Social Security benefits to go up by 1.7 percent ...

WASHINGTON (AP) ? More than 56 million Social Security recipients will see their monthly payments go up by 1.7 percent next year.

The increase, which starts in January, is tied to a measure of inflation released Tuesday. It shows that inflation has been relatively low over the past year, despite the recent surge in gas prices, resulting in one of the smallest increases in Social Security payments since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975.

Social Security payments for retired workers average $1,237 a month, or about $14,800 a year. A 1.7 percent increase will amount to about $21 a month, or $252 a year, on average.

Social Security recipients received a 3.6 percent increase in benefits this year after getting none the previous two years.

About 8 million people who receive Supplemental Security Income will also receive the cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, meaning the announcement will affect about 1 in 5 U.S. residents.

Social Security also provides benefits to millions of disabled workers, spouses, widows, widowers and children.

"The annual COLA is critically important to the financial security of the (56) million Americans receiving Social Security benefits today," said Nancy LeaMond, AARP's executive vice president. "Amid rising costs for food, utilities and health care and continued economic uncertainty, the COLA helps millions of older Americans maintain their standard of living, keeping many out of poverty."

The amount of wages subjected to Social Security taxes is going up, too. Social Security is supported by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100. That threshold will increase to $113,700 next year, resulting in higher taxes for nearly 10 million workers and their employers, according to the Social Security Administration.

Half the tax is paid by workers and the other half is paid by employers. Congress and President Barack Obama reduced the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent for 2011 and 2012. The temporary cut, however, is due to expire at the end of the year.

Some of next year's COLA could be wiped out by higher Medicare premiums, which are deducted from Social Security payments. The Medicare Part B premium, which covers doctor visits, is expected to rise by about $7 per month for 2013, according to government projections.

The premium is currently $99.90 a month for most seniors. Medicare is expected to announce the premium for 2013 in the coming weeks.

"If seniors are getting a low COLA, much of their increase will go to pay off their Medicare Part B premium," said Mary Johnson, a policy analyst at The Senior Citizens League.

By law, the increase in benefits is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W, a broad measure of consumer prices generated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It measures price changes for food, housing, clothing, transportation, energy, medical care, recreation and education.

Over the past year, housing costs have gone up 1.4 percent but home energy costs have dropped by 3.8 percent, according to the CPI-W. Medical costs, which tend to hit seniors harder than younger adults, have increased by 4.4 percent.

Gasoline prices have climbed by 6.8 percent, but much of that increase happened in the past month, so it is not fully reflected in the COLA for Social Security.

To calculate the COLA, the Social Security Administration compares the average price index for July, August and September with the price index for the same three months in the previous year. The price index for September ? the final piece of the puzzle ? was released Tuesday.

If consumer prices increase from year to year, Social Security recipients automatically get higher payments, starting the following January. If prices drop, the payments stay the same, as they did in 2010 and 2011.

Since 1975, the annual COLA has averaged 4.2 percent. Only five times has it been below 2 percent, including the two times it was zero. Before 1975, it took an act of Congress to increase Social Security payments.

Most older Americans rely on Social Security for a majority of their incomes, according to the Social Security Administration. Over the past decade, the COLA has helped increase incomes for seniors, even as incomes have dropped for younger workers.

From 2001 to 2011, the median income for all U.S. households fell by 6.6 percent, when inflation was taken into account, according to census data. But the median income for households headed by someone 65 or older rose by 13 percent.

Freeplane: Solid Mind Mapping but You May Need a Map

Freeplane is an application for creating mind maps. A mind map is the doodling you draw with shapes and other symbols around words connected with lines to make charts representing your thoughts and ideas on a particular topic or project. It's not often that productivity software makes the task at hand more difficult than old-fashioned methods, but in this case it might be easier to draw a mind map on paper than to do so using Freeplane.

Richard Sherman On Mocking Tom Brady: 'I Don't Regret Anything About The Situation'

RENTON, Wash. (AP) -- Richard Sherman doesn't shy away from talking, whether on the field trying to rattle the receivers he's defending or just chatting in the Seattle Seahawks locker room.

And Sherman didn't avoid talking on Tuesday, albeit with a slightly more subdued tone after two days during which his comments following the Seahawks' victory over New England drew national attention.

Sherman said he had no regrets about his strong comments and messages from his Twitter account after Seattle's 24-23 victory. While some of his postgame comments in the locker room became instant sound bites, it was a tweeted picture that drew the most attention.

Sherman sent a picture from his account that showed him talking in the face of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady that included an added message and a question "U Mad Bro?" The second-year cornerback said he was directed to remove the tweet from his Twitter account, but didn't regret any of the attention that has come his way.

"I don't regret anything about the situation. It is what it is," he said.

Quickly known around the league for his chatting on the field, Sherman and Brady started talking during the second half of Sunday's game when the Patriots were leading 23-10. The message from Brady was for Sherman to seek him out after the game, which he did after Seattle scored 14 points in the final 7:31 to shock the defending AFC champs and drop them to 3-3. That led to captured images of Sherman talking to Brady after the game.

But Sherman was still fiery when reporters were let into the locker room and he popped off about what he felt was disrespect from national pundits toward the Seahawks.

"It's not a shock for us. We believe we have a great ballclub and we believe we can play with anybody," Sherman told reporters after the victory. "NFL Network and all of these pundits think they know everything and we keep shutting them up week, by week, by week, by week. They thought (New England) was the greatest ball club to step on the earth. They're 3-3, .500. I don't know what great ball club is 3-3."

Sherman tried to clarify Tuesday that his remarks weren't meant to be directed at Brady, but instead toward those not giving respect to Seattle's defense that was ranked as the best in the league entering last week.

"It was definitely more about us than about him," Sherman said. "I'm talking about our back end and the three Pro Bowl players we have back there, how great our (defensive) line is playing, how awesome our linebacker play is, how great our rookie quarterback did against Tom Brady."

Speaking to Dial Global Sports before Monday night's game, Brady avoided speaking directly about Sherman's comments.

"He's a very good player and I have a lot of respect for that defense and certainly that secondary," Brady said. "They play very well together. My dad taught me at a young age to play with class and respect and give my opponents respect, and certainly I have a lot of respect for the Seahawks."

Sherman was the only member of Seattle's secondary not selected for the Pro Bowl last year, yet he might be playing the best of anyone back there this year. According to STATS LLC, Sherman is tied with Chicago's Tim Jennings for the NFL lead in passes defensed with 10. His three interceptions through six games are nearly equal to his four picks from last year.

Even when he was just getting his first chances at starting a season ago, Sherman was noticed for having a confident swagger most rookies lack. With the success he's had individually and the success of the Seahawks defense, that swagger has only grown to where some may see it as cockiness.

Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said Tuesday that just last week he was asked if he thought Sherman was cocky.

"I said, 'No he's not. He's confident, he's not cocky.' Cocky people don't want to learn, Richard wants to learn. And then all this came up," Bradley joked. "He's just so passionate and you've got to understand their mindset. He's out there 58 passes where Tom Brady is trying to attack him because of the coverage we play. And you can imagine having that mindset and how high strung you are and how ready to go you have to be on every play and it was just one of those things where his passion showed."

Re-opening of sports pavilion in South Ockendon | Your Thurrock

SPORTS clubs that have used the South Ockendon Recreation Ground facilities in the past and have found them to be dilapidated and antiquated can now look forward to enjoying first class changing rooms, toilet facilities and kitchen and social areas thanks to the Veolia Mardyke Trust providing the funding to refurbish and extend the Sports Pavilion.

At ?275,000, this is the largest grant that the Veolia Mardyke Trust has ever made to any project, and it follows projects that the Trust has supported in the park for over 13 years ?including improving the children?s play area, tennis courts, bowls green, car parking, equipment for the football and cricket clubs, and even a pedestrian bridge linking the site to Brandon Groves.

The three main users of the pavilion: South Ockendon Bowls Club, Brandon Groves Football Club, and Belhus Cricket Club ? have worked very closely with the Trust and with Thurrock Council and architect Roland Hobbes on an imaginative scheme that has used as much as possible of the old building, while transforming it so that it can now also be used by other community groups, and can provide a base for events and activities in the park.

The Friends of Ockendon Rec are a group of local residents and users, together with Council staff, Wendy Curtis and the South Ockendon Community Forum, who formed three years ago and have held events on the park as well as campaigning for improvements to it, all of which have helped reduce anti social behaviour and make the park more attractive for all users.

To celebrate the opening of the Sports Pavilion the Friends Group have arranged a special celebration day on Saturday 27th October 2012 from 12.30pm., including the official re-opening and naming of the pavilion by Councillor Charlie Curtis, the Chair of the Veolia Mardyke Trust.

All three sports clubs are taking part in the event, with sports coaches in attendance, as well as Novelty Races, Welly Wanging, Childrens Entertainer, Nail and Face painting, childrens crafts and many other attractions. Ockendon Scouts and Guides are also assisting with activities, and there will be a special appearance by ?The ECB Cricket Factory?, in partnership with Clydesdale Bank, a free activity for children to try their hand at cricket.
