Cellphone could be killing your relationship | Firstpost

London, Oct 6 (IANS) New research has found mobile phones can damage personal relationships merely with their presence no matter they are being used or not.

According to psychologists who conducted the experiments at Essex University, mobile phones automatically trigger thoughts about wider social networks, reducing the level of empathy and understanding in face-to-face conversations, Daily Mail reported.

The two studies found if a mobile was visible during a conversation it caused people to feel less positive towards the person with whom they were talking.

The findings suggest fiddling with one?s cellphone or simply leaving it in view during a romantic dinner or a meeting with a friend could be a serious social faux pas.

?In both studies we found evidence mobiles can have negative effects on closeness, connection, and conversation quality,? said lead researcher Andrew Przybylski.

The studies were the first designed to check the effects of a mobile phone being present on face-to-face communication.

GM says Sept China auto sales up 1.7 percent on year

BEIJING (Reuters) - General Motors Co's auto sales in China climbed only 1.7 percent in September, barely benefiting from its Japanese rivals' plunging sales, in contrast to European and South Korean carmakers.

Deliveries of GM's 'Wuling' micro vans, a brand which accounts for nearly half of GM's China sales, came to 119,510, up a marginal 0.4 percent from a year earlier as a weak Chinese economy hurt small business owners, the Wuling's key buyers.

Sales at GM's car venture with SAIC Motor Corp edged up 3.7 percent, compared with a 17.4 increase in September 2011.

GM appears to have missed an opportunity to step into the gap left by Toyota Motor Corp , Honda Motor Co and Nissan Motor Co , whose sales have fallen as a result of an outbtreak of anti-Japanese sentiment in China, analysts said.

"German and Korean players are the biggest beneficiaries from the woes of the Japanese as they are much more competitive in the SUV segment," said John Zeng, Asia Pacific director for industry consultancy LMC Automotive.

Sales of Japanese cars in China have dropped since protests erupted across the country in mid-September over the Japanese government's purchase of a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea.

Toyota's China sales fell 40 percent in September from a year earlier, and sales at Mazda Motor Corp were down 35 percent.

BMW , however, boosted its China sales by 55 percent in the month, Audi by 20 percent and Mercedes-Benz by 10 percent.

For the first nine months of 2012, GM's sales in China were up 10 percent to 2.08 million vehicles.

Hammer Time Remix: Happy Returns! | The Truth About Cars

Does retail always give you the best return when it comes to cars?

The reflexive answer is ?yes?. But the real answer is ?It depends?.

I?ve seen cars bought at dealer auctions that don?t have a chance in a felon?s hell of reclaiming their outrageous price. This week there was a Barney inspired purple 1998 Dodge Caravan with 118k that sold for $3000. That one will have to be financed to a hardcore Prince fan with a brood. A little while back I also saw this?Farley inspired van?go for $5850. That one is still at the dealer?s lot begging for monetary penance. Of course, these two extreme examples are somewhere between a lightning strike and a snow flurry in Atlanta.

So what?s the norm?

If we?re looking at cash purchases for new cars, the public with rare exception pays a premium over cost.

Most new vehicles sell somewhere between a 1% to 10% premium in the retail markets. But even then the dealers often have to factor out the pigs that simply sit, and this is not always cut and dry. The popular brands will offer a few lackluster models and sometimes an errant option package or two.

The declining ones offer the most prolific of pointless plentitude and will sometimes have a net negative return in the end. In a recessionary market almost everyone has headaches and migraines. But the general public with finance companies in tow offer all the medicine needed to treat it.

Then you have the near-new vehicles. One to three year old models. Again,?new car dealerships?that benefit from strong CPO programs will come out well and the laws of demand and access are still firmly on their side.

A new car dealer has access to closed auctions where only new car dealers of that brand can pick and choose. The manufacturer will usually offer these vehicles at a lower price before offering an ?open auction? to the independent dealers. ?Online inventories are also available to virtually all by the manufacturer du jour. If a car is unique in the market place or attracts a truly affluent clientele (Subaru and Acura are two good examples), they won?t have as many repossessed offerings, fleet lease (Hertz, Avis, etc) or program cars.

Once the three year mark is past the field of choices widens considerably.

On the demand side, two diametric extremes generate the strongest price premiums from the public. The first are?used car?superstores. Carmax is a good example of this, and yes, access to financing sources for every ?superstore? plays a huge role in their success. Many of the larger firms will self-finance and sell their portfolio as asset backed securities (ABS) in the financial marketplace.

The same is true for the buy here ? pay here dealers. However in their model the cars are more varying in quality, and the standards of practice are anywhere from saintly to satanic.

Virtually all of them will use some variation of a GPS or disabler to keep track of their vehicles. Some will work with the financially insecure in times of trouble, as does those superstores we mentioned earlier. Others will pull the rug out after one or two missed payments.

In practice, there are those who want a happy customer and referrals. Others have an army of attorneys (and repo men) to secure their real interests. Unfortunately it?s very hard to judge the BHPH dealer from their cover.

In addition you have the lower end models called ?sleds?, the salvage vehicles, and what I term the ?scratch and dents?. Sleds are generally vehicles that would retail for $5000 or less. Although this area also represents ?finance fodder? for smaller independent?used car dealerships, many larger dealer groups are surprisingly becoming the stronger presence.

A lot of dealers are also simply not very good at the picking and choosing of used cars. Many may try to hire their own buyers or do it themselves. But more and more are resorting to experts who are simply looking for a flat fee for their services.

It?s also not a pick and flip. Most wholesalers these days will have their own mechanics, body shops, detail and recon crews, as well as their own vehicle transport. The standard practice is to sell the good ones, fix the mediocre ones, and resell the unpopular and/or crappy cars at the public and dealer auctions. The larger operations will sell hundreds on a monthly basis.

Wrecked and salvage vehicles, with rare exception, get the best returns at salvage auctions.

Insurance Auto Auctions and Copart are the two 800 pound gorillas of that industry with over 150 locations and nearly four million vehicles between the two. Yet, there are also plenty of independent salvage auctions that continue to do well due to the high fees of both groups.

When a car is worth more dead than alive a salvage auction is where the car will generally go. Sometimes it will be taken apart. Sometimes it will be rebuilt and sold locally? and sometimes they will be exported. The final option has become increasingly popular due to the declining value of the dollar.

Finally, we have what are called the ?scratch and dents?. Generally they?re older vehicles that have susbstantial cosmetic or mechanical defects that keeps them from being retail ready. These are generally sold to the handy and the ignorant.

Public auctions are usually rife with these vehicles and it takes a strong eagle eye, along with a lot of patience, to find the right deal.

I have personally done well at public auctions due to plenty of practice? and the fact that most public buyers at these sales are generally tapped out at two grand. A lot of the cars that I finance for a premium come from this source. Certain wholesalers will also take part at these auctions. If you?re in the periphery like me, you have to pick your battles and make your friends aware of your involvement.

One other thing. County auctions are pretty much their own animals.

I?ve seen great deals with small city government sales? and the exact opposite at large county sales. The more taxi cab companies that come to the sale, the higher your Crown Vic will be. And the more rural folk that come to the sale, the higher your pickup truck will be. Buses are almost exclusively bought by exporters, transit operators, and in the case of scrap? auto recyclers.

Motorcycles and various powersports are their own specialized niche, and the impound auctions (Abandoneds, DUI?s, drug siezed, expired tags) are their own creatures as are the ones offered by title pawns and?larger dealer networks.

Overall, if you?re going to do well as a buyer I would advise you to follow the advice of Wee Willie Keeler and, ?Hit em? where they ain?t.? Competition is always an expense at an auction. No matter where you buy and who you know.

You Against The World ? The Most Important Personal Finance Tips ...

TIP! Instead of the debit card, use credit cards. When you get a credit card, make daily purchases, such as groceries or gas.

It can be difficult to get a handle on your personal finances. You can prevent future financial troubles by keeping a close watch on every aspect of your finances. There are many tools available to you which can make this process easier, so that you can know where your money goes.

TIP! A garage sale is something that you can have to get rid of some things you don?t need and can make you money too. You may even want to consider offering your neighbors the opportunity to consign their unwanted things that you could sell at your yard sale for a small portion of the price.

One of the most important aspects of your FICO score is the balance of your credit cards. The higher they are, the more it will negatively impact your score. When you pay the balance down the score will begin to climb. Ideally, your balance should remain at less than 20 percent of your credit line.

TIP! You can sell old items for a little extra money every week. A working laptop will sell for more than one that doesn?t work.

Give yourself a monetary allowance so that you do not completely deprive yourself while building up your savings account. This cash allowance is perfect for little unneeded purchases. It will help you stay on your budget and still enjoy the little things.

TIP! If eligible, start paying into your Individual Retirement Account. This can better your future personal finances.

You need to know what is going on with your credit report. Check online to find out different methods of checking your report for free. Check your credit yourself at least twice in a year so you can ensure that you have not been a victim of identity theft.

TIP! Almost everyone at some point in time makes a mistake with their finances. Many banks offer a one time fee waiver for individuals who bounce a check the first time, so if this happens to you it is worth making the request.

If you really don?t need a credit card or to borrow money, don?t use these options at all. Try to live your life without debt and put away money for a rainy day. Some of the things you may have to borrow money for are a house or a vehicle.

TIP! There is a chance your credit score may drop when you are working to repair it. A drop in your credit score does not mean you have done something wrong.

There is no get-rich-quick scheme that actually delivers. This is one thing that happens to many marketers. Instead, continue to educate yourself, implementing your own unique techniques and strategies. You will be sure to enjoy your increasing profits.

TIP! To keep your finances in good shape, start by implementing a written budget. Whether on your computer or by hand, start by writing a list of all of your monthly expenses.

When you know where you spend your money, you can avoid trouble later on. You?ll be able to feel great about where you are financially if you know exactly where you stand instead of letting a bank do it

LW Mag ? Hurley SA Junior Champs Day 4

South Africa?s best young surfers enjoyed another perfect day in paradise with the Point at Jeffreys Bay resembling a wavepark as set after set of ideally groomed one to 1.5 metre waves peeled through the hallowed break on the penultimate day of the Hurley SA Junior Champs on Saturday.

Spectacular rides, stirring victories, upsets and heartbreak were seen as all six age groups have been whittled down to the semi-finalists in preparation for tomorrow?s final day when individual and team champions will be crowned, special accolades awarded and history written.

Day 4 Highlights video:

The only girls in action today were the U15 division and Chanelle Botha from Southern KZN, who posted the highest heat score at last year?s event, showed she is the one to beat by recording the highest single wave score of this year?s event so far, a near perfect 9.50 out of 10, as she advanced to the last eight with a convincing heat win.

?I picked up that good one way on the outside and did a few turns, two cutbacks and then a re-entry before I came into the shore-break and pulled off a big closeout move,? Botha said of her best ride.

Two rounds were run in all three boys divisions and in the premier U17 category, Bryce Burness (KZNC) and Benji Brand (WP) each posted two victories as they progressed to the semis. They were joined by Western Province?s Dylan Wichmann and Ethan Pentz, Boland?s Diran Zakarian and Hilton Pelzer, Jason Harris (KZNC) and Dane van Greunen from the hosts Eastern Province, with defending champion Josh Smit (KZNC) losing out in Round 5.

Like their older counterparts, Matt McGillivray (EP) and Stef Burrows (Boland) racked up two wins today and go into tomorrow?s final day with plenty of momentum. McGillivray has EP teammates Tim Baard and Jerry van Wyk with him in the last eight along with KZN Central?s Nthando Msibi and Shane Sykes, Michael Monk (Border) and Jordy Maree (WP).

The U13 boys provided some of the standout performances of the day with defending champion Adin Masencamp (Boland), the leader in the Citro?n Highest Heat Score award and the winner of each of his three heats to date, again on fire. Ethan Fletcher and WP teammate Max Elkington also take heat-winning confidence into the final day and they will be up against Koby Oberholzer (SKZN), Luke Malherbe (Border) and 2011 finalist Jose Faulkner (EP) in his home surf.

The prestigious inter-provincial Freedom Cup is still up for grabs with the holders Western Province, KZN Central and hosts Eastern Province all having plenty of team members in contention for honours and earning points towards their team?s total.

The Red Bull Airshow and its winner-takes-all R5?000 prize-purse will feature the contest?s best aerial competitors flying high above the waves just before the finals start tomorrow.

The top surfer of the event will take home the Hurley Surfer of the Contest title which, in association with All Aboard Travel, earns the winner a R20 000 travel voucher that can be used to visit destinations worldwide.

And there are also the Zigzag Blowing Up Award and R3?000 for the surfer producing the most impressive performances during the event, the Skullcandy Team Spirit award for the provincial team displaying the best camaraderie and support for their teammates and the Citro?n Highest Heat Score title that honours the surfer who posts the biggest heat tally across all divisions throughout the entire five day event with a R3?000 payout.

Daily blogs, interviews, video uploads, images, event schedule and results from the Hurley SA Junior Champs are posted on www.sajuniorchamps.co.za with results and info also found at www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za at the end of each day?s action.

Follow the event via the Hurley Facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/Hurley.ZA, on Twitter @HurleyZA and on Instagram HURLEY_ZA, both using the hashtag #sajuniorchamps.

Bernanke says Washington can learn from baseball team's success

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal Reserve chief and avid baseball fan Ben Bernanke saluted the playoff-bound Washington Nationals on Friday as an example for gridlocked U.S. government leaders of how to succeed by making wise, patient decisions.

"People decry the absence of leadership in Washington these days. My response: Look no further than the home-team dugout at Nationals Park," the Fed chairman wrote in an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal's online edition.

The Nationals just completed the best regular season in their eight-year history, winning the National League Eastern Division with the best record in Major League Baseball. The team begins the playoffs on Sunday in hopes of securing the first World Series berth for a Washington team since 1933.

Wrangling between congressional Republicans and Democratic President Barack Obama has stalled action to strike a deficit-reduction deal to avoid a year-end "fiscal cliff." Without an agreement, Bush-era tax cuts will expire and automatic spending cuts will kick in, which Bernanke and others warn could tip the country back into recession.

Bernanke can often be seen among the crowds at the Nationals' ballpark in sight of Capitol Hill and has rooted for the team through thick and thin since it moved to the city from Montreal in 2005.

He said the formula for the team's success rested heavily on the wisdom and experience of its manager, Davey Johnson.

"He combines the best of two seemingly at-odds managerial traditions," Bernanke wrote, noting how Johnson used the latest statistical advances as well as old-fashioned scouting.

"Davey is also really good at identifying and nurturing talent. Most strikingly, he has shown himself willing to sacrifice short-term tactical advantage for the long-term benefit of bolstering the confidence of a player in whom he sees great potential," Bernanke said, citing how Johnson gave underperforming players a chance to improve.

"Many of us in Washington could learn a thing or two from the Nationals' approach," Bernanke said.

Marketing With Articles: How To Write Articles That Ezine Editors Will ...

Author: Steve Shaw | Total views: 139 Comments: 0
Word Count: 888 Date: Sat, 6 Oct 2012 12:44 PM

It is a special treat to have one of your free reprint articles chosen to appear in an ezine (an email newsletter). Your article is sent directly to the inbox of however many people are subscribed to the ezine. That means that perhaps tens of thousands of people will be looking at your article within a few days time and potentially clicking the link in your resource box.

It's a huge opportunity, so it's worth it to take your quality standards up a notch and write content that ezine editors will be attracted to.

Ezine editors will often have different (more strict) criteria for publication than website owners. They bear the responsibility of trying to please their list subscribers, and if they don't then they run the risk of having them unsubscribe. Since ezine editors only include one or two articles per publication, they are really scrutinizing articles to see which ones live up to their requirements.

How can you write and submit articles that will be attractive to ezine publishers? Here are 7 tips for you:

1- Keep your word count between six hundred and eight hundred words.

Ezine editors are looking for quality content that has some meat to it. They also usually work with word count limits, so writing an excessively long or short article makes it less likely that they will choose your article.

2 - Write articles that teach the reader something practical, rather than trying to sell to them through the article.

You've got strong competition when it comes to being published in an ezine. The number of articles in the newsletter are limited to just one or two each week, and the ezine editor wants to be sure that those articles are useful to his audience.

Resist any urge to use the article to draw attention to your business. Instead, use your article to teach the reader how to do something. Remember that your resource box will be included in the ezine. That's the spot where you can try to draw attention to your website or business.

3 - Make a resource box that will work for you.

In an ezine, the resource box gets extra attention--remember it may be the only piece of content that the reader is seeing. If the article was helpful, then the reader will look to the resource box to see who wrote it and find out more about him or her.

Be sure to write a resource box that provides good information about you and your business and also inspires the reader to click the link going to your website. The extra time you take constructing your resource box will pay off with click throughs down the road.

4 - Don't write an article that is part of a series.

Those would be the sorts of articles that say "Part 2", "Part 3" etc in the title. When you indicate that your article is in some way dependent on or attached to other articles, it makes it less likely that an ezine editor will choose your article. If he were to put an article that had "Part 4" in the title, he knows that his readers might be confused as to where the other parts were. It also might turn off his readers in that they figure that they won't know what's going on in part 4 because they haven't read the other parts.

5 - Write a title that grabs the reader's attention and states what the article is about.

The title should give accurate information about what the article will talk about. If you site 5 tips in your title, the article needs to contain 5 tips. Whatever the article is about, you need to indicate that in the title. Don't be cryptic or cute by creating a mysterious title--that tactic usually does not work in getting a reader's attention.

6 - Figure out what the people in your target audience need to learn, and then write content to satisfy those needs.

You can do this by simply asking questions of your customer or clients, or by making notes of the questions that they ask you. What are they confused about? What do they need to learn how to do related to your niche? These are the types of topics that you should be covering in your articles.

You can also do basic keyword research to get this type of information--if you can see what your target readers are searching for in Google, then you can get a good idea of what they need.
