Trio of D-League Alum Fighting for a Spot With Bucks in NBA Preseason

Alando Tucker, Orien Greene, and Eddie Gill, are all basketball journeymen who have paid their dues in the NBA D-League in the past. Could their wealth of experience over the years help them sneak onto the Bucks roster?

At the beginning of the month, more and more players with D-League experience began signing with NBA teams in hopes of making a positive enough impression during training camp.

But as teams begin to fine tune their rosters and more seriously mold a competitive team towards opening night, some of these same D-League alumni have failed to make the cut.

With the NBA preseason now officially upon us, coaching staffs are putting different units on the floor to explore who fits well with who, and which of the players still remaining from the camp roster can make surprising impacts.

As other D-League prospects have been forced to pack their backs and prepare for another season in the minors, Alando Tucker, Orien Greene, and Eddie Gill have been left still standing in Milwaukee. All three D-League alum are fighting for a spot on the Bucks, and have at the very least, made it thus far, as they try to do so.

No longer considered "prospects" themselves, the trio of guards have all had their fair share of chances to break into the NBA. As a group, Tucker, Greene, and Gill have a combined fifteen "seasons" of experience in The Association, though much of that time has been spent between stints as they simply try to break in.

Given that they're all veterans of sorts in their own right, the experience each has amassed over the years could be a huge asset to them. The Bucks have been on the NBA playoff bubble for quite some time, just missing out on that final spot again and again. That said, poised to boast a roster balanced with youth and experience this coming season, perhaps this is the year Milwaukee finally makes noise.

And as they look to put a competitive team on the floor, each player's own ability to keep composure throughout is undoubtedly crucial. When the starters come out, the Bucks can't afford younger players getting overwhelmed and slipping up under the bright lights in the bigger moments. Tucker, Greene, and Gill have all been on the big stage before, can handle all the hype, and will likely make choices similar to that of a savvy NBA veteran when they hit the hardwood.

The NBA D-League is not a place where superstars emerge, rather a league where strong niche players ready to fulfill their roles, develop. The experiences each guard has had over the years have certainly prepared them enough to be a role player on an NBA team, giving a franchise quality minutes, whether it be in garbage time, or instead while spelling the first unit.

Having most recently played overseas in Australia, Gill last played in the D-League during the 2008-09 season. Tucker joined a bevy of players with NBA experience on the Texas Legends last season, averaging 14.5 points per game on 44% shooting from the field. Greene, the final journeyman of the bunch, had a strong showing in the NBADL postseason for the Los Angeles D-Fenders after averaging 9.2 points and 4.5 assists per game in the regular season.

Tough decisions lie ahead for Sporting KC head coach Peter Vermes

Espinoza injury adds to starting lineup questions for Peter Vermes as the playoff race heats up

With no regular season match on the schedule until Sporting Kansas City head to New York to face off against the Red Bulls on October 20th, Kansas City will have time to rest and get healthy as they prepare for the 2012 MLS playoffs.

Seeing as Sporting KC midfielder Roger Espinoza will be out for the next few weeks with a right ankle sprain suffered at the end of a 1-1 draw against the Columbus Crew last weekend, the two-week international break couldn't have came at a better time for Sporting Kansas City.

The club is saying that there is a chance that Espinoza might be healthy enough to play when Sporting KC take on the New York Red Bulls, but that seems like an overly optimistic viewpoint.

Ankle injuries are a tricky deal, and one would have to imagine that the club will not risk taking the chance of Espinoza re-injuring his ankle if he's not 100 percent ready to return to action.

Espinoza has been a vital cog in Sporting Kansas City's success this season, and he will have to play a pivotal role for Kansas City if they are to reach the MLS Cup in 2012.

Simply put; there is no one on the roster that can give Sporting KC what Espinoza provides, which means head coach Peter Vermes has a tough decision to make in regards to Kansas City's midfield come October 20th.

The most obvious choice would appear to be moving Graham Zusi from the winger position back to his natural position in the midfield. In that scenario Zusi would team with Paulo Nagamura and Julio Cesar in the middle, while either Jacob Peterson or Bobby Convey would fill the winger role opposite Kei Kamara.

Convey, who has been out since August with a hamstring injury, should be ready to go by the time Sporting KC play New York, but Peterson seems the more likely candidate to start as Vermes will probably opt to ease Convey back into playing action.

Another option would be to keep Zusi out on the wing, and take a chance inserting a less-proven player into the midfield. Someone along the lines of Oriol Rosell, or Michael Thomas. Peterson and Convey have both played midfield on occasion in the past, and Vermes mentioned last week that Lawrence Olum has experience playing the holding midfielder role, so that option is on the table as well.

Another dilemma Vermes is facing is who he will pick to team up with Matt Besler in the center of Sporting KC's defense.

Olum has started at center back the last three matches, with 2012 MLS All-Star Aurelien Collin on the bench. It's an interesting situation, given the fact that, by all accounts, Collin has been healthy and ready to play. The center back duo of Besler and Collin has been one of the better tandems in Major League Soccer this season, which makes it all the more puzzling as to why Vermes would choose to start Olum over Collin, given the fact that Sporting KC are fighting to stay in first place in the Eastern Conference.

For his part, Olum has done a respectable job taking over for Collin, but it was also Olum who failed to mark up on Columbus Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven when Gaven scored the equalizing goal in the 1-1 draw last weekend.

There has been speculation that Collin has been in Vermes' dog house as of late. The rumor flying around the internet was that Collin left the country to attend a wedding and didn't inform Vermes that he was leaving.

Both Collin and Vermes have denied that there is anything more to the situation other than that Vermes currently sees Olum as the better option at the moment, but surely there has to be something more to this particular scenario seeing that Collin is one of the better center backs in MLS, he's healthy and ready to contribute, and yet, he is not in the Starting XI.

Vermes deciding to make a change at center back in favor of Olum at such a critical part of the regular season does seem a little odd with the Chicago Fire only trailing Sporting KC by three points in the Eastern Conference with two matches remaining.

I imagine that the Olum experiment ended in Columbus, Ohio. Expect Collin back in the starting lineup on October 20th against the Red Bulls.

European Union wins Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO (Reuters) - The European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for promoting peace, democracy and human rights over six decades in an award seen as a morale boost as the bloc struggles to resolve its economic crisis.

The award served as a reminder that the EU had largely brought peace to a continent which tore itself apart in two world wars in which tens of millions died.

The EU has transformed most of Europe "from a continent of wars to a continent of peace," Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said in announcing the award in Oslo.

"The EU is currently undergoing grave economic difficulties and considerable social unrest," Jagland said. "The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to focus on what it sees as the EU's most important result: the successful struggle for peace and reconciliation and for democracy and human rights."

Jagland praised the EU for rebuilding Europe from the devastation of World War Two and for its role in spreading stability after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

While welcomed by European leaders, the award will have little practical effect on the debt crisis afflicting the single currency zone, which has brought economic instability and social unrest to several states with rioting in Athens and Madrid.

On the streets of the Greek capital, where demonstrators have burned Nazi flags to protest against German demands for austerity, the award was greeted with disbelief.

"Is this a joke?" asked Chrisoula Panagiotidi, 36, a beautician who lost her job three days ago. "It's the last thing I would expect. It mocks us and what we are going through right now. All it will do is infuriate people here."

The prize, worth $1.2 million, will be presented in Oslo on December 10. It was not immediately clear who from the EU would be there to collect the cheque and what it would be spent on.

CONCEIVED IN SECRET

Conceived in secret at a chateau near Brussels, what is now the European Union was created by the 1957 Treaty of Rome, signed with great fanfare in the Italian capital's 15th century Palazzo dei Conservatori.

The six-state 'common market' it founded grew into the 27-nation European Union ranging from Ireland's Atlantic shores to the borders of Russia.

At the time the Cold War was in full swing after Soviet tanks put down an anti-communist rebellion in Budapest. Western countries led by the United States had formed NATO and the Kremlin responded with the Warsaw Pact.

But the EU is now mired in crisis with enormous strains between capitals over the euro, the common currency shared by 17 nations and created to further economic and monetary union.

Politicians in Germany, one of the main forces behind the foundation of the EU, were delighted with the award.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe's most powerful leader, said it was a "wonderful decision". French President Francois Hollande, whose country has with Germany formed the EU's main axis of power, said it was an "immense honor".

Helmut Kohl, the chancellor who reunified Germany and pushed the country into the euro, said: "The Nobel Peace Prize for the EU is above all a confirmation of the European peace project,"

After centuries of war on the continent the EU has been at peace within its borders, but its effort to stop war in former Yugoslavia -- an initiative hailed by one minister as "the hour of Europe" -- was a failure.

The British government, less committed to the European ideal than other EU members, made no comment on the prize. Ed Balls, a senior member of the opposition Labour Party, remarked sarcastically: "They'll be cheering in Athens tonight, won't they?"

Nigel Farage, leader of Britain's fiercely eurosceptic UKIP party, added: "This goes to show that the Norwegians really do have a sense of humor."

"I FIND THIS ABSURD"

In Madrid, Francisco Gonzalez expressed bafflement. "I don't see the logic in the EU getting this prize right now. They can't even agree among themselves," the 62-year-old businessman said.

In Berlin, public relations worker Astrid Meinicke, 46, was also skeptical. "I find it curious. I think the EU could have engaged itself a bit better, especially in Syria," she said, near the city's historic Brandenburg Gate.

In the home of the peace prize, many Norwegians are bitterly opposed to the EU, seeing it as a threat to the sovereignty of nation states. "I find this absurd," the leader of Norway's anti-EU membership organization Heming Olaussen told state broadcaster NRK.

Norway has twice voted "no" to joining the EU, in 1972 and 1994. The country has prospered outside the bloc, partly thanks to huge oil and gas resources.

Among those tipped to win was Russia's small Ekho Moskvy radio, a frequent critic of the Kremlin. Editor in chief Alexei Venediktov conceded the prize to a worthy winner.

"We are only 115. They are 500 million. It is an honor (to lose to the EU)," he told Reuters.

AEG to allow booking of adjacent seats for friends

(AP) ? AEG, the sports and entertainment giant that is up for sale, is making it easier to book concert and sports tickets for friends without having to pay for them all at once.

The owner of Staples Center and the National Hockey League's Los Angeles Kings is rolling out the feature, called AXS Invite, at some of its owned and operated venues starting this month.

The service allows ticket buyers to pay for their own seats and then reserve several adjacent ones online.

The purchaser then invites friends through Facebook or email, and the friends have 48 hours to accept or decline the invitation. They in turn register on the site and pay for the tickets themselves. Unsold tickets will go back up for sale.

"For us and for the artist and the venue, it's really about finding a way to sell more tickets," said Tom Andrus, general manager of AXS.com. "For the customer it's a way of making it more convenient."

AXS Invite won't be available immediately when tickets are first put on sale, which means it probably won't be useful for quickly sold-out shows. Andrus said the feature could be available within hours or the next day, but certainly within 48 hours of a given sale time.

AEG is rolling out the service for a number of upcoming shows, including a run of "Cirque du Soleil: Dralion" at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif., from Oct. 24-28.

AEG launched its ticketing arm, AXS, about a year ago and has so far changed 18 of its approximately 100 owned and operated venues over to AXS from ticketing competitor Ticketmaster. It plans to roll AXS out at most of its major venues including Los Angeles' Staples Center by the first half of next year.

AEG won the right to use Ticketmaster's platform as a condition for getting government clearance of the combination of Ticketmaster and Live Nation Entertainment Inc. in 2010. But it still has to pay fees to use it. Changing venues to its own AXS platform saves on these fees, and also gives AEG a closer relationship with its customers.

Last month, Denver-based Anschutz Co. said it was putting AEG up for sale even as it moved ahead with plans to build a stadium in Los Angeles in the hopes of attracting a National Football League team.
