did smoke "weed" and drink prior to their relationship.

But Brown emphasized that he wasn't "the one that got Whitney on drugs at all" and that he feels "terrible" folks think otherwise.

Whitney and Bobby

Because, really people, the important thing here is how Bobby Brown feels.

Houston and Brown were married from 1992 to 2007 and are the parents of a daughter, Bobbi Kristina. The singer told Lauer that their one year of filming Being Bobby Brown had a profound affect on their recreational drug use.

"The reality show gave us a wakeup," he says. "We [were] able to see that our drug use had affected our relationship, had affected the love that we felt for each other."

When did Bobby last see Whitney? About a week prior to her passing. He said she "looked really well" at the time.

Brown - who pleaded out a DUI arrest just this week in order to avoid jail time - said he was shocked and "hurt" when he learned Houston died with cocaine in her system. At the end of the day...

"I love that woman with everything that I am. And I believe she loved me the same way. We wouldn't have been able to make the most beautiful girl in the world - without love. And that's the truth."

Jimmy Kimmel Reacts to White House Correspondents Dinner Speech, Love for George Clooney

He mocked the size of President Obama's ears, the libido of the Secret Service and, of course, Kim Kardashian.

So how did Jimmy Kimmel feel about his speech at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday night?

The talk show host told Entertainment Weekly he thought he was "solid," adding: “The President and the First Lady both said they thought it was very funny."

Kimmel also said it was the second "most terrified" he's ever been, following his first appearance with David Letterman and, as you might expect, it's a "very strange room" in which to use material.

“One person told me afterward they were scared to laugh at a joke because they were sitting next to [House Majority Leader] Eric Cantor, who I didn’t even realize was there," Kimmel said. "She didn’t want him to see her laughing at a joke I made about him. Half the people on any given joke have to keep [the laughter] to themselves.”

As for President Obama's speech? It was "very good, very funny," the comedian said, although a certain actor in attendance drew more attention than the Commander-in-Chief.

“George Clooney is far more popular than any person in Washington D.C.,” Jimmy said. “They were pushing people back [from him]. It was starting to get crazy.”

Microsoft Makes $300M Investment In New Barnes & Noble Subsidiary To Battle With Amazon And Apple In E-books

barnes_and_noble_nook_tablet_1161200_g2Barnes & Noble has found a new, major partner in its fight to get an edge over Amazon and Apple in the market for e-books and the devices being used to consume them: it is teaming up with Microsoft in what the two are calling a strategic partnership, name yet to be determined. It will come in the form of a new subsidiary of B&N that will include all of its Nook business as well as its educational College business. Microsoft is making a $300 million investment in the subsidiary, valuing the company at $1.7 billion in exchange for around 17.6 percent equity in the subsidiary. The news leaves the door open for B&N to eventually spin these off into a separate business altogether -- or even sell them to Microsoft. And it leaves a load of questions about what B&N will do next with the Nook, which is currently built on a forked version of Google's Android platform.
