Thomas Jefferson Was Not a Monster

Thomas Jefferson, 1805 Thomas Jefferson, 1805

Painting by Rembrandt Peale/New York Historical Society/Wikimedia Commons.

Almost 20 years have passed since the publication of Jeffersonian Legacies, a collection of essays published on the occasion of the Founding Father?s 250th birthday that ushered in a new era of Jefferson scholarship. What were modern Americans to make, the book asked, of the 18th-century slaveholding patriarch who could not envision a multiracial America but who nonetheless authored America's creed?a vision that has inspired people the world over? At the very least, one had to be, the book suggested, conflicted about the man.

Henry Wiencek is not at all conflicted. He loathes Thomas Jefferson. In Master of the Mountain: Thomas Jefferson and His Slaves, his attempted takedown of the man, the third president appears as a demonic figure warped one summer day by a sudden discovery that being a slaveholder could pay. I?ll detail how Wiencek arrives at his bizarre proof of a Jefferson who suddenly becomes Simon Legree, but I should say up front that this book fails as a work of scholarship. This is surprising. I favorably reviewed Wiencek's book about George Washington, Imperfect God, and I admire The Hairstons: An American Family in Black and White. What happened with Master of the Mountain?

The book's tone and presentation betray a journalistic obsession with ?the scoop.? Getting the scoop can be the life?s blood of journalism. It does not work so well for writing history, which is not always (or almost ever, really) about discovering things previously unknown. This sensibility leads Weincek astray in a number of ways. To begin with, it compels him to write as if he had discovered, and was writing about, things that had not been discovered and written about before. In truth, all of the important stories in this book have been told by others.

There is nothing inherently wrong with recycling stories. All historians do, and that is to be expected. But Wiencek rarely adds insights to these recycled stories, and when he offers interpretations, they are usually wrong-headed. It often seems that he is ignoring all the things that have been written about Jefferson and slavery over the past 30 years, consigning it to a claim that ?scholarly consensus? is that ?Jefferson managed his plantations with a lenient hand.?. In fact, scholars have known, and written, for years about whipping at Monticello.

Wiencek?s primary scoop?upon which his thesis depends and his publisher is marketing this new history?is that he has discovered why Jefferson went from opposing slavery to enthusiastically supporting the institution. It happened, Wiencek says, in the summer of 1792:

As Jefferson was counting up the agricultural profits and losses of his plantation in a letter to President Washington in 1792, it occurred to him that there was a phenomenon he had perceived at Monticello but never actually measured. He proceeded to calculate it in a barely legible, scribbled note in the middle of a page, enclosed in brackets. What Jefferson set out clearly for the first time was that he was making a 4 percent profit every year on the birth of black children.

Of course, Weincek could not possibly know what ?occurred to? Jefferson as he did his calculations. And note the reference to the ?barely legible, scribbled note,? as if he had ferreted out a detail that only the most diligent of researchers would have found. He then quotes Jefferson: ?I allow nothing for losses by death, but, on the contrary, shall presently take credit four per cent. per annum, for their increase over and above keeping up their own numbers.?

The problem with what Wiencek calls the ?4 percent theorem? or ?formula? is that Jefferson was not speaking about his slaves at Monticello?he was speaking about farms in Virginia generally. The quoted ?four per cent? line is from his ?Notes on Arthur Young?s Letter to George Washington,? written, while Jefferson was serving in Washington?s Cabinet, in response to a request for a comparison of free labor to enslaved labor. Jefferson, who could never resist an opportunity to count and compute, joined in to ?calculate, in the Virginia way, the employment? of slave labor. When he speaks of allowing ?nothing for losses by death,? he is explaining what variables are going into his calculations about how to determine the value of enslaved labor?not opining on any policy he had at Monticello. In a later letter to Washington, Jefferson noted that ?being at such a distance from the country of which I wrote,? he utilized his own time-weakened memories of life in Virginia. ?I therefore hazarded the calculation rather as an essay of the mode of calculating the profits of a Virginia estate, than as an operation which was to be ultimately relied on.?

Jefferson had no ?4 percent theorem? or ?formula.? This lawyer and lifelong slaveholder had no epiphany in 1792, approaching age 50, that the babies of enslaved women increased his capital. Jefferson?s thoughts about slavery cannot be treated in such a reductive manner.

We can come down from Wiencek?s version of high theory to see in another context how he reasons and solves problems. He suggests that Jefferson purchased collars?iron spiked vises?for slaves. Follow Wiencek?s logic and note the incredible inferential leaps required to link these disparate occurrences into a chain: Jefferson?s father, Peter, advertised for a runaway slave (in 1751) who was wearing an iron collar; Jefferson must have seen enslaved people being collared when he was growing up; while in France in the 1780s, Jefferson wrote to Nicholas Lewis, the manager of his farms, telling him to use ?extraordinary exertions?; and then??the manager?s expense accounts in 1791 include a line item for the purchase of ?collars.?? Wiencek?s endnote explains that he had ?at first? thought the reference was to ?horse collars.? That view changed after Wiencek noticed that Jefferson wrote ?leather collars? or ?horse collars? and ?Lewis would have been similarly specific.? Therefore, enslaved people at Monticello must have been put in iron collars.

Plato said "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." This is particularly true if you meet someone using a BlackBerry, perhaps the hardest of all battles. But they don't deserve pity. Around BlackBerry users, we must remember manners, courtesy, and a few basic rules of kindness. More »

What is Solavei-A Solavei Business Review | Valentino Crawford's ...

What is Solavei-A Solavei Business Review

Solavei is new company that has just launched an inexpensive, no contract mobile phone service. The Solavei business model is based on providing its customers a social networking and ecommerce platform. Through this platform, the customers will be empowered to build their own Solavei business as independent affiliates. The company will not advertise its service but instead will rely on its customers to spread the word through social media. This Solavei review shows that while the company?s initial launch has been extremely successful there are some areas of concern that someone looking to get involved and build a Solavei business should examine.

Solavei?s CEO is Ryan Wuerch, a veteran of the telecommunications industry. Previously he was the CEO of Motricity, a mobile service provider, which grew to a billion dollar company. Wurech was the CEO of Motricity for ten years and managed its amazing growth. In the summer of 2011, Wurech left Motricity due to a law suit alleging insider trading. Wuerch and Motricity lawyers claim that the suit is without merit.

Solavei Review: Products

Solavei?s first product offering is a voice, data and text service. For a $49 setup fee and a $49 per month service charge, Solavei offers customers unlimited voice, text and data through a partnership with T-Mobile. Customers can use their own phones simply by purchasing and installing a new SIM card or they can purchase a phone from the company.

Customers will be compensated for referring others to the service. For every three customers who purchase the service, the referring customer will receive a $20 commission each month. This allows customer to refer only 9 people and their own cell service would be paid for. But there is also the opportunity to reach higher levels of income by referring more customers. The company has provided an array of marketing tools to assist people who want to build a Solavei business. There are social media tools, mobile applications and affiliate websites designed to support the Solavei business builder.

The initial product launch was in late September 2012. Prior to launch, 25,000 customers signed up for the service during the beta test. In the first two weeks after the official launch, 5000 new customers joined and the company made five million dollars. The company seems poised to grow rapidly with its innovative grassroots system of marketing mobile service. However, there are some areas of concern for potential customers and business builders. Some have complained about the quality of T-Mobile?s mobile network. Like any mobile service, the quality of the transmission varies depending on where the towers are placed. Others have suggested that the compensation model is a pyramid scheme. This probably not true. The company is first and foremost offering a useful product and does not seem to be a fraudulent pyramid scheme. Finally, there is the issue of Ryan Wuerch. One has to assume that the law suits he is involved in will not affect the operations of the company in order to become involved as a serious Solavei business builder. So Solavei is a new and innovative way of marketing mobile service, but there are also some concerns that one should seriously consider before becoming involved.

If you love to promote your Solavei Business and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging about your favorite products, discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass Solavei Business booster in the industry!

Solar power used to study elephants in Africa

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? A team of elephant researchers from Stanford University has transformed a remote corner of southern Africa into a high-tech field camp run entirely on sunlight. The seasonal solar-powered research camp gives scientists a rare opportunity to quietly observe, videotape and photograph wild elephants at Mushara waterhole, an isolated oasis in Etosha National Park in Namibia.

"One of the really special aspects of solar energy is that it allows us to be in this incredibly remote area that's closed to tourists and is off the grid," said lead researcher Caitlin O'Connell-Rodwell, an instructor at the Stanford School of Medicine and a collaborating scientist at Stanford's Center for Conservation Biology. She is also co-founder of Utopia Scientific, a non-profit organization that promotes awareness about science, conservation and public health.

"We get to watch elephant society unfold before us in a very quiet environment -- no generators, no people, no vehicles," she added.

O'Connell-Rodwell has been studying elephant communication at Mushara for 20 years. She was the first scientist to demonstrate that low-frequency calls produced by elephants generate powerful vibrations in the ground -- seismic signals that elephants can feel, and even interpret, via their sensitive trunks and feet.

To identify individual elephants, Stanford undergraduate Patrick Freeman took hundreds of high-resolution photographs using a camera run on solar-powered batteries. His trip to Namibia was supported by a travel grant from the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) at Stanford. Each year, VPUE provides additional funding to support Stanford undergraduates working in the camp.

Solar energy was also used to operate a powerful speaker system that delivered low-frequency sounds to elephants gathered at the waterhole. The solar panels provided enough electricity to run a makeshift elephant dung laboratory, operate camera and editing equipment for a documentary video crew, and power two 12-volt refrigerators stocked with fresh meat, dairy products and beer.

Wildlife on parade

Mushara is home to hundreds of wild animals -- including rhinos, giraffes, hyenas and lions -- that parade to and from the watering hole 24/7. To keep inquisitive critters from wandering into camp, which operated from June through August this year, researchers installed a solar-powered electric fence around the perimeter that delivered a harmless shock to any animal that got too close. "It will just scare them away," said researcher Tim Rodwell, a Stanford MD who teaches medicine at the University of California-San Diego. "A lion tried to touch the fence in the far corner. He only tried it once."

Solar energy also enabled the Stanford team to stay connected to the Internet -- allowing O'Connell-Rodwell to send numerous blog posts to the New York Times website directly from Mushara.

The solar panels and the rest of the electrical system were dismantled at the end of the season when the researchers returned home. O'Connell-Rodwell and her team plan to reconstruct the solar-powered camp at Mushara next year and resume their long-term elephant research project.

"Basically, all of our high-tech electronics are run off of a couple of solar panels, a couple of batteries and an inverter," she said. "The sun does the rest."

The Stanford team also received technical support from solar energy companies Soltec and HNU Energy.

Google Spills Earnings Early, Made Way Less Money This Quarter Than Everyone Thought [Google]

It's easy to get caught up in the Wall Street expectations game, under whose rules Google just had a disastrous third quarter. But while earnings were down significantly year over year, and were well below analyst expectations, the company still hauled in over two billion dollars of income on $14.10 billion of revenue. That's got to count for something, right? More »

B2B Display Ads with Demographic Targeting - Business 2 Community

Earlier this week, San Francisco-based Demandbase announced its ?Company Targeted Advertising,? a new platform that allows B2B marketers to target online display advertising either to specific companies (by name) or those that meet specific corporate attributes (company size for example, or vertical industries).

The introduction follows on the heels of a similar announcement at September?s Dreamforce conference by Bizo, when they unveiled Bizo Company Targeting, a solution that also allows B2B advertisers to target display ads at prospects within target accounts, say Fortune 1000 companies, or a list of names from within the advertiser?s CRM database. Madison Logic, a provider of ?data powered lead solutions? based in New York, also announced a similar offering this fall with their Data Match Lead Retargeting service. You can even make comparisons to the display advertising offered by Internet darling LinkedIn, through whom B2B marketers can also target prospects by industry, company size, even job title.

Coming in quick succession, all these announcements represent a potentially dramatic shift in the use of display advertising as a demand generation tool for B2B advertisers. To date, in order to reach specific markets or corporate demographics through online display, B2B marketers have needed to rely primarily on targeting by content ? placing ads either on sites of an editorial focus likely to be read by their target audience, or using contextual models where ads appear adjacent to related content. Neither of these models prevents unqualified prospects, or even consumers, from viewing and clicking on those same ads. (Demandbase estimates that the traditional display model results in 67 percent of all ads being served to unintended targets.)

The ability to target specific industries, job functions, revenue tiers, even specific companies, changes this dynamic fairly dramatically. Where previously, display advertising has tended to be a little-used B2B demand generation tool other than for broad-based general awareness, now it has the potential to match other channels ? notably content syndication (PPL), and paid search (PPC) ? in its ability to drive low-cost qualified leads that meet B2B advertisers? target demographics.

Which leads me to wonder: if indeed this becomes more than a trend, and develops into a standard feature of B2B display advertising, can Google, or even Yahoo/Bing, be far behind in offering their own version of demographic targeting? Imagine, if you will, the option to display search ads (through Google AdWords) only to companies that match up with your target attributes, instantly eliminating the wasted investment in conversions or leads that will never become sales-ready prospects. Technically, it should be possible. Financially, is Google prepared to lose all those clicks (and click revenue) that would disappear as a result?

Carbon Dating Gets an Update

Aren't you curious what God was up to before genesis?

The same thing every man does first thing in the morning -- masturbating.

I mean, if God has existed forever, and the universe is just 6000 years old, then what the hell was he doing all the rest of that time? Off making other universes? Were they successful or not?

No. Once he saw what a mess he'd made of things, he put it all in the closet, got drunk, played X-Box, and forgot about the whole thing.

How much baggage does God have?

Let's just say him and the family attend regular therapy sessions...

Are the angels the result of those previous geneses? If not, when were the angels created? And the cherubs, oh why won't anyone think of the cherubs?!

No, the angels were "Version 1.0". After he realized he'd left off a few important bits, like genitals, he created man. It was a big improvement, but still far too buggy, so then he put out service pack 1, codename: Woman. Woman fixed
