Mem's Political Scrapbook: Mitt Romney and Huge Number Of ...

After Peterson missed an appointment with his attorneys after being released on bail, Wasatch County, Utah sheriff?s officials were dispatched and found Peterson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

One Peterson Facebook invitation allegedly read: ?Tell guard at gate that u r guests of Greg Peterson?s Moose Lodge on Witts Lake. Doesn?t that make you feel special? It should.?

Four separate times, prosecutors say, Gregory Peterson lured women under the pretext of a movie or lunch ? and sexually assaulted them. He kept one captive in his mother?s house for several days, they said. He threatened to report another, whose visa had expired, for deportation, charging documents alleged.?And in each case, authorities said, he forced the women to engage in sex acts by pointing to guns he possessed. [...]

The first woman, identified only as S.M., described meeting Peterson at a church event in March 2011 and agreeing to go to a movie with him. Instead of going to the theater, she said, he drove her to his cabin, assaulting her both on the drive and during the night. The woman said she was scared because there were weapons both in the car and in his cabin. Peterson drove her back to her car the next morning, she said.

The other women said they met Peterson online. One said Peterson asked her to dinner in July 2011 but instead drove her to his cabin, sexually assaulting her on the way and through the night. She said he talked about her expired visa and threatened to deport her. Peterson then drove her to his mother?s house and kept her there for three days before driving her home and assaulting her again, she said. [...]

A bail bondsman found Peterson in his Wasatch County cabin Tuesday evening while checking on him because his ankle monitor signal was getting weak, Sheriff Todd Bonner said.

Peterson claimed to have an MBA in Finance from Brigham Young University, and also claimed that he was a certified financial planner who owned an Orem-based wealth management company and an online trading website.

Was this taken during the Summer Games, perchance? Hmm. I also like how his Facebook avatar has Romney included in it.

Republicans are busily trying to play down Peterson?s connections with many prominent GOP politicians, one in particular: Mitt Romney.

Peterson has billed himself online as a ?close personal friend of the Romney family,? and posted video on Youtube of Romney speaking at a 2007 fundraiser at Romney?s home in Deer Valley. He contributed $2,300 to the Romney campaign that year. In addition, he posted several photos of himself and Romney on his Facebook page.

But Chaffetz, who said he has been at most of the Romney events in Utah over the last few years, said he never saw Peterson at any of them. ?I seriously doubt? he is close with the Romneys, Chaffetz said. Peterson did attend a national call day in Las Vegas, where supporters were invited to come and make phone calls for the Romney campaign, Chaffetz said.

Oh, would that be Republican Representative Jason Chaffetz? The one shown here at Peterson?s cabin taking a picture with Peterson?

Picture from "Thump And Whip" website

Picture from ?Thump And Whip? website

Chaffetz (R-UT) may ?doubt? that Peterson was ?close? to the Romneys (R-Oligarchistan), but Mitt Romney and Peterson have socialized at several VIP GOP events and fundraisers?including theRocky Mountain Conservatives Convention and Barbecue?held at his cabin?and Peterson had co-chaired a fundraiser specifically in honor of Romney as well.

CONFIRMED KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: SENATORS MICHAEL S. LEE AND ORRIN HATCH, GOV. GARY HERBERT. Congressman Chaffetz, Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne, Mayor Mia Love, Mayor David Phillips, Kirkham Motorsports CEO David Kirkham, tons of Mayors, State legislators, and many others prominent Conservatives.

Last year we mingled with Senator Mike Lee & Tim Bridgewater after a closely contested primary. We were also joined by Carl Wimmer of The Patrick Henry Caucus, Rep. Craig Frank, Rep. Curtis Oda, Rep. John Dougall, Megablogger now Rep. Holly Richardson, Cherilyn Eagar, Morgan Philpot, who nearly knocked off our nemesis Jim Matheson, the one and only Victor Shanti, and basically every other Conservative activist in Utah.

Attendee Julie Harmon posted 145 photos on?SmugMug, if you want to see how prominent Republicans partied down at the Rape Cabin with Peterson. DailyKOS?also quotes this Tea Party website blurb about Peterson:

Greg Peterson, a close personal friend of the Romney family, discusses why liberty loving Latter-day Saints should support Mitt Romney for president. Greg expounds upon the fundamental principles Mitt will adhere to when making presidential decisions. Jeremy and JC question Greg on Mitt?s stance on key issues including government health care, income taxes, abortion, immigration, undeclared wars, the American empire, social security and the Federal Reserve.

Ain?t no party like a GOP party, ?cause a GOP party?s got freaks! (?Say what?)

The rush by Republican politicians to disavow any and all connection to or friendship with Peterson has been swift. Loop21?s Nadra Kareem Nittle?reports:

Utah lawmakers are distancing themselves from the fundraiser. A spokesman for Sen. Mike Lee, Brian Phillips, is downplaying the idea that the legislator is a friend of Peterson after photos and videos of the men at Peterson?s cabin turned up online on Thursday. Phillips said ?the relationship between the two men is professional. Moreover, he says that the senator and his staff are concerned for the victims of Peterson?s alleged attacks.

Prominent Utah politicians Peterson hosted include U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, Gov. Gary Herbert, U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz and others. [...]?While Peterson has been involved in state politics and events, Utah Republican Chairman Thomas Wright has said he never held a leadership role or raised or donated money for the state party. Some considered Peterson a self-styled Tea Party operative.

On his Facebook page, Peterson claim[ed] to be good friends with the Romney family and that he attended Brigham Young University with Josh Romney, the presidential candidate?s youngest son. He posted photos of himself with Mitt Romney and Josh Romney on Facebook. [...]

In local Republican circles, Peterson apparently played the role of a wealthy conservative politico who claimed to have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for GOP candidates. [...]

Utah Tea Party leader and former gubernatorial candidate David Kirkham described Peterson as ?exuberant? in his political opinions. Peterson wrote a blog called the Conservative Moose and was prolific on Facebook.??He was kind of a familiar face to many people,? Kirkham said. [...]

Peterson billed this past May?s conference as ?the CPAC of the West,? a reference to the national Conservative Political Action Committee that draws thousands of activists to Washington, D.C., each year. The agenda included GOP attorney general candidates John Swallow and Sean Reyes in a Lincoln/Douglas-style debate at Wasatch High School. A barbecue featuring wild elk and a golf- into-the-lake contest followed at the cabin.

Utah?s Democratic Party Chairman Jim Dabakis said that he hoped that Republicans would denounce the sexual assaults and ban Peterson from future events. Since Peterson has made the choice for them, the GOP will now not have to choose between the riskiness of being seen associating with Peterson (and his legal problems) again and turning down someone offering to raise a truckload of money for them. I?m sure it would have been a hard choice.

I assume that none of Peterson?s victims got pregnant from the assaults, because otherwise Peterson?s GOP buddies would be all up in the women?s?personal business telling them that they should see Peterson?s attacks and the resulting pregnancies as ?gifts from God,? and then they?d try to prevent them from getting abortions if they wanted them.

Also, as Thump And Whip writer?toma?says: ?If a vicious violent lunatic rapist had been photographed with Obama, Pelosi and Franks, the conservative blogosphere would wallpaper the internet. But this is just another Republican. I think we?ve all grown used to the freaks being freaks.?

Now, enjoy a lovely photo album, full of Peterson and his Republican buddies:

Some interesting info about Peterson?s Republican buddies and their views on rape and abortion:

Gov. Gary Herbert:?Don?t criminalize woman seeking illegal forms of abortion.

Last May, a 17-year-old girl, seven months pregnant, paid a man $150 to beat her up in hopes of inducing a miscarriage. The fetus survived the assault and was born in August. The attacker went to jail. And the girl became the center of a bill that would formally criminalize what she did, that is, to seek an illegal abortion.

Gov. Herbert has said he agrees generally with the bills goals but is still studying the particulars: Utah would still allow legal abortions performed by a doctor. But it would go further than any other state in mapping out when a woman is criminally liable for trying to end a pregnancy through other means or self-infliction.

Critics say legislation inspired by an unusual, perhaps even freakish criminal case, could open up a vast frontier around the question of intent and responsibility and give local prosecutors huge new powers to inquire about a woman?s intentions toward her unborn child. [Gov. Herbert vetoed the bill on March 8, 2010].

Sen. Orrin Hatch:
  • Benefit of saving lives outweighs destroying stem cells. (Nov 2010)

Mitt Romney's big economics speech: Can he deliver 'big change?'

In Iowa, Mitt Romney tells voters President Obama made the economy he inherited worse and pledges policy changes to bring the US economy 'roaring back.'

That assertion, made in an economics speech to voters in Iowa, came amid news that the US economy still is growing at a slow pace: an annual rate of 2 percent, according to the Commerce Department's preliminary gauge of activity in the year's third quarter.

Against that backdrop, Mr. Romney framed his remarks with a rebuke of the Obama presidency.

"President Obama frequently reminds us that he inherited a troubled economy," Romney said. But he also "inherited the most productive and innovative nation in history. He inherited the largest economy in the world.... What he inherited wasn't the only problem; what he did with what he inherited made the problem worse."

Romney said Friday his own plan would bring not only jobs but also control the rising national debt ? by setting a new tone of bipartisanship, restraining federal spending, and reforming entitlements.

But as voters know, that's a tall order. Is his promise of sweeping fiscal reform credible?

The answer may be a "good news, bad news" story. On the positive side, it appears likely that whoever wins will face public and financial-market pressure to address the nation's fiscal problems. And many economists embrace a basic tenet of Romney's plan: to focus on generating economic growth, not solely on closing budget deficits in Washington.

On the negative side, however, are some serious doubts. Independent finance experts have asserted that Romney's fiscal plans are math-challenged. And even if his desire to work "across the aisle" is sincere, some analysts question whether he could deliver bipartisan cooperation, given the rigid party lines visible in Congress on issues like taxes.

"I know it because I have seen it," Romney said, referring to bipartisanship during his years as a state governor working with a Democratic legislature. "Good Democrats can come together with good Republicans to solve big problems. What we need is leadership."

In Washington today, that leadership will have to come from more than just the president. For embers of bipartisanship to rekindle, it will also require some effort by members of both parties in Congress.

It appears likely that Republicans will continue to control the House ? with most of them having signed a pledge not to raise new tax revenue. The Senate will probably continue to be beyond the filibuster-proof control of either party ? perhaps with Democrats retaining the majority. Democrats widely want a fiscal solution that includes some new tax revenue alongside spending cuts, and more US voters align with that view than with the no-new-revenue view.

That gets back to an aspect of the political climate that's more supportive of fiscal change: There's growing pressure to accomplish it.

One sign came this week as more than 80 CEOs of large corporations joined a nonpartisan campaign called "Fix the Debt," designed as an alarm bell for both political parties to control government borrowing. Some 300,000 Americans have signed the group's petition.

Meanwhile, two deadlines loom that will force Congress to consider tax and spending policies: the need to raise the official "debt limit" (an artificial barrier to borrowing set by lawmakers), and the "fiscal cliff." The cliff comes at year-end, when Bush-era tax cuts are set to expire even as across-the-board spending cuts are scheduled to take effect.

The fiscal cliff represents the threat of too-sudden fiscal discipline, which could hit the economy with a steep drop in consumption as consumers get hit with higher taxes, and as federal spending cuts contribute to a slowdown in business activity. If Romney wants the economy to be "roaring back" in 2013, economists say that avoiding the full impact of the cliff is important.

Tips On How To Create A 'green' Home | The Board Magazine

In many cases, home improvements are major projects that call for a lot of preparation. Make sure you don?t neglect the right mental and educational preparation; you need to learn all you can ahead of time. The following article contains information you can use when thinking of making improvements to your home.

Substituting vinyl tiles for stone or ceramic ones is a way to save a lot of money when you?re installing a new floor surface. Vinyl will last due to its durability and water resistance, and installation is easy with the adhesive backing. You can buy this flooring as a set or in one piece to cover a large area.

If there are elderly people in your home, make sure you plan your home improvements with safety and mobility in mind. A step-in shower stall, for example, is much easier to access and reduces the risk of slipping. Grab bars and hand rails can add ease and comfort for anyone that needs it.

Making your ceiling appear higher than it is can be accomplished using two very simple tips. You could paint vertical stripes on a wall or just put a big floor lamp in the room. This can be a good way to enhance the look of your room. Your ceilings will look higher and your rooms will look bigger.

Be sure to give your bathroom good lighting when you remodel. Sometimes people concentrate on bathroom fixtures during a remodel, and they tend to overlook the importance of proper lighting. Design so you can have lights that surround you mirrors and your medicine cabinet, and consider adding ceiling lights that take bulbs that are easily replaceable.

Save money on repair bills by purchasing a drain snake. This way, it won?t be necessary to spend money on drain cleaners as often as you did before. Because drain snakes can be complicated to use, it is a good idea to ask an experienced plumber to demonstrate the correct procedure. Remember to purchase a snake that fits your drain so that your pipe doesn?t get damaged.

Ceramic tile can be used in kitchens and bathrooms. There is a lot of opportunity to get creative, or you have the option of keeping it simple. Installing such tile can be a beautiful way to add value and appeal in your home.

If you are considering major remodeling, engage a professional to design the work or draw up the plans. The ideal project or renovation takes into account multiple non-decorative factors, including safety, efficiency and function. An experienced designer or architect can create a remodeling plan that incorporates all the appropriate building codes for your area as well.

Updating your kitchen appliances can be done on a reasonable budget. Although stainless steel is popular these days, it?s pointless to get rid of a working refrigerator just because you don?t like the color. It is possible to purchase appliance spray paint for a very reasonable price, and paint the appliances whatever color you so desire. This can easily change the feel of your kitchen in no more than a day.

Give your house a much needed bath, so to speak, by pressure washing it. Pressure washers are cheap to rent and do a fantastic job of getting dirt and grime off the outside surface of your house. Be careful around the roof line and windows. You do not want to create another project!

Anyone interested in making a big impact on their home?s exterior should consider a new paint job. A new paint coat makes everything look fresh. You are going to feel as if you are in a different home if you choose vibrant, different colors.

Sealant strips and draft excluders can really help prevent the escape of air through your doors. Draft excluders are made to fit on the bottom side of a door to prevent warm air from escaping and stop cold air from entering. There is sealant stripping that can fit around a door frame, which will accomplish the same thing. You can usually get them at hardware stores.

Using CFL bulbs saves you money and is environmentally friendly, but if one breaks, you should know how to properly clean it up. Make sure that you evacuate the room of both people and pets, since broken bulbs might release mercury. Complete the clean-up job by using tape to collect the broken glass. Put the broken bag in a bag and double it, vacuum and then take out your trash right away.

Putting in another bathroom will add a great deal of value to your home. It is helpful to have a second bathroom, particularly if they are located on different floors of the home. Inevitably, two people will need to use the restroom at the same time, after all.

If you plan to purchase a home, be sure to get a professional inspection. This can help you get a much more accurate sense of what type of fixing up may be needed. A third party professional who offers a completely objective view will ensure that everything that needs to be fixed is found.

It can be lots of fun and yield a great sense of reward to complete your own home improvement projects. But the first step should be proper planning and evaluation of what you want to accomplish and what you need to accomplish it. That cuts down on errors that can happen otherwise.

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) -Michael Stephens scored in the 80th minute to help the Los Angeles Galaxy beat El Salvador's Isidro Metapan 3-2 on Thursday in the final group of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Obama votes, picks up Powell endorsement amid swing state push

CHICAGO (Reuters) - President Barack Obama won the endorsement of retired General Colin Powell, a moderate Republican, on Thursday as he and Republican rival Mitt Romney engaged in frantic campaigning in battleground states to try to turn a razor-close race their way.

Hoping to encourage supporters to vote ahead of the November 6 election, Obama cast his ballot early in his home town of Chicago.

Romney portrayed himself as an agent of change during a day campaigning in Ohio with 12 days to go until the election.

There was little movement in the overall state of the race - which is essentially tied. Romney was clinging to a one percentage point lead over Obama in Thursday's Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll, up 47 percent to 46 percent for Obama.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll showed how Romney has made up ground since defeating Obama in the first of their three presidential debates on October 3. The poll had Romney up by 50 percent to 47 percent among likely voters.

Romney charged that electing Obama would return Washington to a "status-quo path," a path that "doesn't have an answer about how to get the economy going."

"The path we're on does not have new answers," said Romney, whose campaign has been centered around ways to create jobs in the sputtering economy.

Powell's endorsement was a milestone for the president in his re-election bid but since he had backed Obama four years ago, it did not have the same impact this time around.

Powell was a secretary of state during the presidency of Obama's Republican predecessor, George W. Bush. He told CBS he is sticking with Obama because the economy is improving.

"The unemployment rate is too high. People are still hurting in housing. But I see that we are starting to rise up," he said.

'I NEED OHIO'

Showing off his own momentum, Romney appeared at a rally in Defiance, Ohio Thursday night where a campaign-estimated 12,000 people turned out to hear Romney after a concert by Big and Rich, Meat Loaf and Randy Owen of country music group Alabama.

"We need to take America back, and I need Ohio," Romney said. "And Ohio's going to set the course for the nation."

Obama has generated large crowds during a two-day, eight-state tour that is taking him to Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, Florida, Ohio, California, Illinois and Virginia.

Some 8,500 people showed up for an early morning rally in Tampa, Florida on Thursday and some 15,000 came out for the president in Richmond, Virginia.

The president has sought to rev up enthusiasm and momentum in those crowds by talking about his cross-country trip.

"We are right in the middle of our 48-hour fly-around campaign extravaganza," he said to applause in Florida. "We pulled an all-nighter last night!"

The election will likely be decided in a handful of swing states where the candidates are spending just about all of their time, with none of them more important than Ohio.

The two campaigns squabbled over who has the upper hand in Ohio, where the race is close. Democrats believe they have the edge with an early voting and turn-out operation, but Republicans disagree.

"A steady upward trajectory among key voting blocs indicates a close race, but one that is unmistakably moving in Mitt Romney's direction," said Romney national political director Rich Beeson in an e-mailed memo.

The Romney campaign made clear it would have enough money to fund television advertising in the swing states by announcing his campaign had brought in more than $111 million from October 1 to October 17. The Romney campaign and its Republican allies reported having $169 million cash on hand for the final push.

What Do Kids Do At Home Based Preschool? - Toddlers - Families ...

by Sara Berthiaume | More from this Blogger

One thing that is often on the mind of parents of toddlers is preschool. After all, once a toddler is no longer a toddler, he becomes part of the "preschoolers" age group whether or not he actually attends preschool. I am not sure why that is, and this morning when I was talking with my husband about it he agreed that it seems a bit odd to define an entire age group by something that not every child does.

Perhaps the reason that it seems odd to us is that our soon - to - be preschooler is unlikely to be attending preschool. While there are a couple of nice preschool options in our geographic area, we have decided that it is not necessary that Dylan attend preschool. Since I am at home full time right now anyways and we are interested in exploring how homeschooling works, it makes sense for us to do preschool at home.

We have discussed preschool with Dylan, and we have approached the topic from many different angles, always being careful not to suggest that either attending preschool or not attending preschool is a "better" preference for him to express. He consistently articulates a preference for not attending preschool, stating enthusiastically that he wants Mommy to teach him at "we own home". Since Dylan's third birthday is just around the corner, I decided to look at the basic elements of home preschooling so that I can keep them in mind as I begin to plan how we will do it.

Children in preschool spend their days doing things like reading, singing, doing arts and crafts, and playing with other children their age. They also go on group outings in their communities. We like these things, and some of them have already become a fairly regular part of our daily and weekly activities.

For example, on Wednesdays our local library has story time for children ages two to five. We have attended a few times and could make it a regular part of our schedule. Currently, we don't spend much time singing or doing arts and crafts, but that can easily be changed. Dylan has a couple of friends, and we can schedule play dates more regularly. I also plan to look around town and see whether there are other mothers who are planning to do preschool at home so that we might get to know each other and set up a weekly gathering for the kids. Outings happen regularly, and we very much enjoy going places together. Whether we are headed out to the grocery store or to bring the trash to the landfill, Dylan loves going places with me. Even better, he pays close attention to what he sees and he asks plenty of questions.

It seems as though the ingredients for a successful home preschool experience are well within our reach. Now, I just have to dust off my vocal chords and stock up on craft ideas and supplies.
