SEATTLE (AP) - Brad Evans scored twice, including the go-ahead goal, to lead the Seattle Sounders to a 3-1 victory over FC Dallas on Sunday night.

The Sounders (15-7-11, 56 points), who already have clinched their fourth straight MLS playoff berth, climbed into a second-place tie with Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference. Both teams have one game remaining.

The loss eliminated FC Dallas (9-13-11, 38 points) from playoff contention, securing the fifth and final spot in the West for Vancouver.

The Sounders did not have head coach Sigi Schmid on the sidelines. He was serving a one-game suspension after making comments critical of the officiating following Wednesday's 0-0 tie with Salt Lake in Seattle. Lead assistant coach Brian Schmetzer ran the team in Schmid's absence.

Unique feature of HIV helps create antibodies, researchers discover

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A new AIDS study, published Oct. 22 in the journal, Nature Medicine, describes how a unique change in the outer covering of the virus found in two HIV infected South African women enabled them to make potent antibodies which are able to kill up to 88% of HIV types from around the world. The ground-breaking discovery suggests an important new approach that could be useful in making an AIDS vaccine.

The study, performed by members of the Centre for the Aids Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) consortium, involves scientists from Wits University, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in Johannesburg, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of Cape Town, who has been studying, over the last five years, how certain HIV-infected people develop very powerful antibody responses.

These antibodies are referred to as broadly neutralising antibodies because they kill a wide range of HIV types from different parts of the world. This CAPRISA team initially discovered that two KwaZulu-Natal women, one of whom participated in the CAPRISA 004 tenofovir gel study, could make these rare antibodies.

Through long-term follow-up laboratory studies on these two women, the team led by Wits researchers and Centre for HIV and STI at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases of the National Health Laboratory Service based scientists Dr Penny Moore and Professor Lynn Morris, discovered that a sugar (known as a glycan) on the surface protein coat of the virus at a specific position (referred to as position 332) forms a site of vulnerability in the virus and enables the body to mount a broadly neutralizing antibody response.

"Understanding this elaborate game of 'cat and mouse' between HIV and the immune response of the infected person has provided valuable insights into how broadly neutralizing antibodies arise," says Moore.

Morris, Head of AIDS Research at the NICD explained: "We were surprised to find that the virus that caused infection in many cases did not have this antibody target on its outer covering. But over time, the virus was pressured by body's immune reaction to cover itself with the sugar that formed a point of vulnerability, and so allowed the development of antibodies that hit that weak spot."

"Broadly neutralising antibodies are considered to be the key to making an AIDS vaccine. This discovery provides new clues on how vaccines could be designed to elicit broadly neutralising antibodies. The world needs an effective AIDS vaccine to overcome the global scourge of AIDS," said Professor Salim Abdool Karim, Director of CAPRISA and President of the Medical Research Council, in his comments on the significance of the finding.

While their existence has been known for a while, highly potent forms of broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV were only identified about 3 years ago. Until now, it was not known how the human body is able to make broadly neutralizing antibodies.

This study discovered one mechanism by which these antibodies may be made. To make this discovery, the research team studied the target of some of these antibodies, a sugar that coats the surface protein of HIV, forming a site of vulnerability. By tracing back the evolution of the virus that elicited these antibodies, this team showed that this particular weak point was absent from the virus that first infected these women.

However, under constant pressure from other less powerful antibodies that develop in all infected people, their HIV was forced to expose this vulnerability over time. This allowed the broadly neutralizing antibodies to develop.

Analysis of a large number of other viruses from throughout the world, performed in collaboration with scientists from the University of North Carolina and Harvard University, suggest that the vulnerability at position 332 may be present at the time of infection in about two thirds of subtype C viruses (the subtype most common in Africa). Hence, if a vaccine is developed to target this glycan only, it may not be able to uniformly neutralize all subtype C viruses; as a result AIDS vaccines may need to attack multiple targets on the virus.

WA land sales fall | | MacroBusiness

By Leith van Onselen

I noted last week how the RBA and Treasury?s hope that the void left by the unwinding of the mining boom will be filled by a pick-up in housing construction looks overly ambitious.

Even in Australia?s boom state ? Western Australia (WA) ? the housing construction outlook is weak, with data released by Landgate showing that land sales have tanked to their lowest level in the series? 11-year history, despite land prices coming off by -$30,000 from their November 2007 highs (see below chart).

The news for the established home market is better, with house sales rallying 30% from their January 2011 lows, but still highly subdued relative to pre-2006 levels.

Housing Industry Association (HIA) new home sales data is a little more optimistic for the construction industry, with new house sales rising this year, albeit from decade low levels. However, dwelling approvals data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that house approvals continue to trend lower, suggesting that WA developers have been clearing excess inventories (see below chart).

With WA?s population currently growing by 3% per year, the construction industry will need to turn things around fast. WA rents are surging ? up 15.4% in the year to September, according to Australian Property Monitors ? suggesting that housing supply is extremely tight.

New house and land sales, along with dwelling approvals, will need to rise sharply from their current depressed levels in order to both alleviate the rental squeeze, as well as support the WA economy as the iron ore price boom, and related mining projects, come off the boil.

Pussy Riot members transferred to prison colonies

(AP) ? A lawyer for the two jailed Pussy Riot band members says they have been transferred to prison colonies hundreds of miles from Moscow to serve their sentence.

Mark Feygin said Monday that Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova were transferred during the weekend from Moscow prison, where they were kept since March. Feygin said prison authorities informed him that Alekhina had been sent to the Perm region in the Urals and Tolokonnikova to the central province of Mordovia. He could not confirm the information with his clients.

Alekhina, Tolokonnikova, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred in August for performing a protest prayer against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral in February, and given two-year sentences. Samutsevich was released on appeal earlier this month.

Pierce County officials want residents to prepare now for flood season

With the fall and winter flood season nearing, Pierce County residents should prepare now to keep their family and property safe.

?Everyone should have a family plan in place and an emergency kit on hand in case of extreme weather conditions,? said Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. ?Other steps to help you get ready for flood season include purchasing flood insurance, keeping storm drains near your home and business clear of debris, and storing valuables and household chemicals above flood levels.?

To create a family plan, residents should identify a safe route from their home, school and work to high ground, set a meeting place for family members in case of separation, and designate an out-of-state contact to call if local lines are busy or down. An emergency kit should include at least a seven-day supply of food and water, first aid supplies, extra clothing and blankets, prescription medicine, and hygiene and sanitation supplies. Additional information can be found at www.piercecountywa.org/prepare.

Nearly 17,000 residents who live or own property near flood hazard areas within unincorporated Pierce County will soon receive the county?s annual Flood Bulletin in the mail. The bulletin provides information on flood protection and preparedness, such as the county?s Flood Warning System and emergency contact information, actions that property owners can take to avoid flood disaster ? before, during, and after a flood, flood insurance facts and how to purchase flood insurance; and an overview of a new documentary about the Pierce County flood buyout program.

The bulletin is also available on Pierce County?s flood website at www.piercecountywa.org/flood, by calling (253) 798-2725, or emailing pcwater@co.pierce.wa.us. The flood website includes a brief survey residents can take for a chance to win a weather radio. The raffle will be held on Dec. 10.

iMore Editors' Choice for October 21, 2012

Every week, the editors at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include a zombie game, some awesome music, a simple, distraction free writing app, and an app for creating graphs and charts.

Zombie Toss - Simon Sage

I guess I just didn't get enough undead from The Walking Dead. Zombie Toss is a Fruit Ninja-style slicing game with a perverse twist. A demented chef is collecting zombie meat for his own culinary experimentations, and you're the one harvesting. Throughout gameplay, you earn keys to unlock new levels, cash to upgrade your butchering implements, and gold teeth to purchase premium new items. You have to be careful to not let too many airborne zombies hit the ground, or they'll gnaw through your armor and infect you.

While the gameplay itself lacks some of the smoothness of Fruit Ninja, the art style and premise are both enough to keep me interested, especially with Hallowe'en right around the corner.

Epilogue - Rene Ritchie

Man goes to conference halfway across the world. Man meets girl. Man falls in love. Man has to leave. Man has a very bad day. It's the kind of story and the kind of pain only music can truly express, and it's exactly what's expressed in Epilogue, the debut single/demo from Airplane Mode. Full disclosure, Airplane Mode is Dave Wiskus. I know Dave Wiskus. He's been on Iterate a few times and I've been on Unprofessional. Dave's a crackerjack -- now freelance -- designer. I like Dave.

I had no idea he could flipping perform, much less like this. I hope he won't mind me saying I'm proud of him, and more than a little inspired by his putting his music out there. And I hope he keeps doing it. We could all stand to put ourselves out there a little more, and risk doing things just a little farther beyond ourselves.

Epilogue is free. Read the story first.

Byword - Joseph Keller

Byword provides a simple, clean interface in which to write, and is my go-to writing app. Both the Mac and iOS versions of the app support syncing through both iCloud and Dropbox, and take advantage of iCloud folders. Both versions of Byword include support for both plain text and rich text, as well as fantastic Markdown support, including intelligent syntax highlighting and a Markdown preview. The iOS version keeps a toolbar above the keyboard that can display the word count of the current document, various punctuation shortcuts, or navigation and Markdown tools, such as inserting a link or image. There are limited options in Byword, with support for four fonts on the iOS version, but these limitations allow for distraction-free writing environment and get rid of anything that does not aid in just committing ideas to a document. The iOS version of the app is universal, has been updated for iOS 6 and the iPhone 5, and is currently on sale.

OmniGraphSketcher - Leanna Lofte

One of my duties as a math instructor is to write exams. For many classes, that involves charts and graphs that I insist must look great. The best solution I've found for non-equation graphs is OmniGraphSketcher by The Omni Group. OmniGraphSketcher makes creating graphs and charts super easy to create whether you have specific data or just trying to explain a concept. You can create lines and data points, draw curves, and shade in important areas as easily as though you were using a basic drawing program. When you're done, you can share it as a PDF or PNG to then use as you please.

I have found use for OmniGraphSketcher as a math instructor, but other people will also find it useful, particularly business people who need to present information in a graphical, easy to interpret way.

Guest pick: True Patriot - Guy English

Many years ago I used to work at Infinity Comics and Second Edition with a guy called J Torres. Awesome guy. Got me into all sorts of good comic stuff. I recently found him again on Twitter and he's gotten together a bunch of comic book writers and artists and an Indiegogo project called True Patriots. It's a comic purely about Canadian superheroes because, of course, patriotism is about being Canadian. He's an awesome guy. It's going to be an awesome book. If you like what I have to say, you're going to love this. It's the trifecta.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Families, schools, and communities can prepare children and teens to THRIVE through both good and challenging times. Building Resilience in Children and Teens offers strategies to help kids from 18 months to 18 years build seven crucial ?Cs? ? competence, confidence, connection, character, contribution, coping, and control ? so they can excel in life and bounce back from challenges. The book describes how to raise authentically successful children who will be happy, hardworking, compassionate, creative, and innovative. Dr. Ginsburg reminds parents that our goal is to think in the present and prepare for the future, to remember that our real goal is to raise children to be successful 35-year-olds. It?s about more than immediate smiles or even good grades; it?s about raising kids to be emotionally and socially intelligent, to be able to recover from disappointment and forge ahead throughout their lives. The stable connection between caring adults and children is the key to the security that allows kids to creatively master challenges and reach their highest potential. This book offers concrete strategies to solidify those vital family connections.

Resilience is also about confronting the overwhelming stress kids face today. This invaluable guide offers coping strategies for facing the stresses of academic performance, high achievement standards, media messages, peer pressure, and family tension. Young people too commonly survive stress by indulging in unhealthy behaviors or by giving up completely The suggested solutions offered here are aimed at building a repertoire of positive coping strategies. Kids who have these healthy strategies in place may be less likely to turn to those quick, easy, but dangerous fixes that adults fear. The book includes a guide for teens to create their own customized positive coping strategies.

The second edition of this award-winning book continues to focus on parents, but now also offers wisdom about how schools and communities can best support families. It is updated throughout and entirely new chapters offer strategies on how best to: support military families, confront the negative portrayal of teens, prevent perfectionism and support authentic success. Finally, the book now guides parents how to recharge and rebound when their own resilience reaches its limits.
