Google Glass makes catwalk debut at New York Fashion Week

Google Glass makes rare appearance at New York Fashion Week

Google Glass' early luxury brand pricing appears to have put it in good stead, with the elite at New York's Fashion Week getting an early close-up look at Google's wearable camera future. Diane von Furstenberg, who's no stranger to a tech tie-in, has added the lightweight frames to her latest show, using them to make a documentary about fashion's creative process. The project is set to appear on von Furstenberg's Google+ page later this week, but if you're not a world-renowned fashion designer (or model), we'd be paying more attention to that two-year wait.

Executive function tests key to early detection of Alzheimer's, Concordia study shows

Montreal, September 10, 2012 By the time older adults are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, the brain damage is irreparable. For now, modern medicine is able to slow the progression of the disease but is incapable of reversing it. What if there was a way to detect if someone is on the path to Alzheimer's before substantial and non-reversible brain damage sets in?

This was the question Erin K. Johns, a doctoral student in Concordia University's Department of Psychology and member of the Center for Research in Human Development (CRDH), asked when she started her research on older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). These adults show slight impairments in memory, as well as in "executive functions" like attention, planning, and problem solving. While the impairments are mild, adults with MCI have a high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

"We wanted to help provide more reliable tools to identify people who are at increased risk for developing Alzheimer's so that they can be targeted for preventive strategies that would stop brain damage from progressing," says Johns.

The new study was published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society and was funded by the Quebec Network for Research on Aging and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. In it, Johns and her colleagues found that people with MCI are impaired in several aspects of executive functioning, the biggest being inhibitory control.

This ability is crucial for self-control: everything from resisting buying a candy bar at the checkout aisle to resisting the urge to mention the obvious weight gain in a relative you haven't seen in a while. Adults with MCI also had trouble with tests that measure the ability to plan and organize.

Johns and her colleagues found that all the adults with MCI they tested were impaired in at least one executive function and almost half performed poorly in all the executive function tests. This is in sharp contrast with standard screening tests and clinical interviews, which detected impairments in only 15 percent of those with MCI.

"The problem is that patients and their families have difficulty reporting executive functioning problems to their physician, because they may not have a good understanding of what these problems look like in their everyday life." says Johns. "That's why neuropsychological testing is important."

Executive function deficits affect a person's everyday life and their ability to plan and organize their activities. Even something as easy as running errands and figuring out whether to go to the drycleaners or to the supermarket can be difficult for adults with MCI. Detecting these problems early could improve patient care and treatment planning.

"If we miss the deficits, we miss out on an opportunity to intervene with the patient and the family to help them know what to expect and how to cope," says Johns. She is now conducting a follow-up study funded by the Alzheimer Society of Canada and Canadian Institutes of Health Research, along with her supervisor, Natalie Phillips, associate professor in the Department of Psychology and member of CRDH.

Johns hopes her continued research will lead to a better understanding of why these deficits start at such an early stage of Alzheimer's and what other tools could be used for earlier detection of the disease.

Rewarding research: In recognition of the excellence of this research, Johns was awarded the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Aging Age+ Prize.

German euro bailout opponent files new court suit

(AP) ? An opponent of the eurozone's permanent rescue fund said Sunday that he has filed a new complaint to Germany's highest court after the European Central Bank unveiled a program to buy government bonds.

Peter Gauweiler, a backbench lawmaker with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative bloc and a consistent opponent of the government's euro rescue strategy, already is one of several plaintiffs against the ?500 billion ($640 billion) European Stability Mechanism. Germany's Federal Constitutional Court is to rule Wednesday on calls for an injunction blocking the fund.

Gauweiler's office said he filed a new complaint seeking an injunction that would prevent ratification of the ESM unless the ECB reverses Thursday's decision under which the bank could buy unlimited amounts of government bonds ? if countries first seek help from the eurozone fund.

The ECB's move "has created a completely new situation" regarding whether the fund is constitutional, Gauweiler's office said in a statement. It argued that the prospect of the ECB buying bonds makes the overall risk for the German budget "completely incalculable" and that the bank's potential actions would override Parliament's rights to supervise the fund.

The court should if necessary delay Wednesday's planned ruling to consider the new complaint, Gauweiler argued.

Asked about Gauweiler linking the case against the rescue fund with the ECB's actions, Vice Chancellor Philipp Roesler told ARD television: "I personally don't see any direct connection."

Roesler said he hoped the court will approve the European Stability Mechanism because "we need it to stabilize our currency."

"All of Europe is waiting for this important decision," he said.

The fund, which lawmakers approved in June, needs the participation of Germany, Europe's biggest economy.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble made clear last week that he's confident it will get the supreme court's approval. "The ESM does not violate the constitution," he said.

The ECB's bond-buying move has drawn criticism in Germany, where bailing out debt-troubled countries has been generally unpopular. The country's central bank, the Bundesbank, opposes the new program, but Schaeuble and Merkel have signaled their acceptance.

Roesler, who leads the junior party in Merkel's coalition, the Free Democrats, said he remains skeptical and that "long-term bond purchases can never be the right solution" to the 17-nation eurozone's debt crisis.

A,B,Cs of the Chicago teacher strike: new evaluation system looms large

Chicago teacher Alma Hill walks a picket line outside Benjamin Banneker Elementary School??On Monday morning, 350,000 kids in Chicago found themselves without a classroom to bustle about as the city's teachers went on their first strike in 25 years. The sticking point? A new teacher evaluation system.

While Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the local teachers' union disagree on a long list of issues, including planned pay raises and sick day accrual, Emanuel said in a press conference Monday afternoon that the evaluation is the main obstacle to agreement. The new system would eventually use students' standardized test scores as 40 percent of a teacher's yearly evaluation. Teachers who don't improve their students' test scores would be fired.

Many Democrats, including Emanuel's former boss President Barack Obama, embrace this test-based way of judging educators. The president's "Race to the Top" federal program awarded money to states that agreed to rate teachers this way and institute other reforms, like encouraging the creation of more independent charter schools. As of last October, teachers can be dismissed in 14 states based on their students' test scores.

Union supporters argue that evaluating teachers using tests can be tricky, and that this "value-added" measurement can be volatile and inaccurate. Additionally, teachers who have a high proportion of poor students may have a harder time lifting their kids' scores than teachers who work in affluent districts. (About 80 percent of Chicago students qualify for free or reduced federal lunches.) As many as 6,000 teachers would wrongly lose their jobs under the system, says Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Karen Lewis. "Evaluate us on what we do, not the lives of our children we do not control," she said while announcing the strike, according to Reuters.?But reformers counter that teachers should be responsible for helping their students score better on tests, and that current evaluation systems provide no way for ineffective teachers to be identified or removed from classrooms.

Emanuel doubled down on the new evaluation system Monday, as negotiations between CTU and the city dragged on. "What we can't do is roll back what's essential to improving our quality of education," Emanuel said at the press conference, flanked by children. He called the strike "totally unnecessary."

While other city and state leaders have pioneered test-based evaluations without prompting strikes, one sticking point that may make Emanuel's reforms more controversial is a lack of money. The school district is facing a $3 billion deficit over the next few years. Former Washington, D.C., Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee was able to overhaul the city's teacher compensation and evaluation system in part by offering big pay increases for teachers who thrived under the new system. But Emanuel has no such leverage.

"The mayor is pushing for dramatic Obama-era teacher quality reforms, but doesn't have a lot of money to help the medicine go down," Rick Hess of the American Enterprise Institute?told Yahoo News.

Union organizer and former social studies teacher Jackson Potter said one issue the teachers are striking over is poor facilities. Teachers are upset that some schools lack playgrounds or libraries, while others convened in "sweltering" August classrooms without the benefit of air conditioning. Meanwhile, the facilities budget for the city has been slashed. Emanuel dismissed this complaint on Monday, saying the teachers aren't actually striking over facilities. "It's 71 degrees outside," he said. "You don't go on strike for air conditioning."

But the issues leading to the strike have been building for quite a while, said Potter. When current Secretary of Education Arne Duncan ran Chicago's schools, he pioneered a new aggressive approach of closing down schools whose students performed poorly on tests. Duncan's strategy?led some teachers, who felt they were being blamed for teaching in difficult, high-poverty schools, to form a more radical branch of the union, called Caucus of Rank-and-File Educators (CORE). The organization has been instrumental in the current strike, and similar groups have formed in other big cities with strong teacher unions, such as New York and Los Angeles, potentially setting the stage for more high-profile strikes in the future.

"I think we're likely to see other cities going down the same road as Chicago," Hess said.

Randy Jackson on 'Idol': Let's see what happens

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

It's been a summer filled with "American Idol" news and rumors. First Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez announced they were leaving the show. Then came the news that diva Mariah Carey is filling a prime spot on the panel. But what about all those other top talent names that we keep hearing about? Nicki Minaj? Nick Jonas? Enrique Iglesias? And more important, what about the new-season fate of last remaining original judge, Randy Jackson?

Well, one guy who isn't going to clear up those reports is Jackson himself. The veteran talent show panelist visited TODAY Monday morning, but he maintained the mystery.

"Listen, 'Idol's' an amazing show," Jackson said. "My friend Mariah Carey is there. I think she's going to bring a lot of excitement to it."

As for him? "You know, let's see what happens."

Fans will no doubt be on the lookout.

During his TODAY chat, which actually focused on his work with "Taking Diabetes to Heart," a diabetes awareness campaign, Jackson said he has no idea about any other judges either.

"I don't know who else has been confirmed yet or not. I don't really know," he insisted. "But I know Mariah's there!"

Which will just have to be enough for eager "Idol" fans for now.

With all of the changes on the way -- from judges to maybe-mentors -- are you looking forward to the new "American Idol"? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

30 Apps You Need to Run Your Business from Your iPad

This week, TIME Magazine editor-at-large Harry McCracken interviewed himself as a follow-up to his piece on how he had been using his iPad as his primary computer. During the interview he mentions that he still uses his iPad a lot ? so much so that it is still his favourite computer.

Yes, he?s a journalist. But he points out that others have taken up the charge of becoming ?big time? iPad users:

?I?m pretty sure it?s not just journalists who are using iPads as computers. I see people doing it in airplanes. I?ve seen them doing it on the subway. When I?m out and about, strangers run up to ask me about my keyboard. Something?s happening here, and it?s happening quickly??

I can say that I?ve been using my iPad more and more ? and I still have my trusted original version. And yes, I am a writer. But I also am running a business. And you?d be surprised how much you can do on an iPad to keep your business running smoothly. In fact, for many entrepreneurs, you can find everything you need to run your business?on your iPad.

I?ve compiled a list of 30 of some of the best apps (some made for the iPad, some made for the iPhone that will need to be doubled in size upon launch) out there that can help you get well on your way to making your iPad the ultimate business tool.

Evernote

Everything you need to run your business... from your iPad

Evernote is a great all-in-one tool for notes and much, much more.

Glassboard

Glassboard is an easy way to set up and take part in discussion groups between yourself and clients or coworkers.

?

Mail

The app comes standard with your iPad, so you can always have every email wth you no matter where you are.

Agenda Calendar

Far better than the standard Calendar app, Agenda syncs up with a host of online calendars and allows for quick messaging right from within the app.

LogMeIn

Everything you need to run your business... from your iPad

LogMeIn?lets you control your Mac and/or PC right from your iPad. Handy if you need to get access to something on your home or work machine and it?s nowhere in sight.

Skype

Great for video conferences or one-on-one calls, Skype has long been a champion of VoIP. Use it in conjunction with QuickVoice to record your calls and have them handy for later review.

Asana Mobile

Asana is a collaborative task management app that, while designed for the iPhone, can be used on the iPad just as easily. (And it?s much improved in its latest iteration.)

AwayFind

If you don?t want to get every email while you?re using your iPad, using the iOS app for the service AwayFind is a great option.

Pages

Everything you need to run your business... from your iPad

If you want to stick with a seamless document editing experience across all of your Apple platforms, then Pages is the way to go. The ability to sync documents over iCloud has leveled up the app considerably.

Numbers

Much like with Pages, Numbers is a great option for spreadsheet manipulation on the go.

Keynote

With Keynote on your iPad, you can leave the laptop at home and run any presentations right from the iPad.

Prezi Viewer

Prezi Viewer is an alternate presentation/slidedeck app if you?re not into using Keynote. If you want the ability to be platform independent it?s worth a look.

Alarm Clock HD Pro

Everything you need to run your business... from your iPad

Just in case your smartphone (or the hotel wake-up call) fails you, it?s never a bad idea to have Alarm Clock Pro HD Pro installed on your iPad.

Soulver

Soulver is an incredibly intuitive and unique calculator that allows you to save previous calculations, conduct running totals, and much more.

OmniFocus

OmniFocus is widely considered to be one of the best task management apps for iOS. It?s pricey, but it can be as used as a simple to-do list or as a powerful GTD app.

Dragon Dictation

Great for taking notes or writing lengthy missives, Nuance?s app Dragon Dictation has long been the standardbearer when it comes to dictation.

iThoughts HD

While there are many mind mapping apps to choose from, I?ve always found iThoughts HD to be the most versatile and pleasant to use.

Due

Everything you need to run your business... from your iPad

Due is like the iPhone?s Reminders app on steroids. Essential if you need to be reminded of regular tasks, errands, or simple reminders.

Dropbox

Dropbox is essentially an external drive for your iPad. keep any and all important items in your Dropbox folder for easy access on the go, and your iPad?s usefulness increases significantly.

1Password

An essential app for the iPad (and for several other platforms as well). Using 1Password allows you to keep any passwords you have synced (via Dropbox or iTunes) stored on the device so that you?re never searching

TextExpander

Everything you need to run your business... from your iPad

While this app can?t interact with every app on your iPad (the Mac version has a leg up on it in that department), TextExpander is a great app that will save you keystrokes ? and time ? while you use your iPad for various functions.

TripIt

I?ve been using the TripIt serivce for the past few years, and being able to have quick access to all of my travel itinerary on my iPad (often needed when filling out customs forms when going abroad) is incredibly handy. Plus, you can check out the seating on your flights to try to better your assignment if you want, and track any travel points programs you have.

Drafts

One of the newest additions to the iPad (it has been available for the iPhone for some time), Drafts is a great app to capture things quickly ? be it tweets, notes, tasks, or what-have-you. Then when you?re ready, you can move them to a more fitting app (like the aforementioned OmniFocus or Evernote, among others).

GoodReader

Everything you need to run your business... from your iPad

A powerhouse of an app that allows you to have quick access to documents, PDF files and much more. GoodReader lets users sync documents to Dropbox, and adopt a more paperless lifestyle while on the go.

Quickoffice Pro HD

A truly robust office suite, Quickoffice Pro HD lets you create and edit Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentation formats right on the iPad. A better option if you?re in an Office environment than Pages.

Penultimate

This app is a tremendous handwriting app for the iPad. It features both Dropbox and Evernote integration as well as a slew of other sharing options. If you?re still itching to use a pen and paper while on the go, then give Penultimate a try and you?ll feel a little bit more at home.

PDFPen for iPad

Need to manipulate a PDF? Want to be able to grab that signature while on the move? Then PDFPen is your best choice.

Daylite 4

Everything you need to run your business... from your iPad

A high-end CRM manager that has been around on the Mac for some time, Daylite for the iPad is a fully-fledged app, giving you complete project management control right on your iPad (although you will need to have both Daylite and Daylite Server installed on your Mac to use it).

HootSuite

If you?re into managing all of your social networks, then you can?t do much better than HootSuite. Simply input your HootSuite credentials once you?ve installed the app and you?ll be good to go.

There are a number of other apps in the iTunes App Store that you?ll find are perhaps more to your liking, but the point is this: with the advent of?incredible?technology in both software and hardware reaching new heights with the iPad, there?s absolutely no reason you can?t run your business from the device.
