6 Ways to Strengthen the Bond Between Your Two Kids

Siblings are bound to each other by blood for life but their relationship may need a lot of nurturing and attention. As a parent, you may be worried about how your kids? relationship with each other may turn out to be when they get older. Put these worries at rest and take the following steps to strengthen the bond between your kids.

1. Plan family outings frequently

You can strengthen the bond between your two kids by spending more time as a family. Kids will learn the importance of being with each other only when they see the family bonding together. Whether it is a one-day picnic, an evening of playing board games or going bowling together, make sure you schedule outings and activities through which your kids get a chance to come closer to each other.

2. Schedule nights when your kids can do a mock sleepover

If your kids are really young, it may be the right time to etch the importance of sibling relationship on their impressionable minds. If they sleep in separate rooms, having a mock sleepover for them may be the perfect way to bond. Allow them to pitch a tent in the backyard, play board games all night long or play video games for a while. Recreate the kind of fun that they would have with their friends on a sleepover.

3. Get your kids to learn a new skill together

Kids love learning new things and if you are sending them to pick up new skills and hobbies after school, make sure they do it together. Having common interests will help them bond for life and they will never run out of things they can do together. Depending on their interests and aptitude, you can enroll them in classes that are about sports, art, baking or other hobby areas.

Elder Law, Drug and Device Laws and Insurance Laws: Contents of ...

Individual Responsibility: Subtitle F, Part I, is ironically entitled ?Individual Responsibility?. I say ?ironically titled? because Mitt Romney, who believes 47% of the US population takes no individual responsibility, wants to repeal this provision. This is the provision that was upheld by the United States Supreme Court. Under this provision, individuals are fined $750 on their personal tax return if they do not purchase minimal essential health care coverage during a calendar year. This is phased in at a rate of $95 for 2014 and $315 for 2015. If an individual goes one month without minimal coverage the fee is 1/12 of this amount. ?Minimal Essential Coverage? includes Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, Tricare, Veteran?s plans, and plans for Peace Corp volunteers. It also includes employer-sponsored plans, individual plans and grandfathered plans. Although the penalty is collected on your income tax form, the law expressly prohibits the Federal government from filing criminal charges against you if you don?t pay the penalty and also prohibits the IRS from filing liens and levies against your property to collect the fee. The US Supreme Court debated as to whether it was constitutional for the government to require you to purchase health insurance, and this provision was upheld under Congress?s taxing power. Beginning in 2014, your insurer will send you a formal notice of your coverage for tax purposes. Employers shall also be required to file a return regarding coverage of their employees and also to provide notice to their employees. Assisted Suicide: The law continues on with a prohibition of discrimination against individuals or health care entities on the basis that they refuse to execute assisted suicide, mercy killings or euthanasia. Expansion of Medicaid. The law initially required the states to expand Medicaid by offering it to anyone with an income of %133 of the federal poverty line but the United States Supreme Court struck down this requirement. It is now optional for the states. Children?s Health Insurance Plan (CHIPs): The law enhances funding for this federal program to assist the states in providing health insurance for Children.

CSN: Will frigid Detroit cool off SF in Game 3?

October 27, 2012, 1:49 pm

PRATTa.png

Programming note: Tune in to SportsNet Central's OctoberQuest at 4 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. We'll take you all the way up to first pitch at 5:07 p.m. with all the pregame news, stats, updates and analysis. It's Game 3 of the World Series!

DETROIT -- The Tigers can act calm and say they are happy to be home all they want. The simple fact of the matter is 53 times a team has taken a 2-0 lead in the World Series, 41 of those teams have gone on to win it all. That's a 78.8 percent chance of failure for the Tigers. ?

The last eight teams to take a 2-0 lead have won the Fall Classic. The odds simply aren't in Detroit's favor. The Giants have won five consecutive postseason games for the first time in franchise history. The Tigers have lost their last six World Series games dating back to 2006.

[GAME THREE LINEUPS: As expected, Sanchez to DH]

It's all stacked up against them.

"I try to keep it simple," Tigers' manager Jim Leyland said. "We are two down with five to play, and we are playing the team we've got to catch."

So what do the Tigers have in their favor, if anything? While the Giants are hotter than a piston powering a Detroit-made Ford Mustang, the game time temperate is expected to be frigid enough to seize their motors -- 46 degrees. A temperature that Prince Fielder described as "perfect."

Game Three starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez is 3-1 in five starts with a 1.98 ERA in his career against the Giants. The weather could be a wild card for him too. Sanchez went 5-7 with a 4.52 ERA in 15 home starts after being traded to the Tigers from the Marlins.

"I'm a little concerned because of the layoff, the cold weather," Leyland said of his Game Three starter. "You don't know how either pitcher is going to react to that."

Home field advantage will be the Tigers' last hope. They are 4-0 at Comerica Park in the playoffs, but even if they win all three games here in Detroit, they will have to head to San Francisco to face a Giants team that has won their last six home World Series games dating back to 2010.

A by-product of the trip back to the Motor City is the use of the DH. Delmon Young's defense didn't kill them in left field, although, he made one embarrassing throw in Game One that more closely resembled a frayed piece of twine than a froze rope. He gets to go back to the role that suits him best, and the Tigers' pitchers are no longer an empty spot in the lineup. Having the DH improves the Tigers both offensively and defensively.

Quintin Berry, LF
Miguel Cabrera, 3B
Prince Fielder, 1B

Broadway takes few chances with superstorm coming

(AP) ? Broadway took the threat of the mammoth storm seriously, with theater owners canceling all Sunday evening and Monday performances of shows like "The Book of Mormon" ''Once" and "Mama Mia!" long before a drop of rain fell in Times Square.

"The safety and security of theatregoers and employees is everyone's primary concern," said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League, which represents producers.

Forecasts called for rain late Sunday or early Monday, and subway and public transportation service is to be halted Sunday evening, potentially stranding theatergoers. Refunds will be made available from the point of purchase.

Off-Broadway shows including "Stomp," ''Bad Jews" and "Golden Child" were also canceled Sunday night. Most matinees on and off Broadway stayed open. Mondays are usually very light on Broadway, with most shows having that as their day off.

Some Broadway shows had no evening shows scheduled Sunday, including "Cyrano de Bergerac," ''Annie," ''Chaplin," ''Enemy of the People," ''Once," ''Jersey Boys" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It."

It was the most disruptive storm for the theater community since the threat of Hurricane Irene in late August 2011 prompted producers to cancel matinee and evening performances on Saturday and Sunday. While that hurricane mostly fizzled over New York, every show lost money because they were mostly limited to five or six performances that week.

Arsenal, Man City respond to Euro woes

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:18 p.m. ET Oct. 27, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Manchester City and Arsenal responded to midweek Champions League setbacks with unconvincing 1-0 wins in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Carlos Tevez secured City's victory over Swansea, putting the champions a point behind Chelsea before the leaders host Manchester United on Sunday.

"They sat quite deep and made it difficult for us to get the ball forward," City midfielder Gareth Barry said.

It took Mikel Arteta's late goal for Arsenal to overcome winless, 10-man Queens Park Rangers and rise to fourth - seven points behind Chelsea.

While Arsenal's attack lacked cutting edge, the team was boosted by midfielder Jack Wilshere successfully returning after 17 months out of competitive action.

"It's been a long journey but I'm back now ... we didn't underestimate QPR and knew they were going to be strong, especially from midfield and the wingers," the 20-year-old Englishman said.

The match at Etihad Stadium was the longest since the Premier League's inception in 1992, with more than 12 minutes of stoppage time after potentially serious injuries to Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm and City defender Micah Richards led to them being carried off during the second half.

Vorm is set to be out for up to six weeks, Swansea manager Michael Laudrup said.

The only goal came in the 61st minute, with Tevez sending the dipping shot into the bottom corner of the net beyond Vorm, who was injured while stretching to save.

Richards was later running down the pitch when he went down in agony holding his right knee. After receiving oxygen on the pitch he was carried off.

At Emirates Stadium, Arteta's winner came four minutes after QPR defender Stephane M'Bia was sent off in the 80th for kicking out at Thomas Vermaelen while on the ground after being fouled by the rival defender.

Olivier Giroud's initial header from Andrei Arshavin's cross was saved by Cesar but Arteta pounced to head against the bar and he prodded the rebound into the net.

The win lifted some of the gloom after successive losses in the league and Champions League.

"I am very happy with the result because we lost two big games and you could see the confidence was a bit jaded," manager Arsene Wenger said. "But we were serious and we moved the ball quite well. We needed to be patient."

Wigan emerged victorious for the first time at home this season as West Ham was beaten 2-1.

Ivan Ramis volleyed Wigan in front in the 8th and James McArthur's goal early in the second half proved decisive as James Tomkins pulled one back for West Ham in stoppage time.

There was also a late goal at Reading, with Hal Robson-Kanu retrieving a 3-3 draw with Fulham - the fourth goal in the last 13 minutes.

Reading remains in the relegation zone, clear of Southampton on goal difference and a point ahead of QPR.

Aston Villa and Norwich are just out of the drop zone after drawing 1-1.

Stoke endured a 0-0 draw with Sunderland but extended its unbeaten home run in the league to 11 matches.

---

BERLIN (AP) - Borussia Dortmund won 2-0 at Freiburg to get its Bundesliga title defense back on track in difficult conditions on Saturday.

Heavy snowfall hampered both teams in a hard-fought game.

Neven Subotic scored in the 54th minute and Mario Goetze made the game safe for Dortmund with seven minutes remaining.

Jefferson Farfan's 77th-minute strike was enough for Schalke to complete a perfect week with a 1-0 win at home over Nuremberg. Schalke won the Ruhr derby against Dortmund last weekend and then 2-0 at Arsenal in the Champions League midweek.

Wolfsburg beat Fortuna Duesseldorf 4-1 away to end its seven-game run without a win in interim coach Lorenz-Guenther Koestner's first game in charge.

----

PARIS (AP) - Lille bounced back from its midweek Champions League defeat by beating Valenciennes 2-1 in the French league on Saturday.

Lille, which lost 1-0 at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, made the perfect start when Valenciennes defender Gaetan Bong turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Lille striker Nolan Roux in the second minute as they were both stretching for a loose ball.

Valenciennes midfielder Carlos Sanchez was sent off in the 28th for picking up two quick yellow cards.

Lille got its second goal just before the break when forward Salomon Kalou broke free and passed wide to winger Dimitri Payet, who scored with a powerful low shot across goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau.

Anthony Le Tallec pulled a goal back for Valenciennes with 20 minutes remaining after a fine run and pass from midfielder Gael Danic.

---

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Malaga remained third in the Spanish league after drawing 0-0 at struggling Espanyol on Saturday, while Salva Sevilla's early goal gave Real Betis a 1-0 home win over Valencia.

Malaga outplayed Espanyol in the first half, with defender Martin Demichelis coming close with a pair of headers at Cornella-El Prat stadium.

In Seville, Betis midfielder Sevilla drove his volley past goalkeeper Diego Alves, who got a hand to the ball but not enough to keep it out, to score what proved to be the winner in the ninth minute.

---

MILAN (AP) - Serie A strugglers Siena and Palermo played out a dull goalless draw on Saturday, in a clash between the league's bottom two clubs.

Both teams struggled to carve out goalscoring opportunities. Palermo fared the better in the second half but failed to score for the sixth time this season.

---

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Christos Aravidis scored twice, including an 87th minute winner, to lead Panionios to a 2-1 victory over host Panthrakikos in the Greek league Saturday.

Aravidis had opened the scoring in the 18th but Juan Manuel Munafo equalized for Panthrakikos in the 59th.

The win propelled Panionios to second place in the Greek league, 3 points behind leader Olympiakos. The defending champion will have the chance to widen its lead when it travels to Aris Monday.

Panionios moved ahead of PAOK, which was held to a scoreless draw at Kerkyra, prompting an angry PAOK coach Giorgos Donis to declare after the game that his players failed to follow any of his instructions.

Also Saturday, Levadiakos and Asteras played to a scoreless draw.

Sandy bringing floods, winds, snow -- but where?

The entire Northeast coast was told Friday to be prepared for flooding, high winds, widespread power outages and even snow early next week as Hurricane Sandy made its way north after killing 41 people in the Caribbean.

"It will be unpredictable until the last minute," Jim Cisco, a forecaster at the National Weather Service's prediction office, told NBC News. "That really is the truth of the situation ... we're not sure how it's going to behave."

That's because Sandy will be making a hard west turn from the Atlantic, a rare occurrence. "It's coming in at a sharper angle" than previous storms because cold air moving in from the Northern Plains is undercutting Sandy's circulation, Cisco added.

On top of that, a new lunar cycle will bring high tides Sunday, Monday and Tuesday -- adding to the storm surge from Sandy.

On Friday evening, Sandy was packing 75 mph winds and was centered about 75 miles north of Great Abaco Island and 400 miles southeast of Charleston, S.C. The hurricane was moving northward about 7 mph. Hurricane force winds extended 35 miles from Sandy's center; tropical storm force winds reached out 275 miles.

"We haven't had much precedent for a storm like this," Cisco said. "Its effects may surprise even us."

Here's a look at what some of those effects might be:

Storm surge: It's still too early to predict exactly where the surge will be worst, James Franklin of the National Hurricane Center told reporters Friday, but "somebody is going to get a significant surge impact from this."

NBC News meteorologist Bill Karins said current data indicates "the most likely location for this to occur is along Delaware/New Jersey shores followed by Long Island and coastal Connecticut."

High winds: Those will blow through an area "several hundred miles across," said Franklin, adding that New York City could see tropical storm force winds.

Karins expected "40-60 mph sustained winds over the region for 24-48 hours. Gusts along the coast could reach 80 mph, while inland gusts will likely peak in the 60-70 mph range."

Heavy snow:??Parts of West Virginia and the Appalachian corridor are likely to see more than a foot and possibly up two two feet, Louis Uccellini, director of the National Centers for Environmental Protection, told reporters.

Rainfall: 5-10 inches are expected from the Outer Banks up into New York City, Karins said. "River levels are currently running low which helps, he added. "Flash flooding of small creeks and streams is certain due to high rainfall rates but major rivers have a better chance of staying within their banks."

Landfall: Sandy's core could hit anywhere between the Mid-Atlantic and the New York? area. F or now, Cisco said, Sandy is projected to make landfall near Delaware Bay, just south of New Jersey.

Video: Carolinas, East Coast on watch for Hurricane Sandy

Although Sandy is not forecast to be as strong as other recent storms to hit the Northeast -- such as Hurricane Irene in August 2011, which left $4 billion in damage -- it holds the potential to cause significant damage because it will be moving slowly.

Some experts predict at least $1 billion in damage in the United States.

BreakingNews.com's coverage of Sandy
Story: Tips on preparing for Sandy
Story: Busy Atlantic storm season tied to lack of El Nino
Story: Sandy could mean travel trouble

"It's almost a weeklong, five-day, six-day event," Cisco said. "It's going to be a widespread serious storm."

Sandy could even weaken to below tropical storm status but "that doesn't matter much with respect to impacts," Uccellini said.

"The legacy of this storm will likely be coastal storm surge flooding and power outages," Karins said, while adding: "Everyone within 200 miles of the Northeast coast should hope for the best, but prepare for the worst: 5-7 days without power and short term loss of fresh water."

Sandy will also be hitting the Northeast on the 21st anniversary of the infamous "Perfect Storm" of Oct. 30, 1991, that killed six fishermen.

In related developments:

  • Most of Florida was under a tropical storm warning, with coastal areas seeing high surf, winds and rain.
  • In New Jersey, Cape May County urged people to leave its barrier islands by Saturday.
  • Philadelphia urged residents of flood-prone neighborhoods to leave their homes by Sunday afternoon.
  • Maryland and Virginia declared a state of emergency so as to free up resources ahead of time.
  • New York City said it will suspend all construction work starting Saturday and until further notice. The worst for the city should be Monday through Tuesday, NBCNewYork.com reported.

Caribbean deaths, damage
Sandy was exiting the Bahamas on Friday, having weakend from a Category 2 to a Category 1 overnight.

The number of deaths blamed on Sandy's torrential rains and heavy winds jumped to 31. Below's a look by country.

Haiti: Sandy triggered flash floods and landslides that killed 26. The dead included a family of five in Grand-Goave, west of the capital Port-au-Prince, killed in a landslide that destroyed their home, authorities said.

Slideshow: Sandy barrels through the Caribbean (on this page)

Cuba: 11 deaths were reported, among them a 4-month-old baby, NBC News' Mary Murray reported from Havana. Most were killed by falling trees or in building collapses in Santiago de Cuba province and neighboring Guantanamo province. Hundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged.

Dominican Republic: Two deaths were reported but details were not available.

Bahamas: A death was reported and some islands saw extensive damage. "It was way stronger than we expected," said Joel Friese, general manager of the Stella Maris Resort on Long Island. "There are lots of downed trees and partial to heavy roof damage on some of the buildings." Several islands also saw power outages.

Jamaica: A man was crushed by a boulder and many areas were flooded or saw wind damage on the eastern side of the island.

Surface interest, Win 8 caution on release day

22 hrs.

U.S. shoppers woke up with mild Surface fever on Friday, lining up in moderate numbers to buy Microsoft's groundbreaking tablet computer designed to challenge Apple's iPad.

The global debut of the Windows 8 operating system was greeted with pockets of enthusiasm, but not the mania reserved for some previous Apple launches.

Microsoft is positioning the slick new computing device, which runs a limited version of Windows and Office with a thin, click-on keyboard cover, as a perfect combination of PC and tablet that is good for work as well as entertainment.

"I like the flexibility of having the keyboard and the touch capability," said Mike Gipe, 50, who works in sales for bank Barclays, and was planning to buy a Surface tablet at Microsoft's pop-up store in Times Square in New York.

"It's the combination of having the consumer stuff and the work stuff," he said, looking forward to using Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations on the new device.

The Times Square store was the first to sell the Surface???Microsoft's first ever own-brand computer???and other Windows 8 devices late on Thursday and will be open through the holiday shopping season. On Friday morning it was crowded with a mix of tourists and local office workers, but the cash tills were not jammed.

"With the other tablets you're a consumer. With this you can have input," said Peter Townsend, on vacation in New York from Australia with his wife, who bought a Surface tablet because he liked the keyboard.

Mark Pauluch, 28, who works for a New York private equity firm, said he would like a Surface because he does not want to take a laptop on a plane, but was disappointed when the sales representative told him the wifi-only Surface would not work with Cisco VPN networking.

"I can't use this to replace my work laptop unless it supports VPN," he said.

Elsewhere in the United States, there was solid but not overwhelming interest for the Surface.

"It's a good tablet. I am not a huge i-anything fan, I like Windows," said Matt Shanahan, a software developer who drove four hours to the tiny Michigan Avenue pop-up store in Chicago from Grand Rapids, Michigan to buy a Surface. "My friend and I are software developers and this gives us an opportunity to develop new apps," he said.

In a pop-up store at the San Francisco Centre mall about 50 people lined up to buy the new Surface.

"On an iPad you have to use half the screen for a keyboard, or buy an accessory. I love that the Surface is so integrated, that you can type and use Word and all my other programs," said Malte von Sehested, a textbook creator who bought a Surface.

"With the Surface you get a steeper learning curve???I had to get someone to show me how to side-swipe, swipe out to get the menus for instance," he said. "It may take a week, before it all becomes natural. That could be a problem for Microsoft. My old dad, he would get hit by that steeper learning curve."

Wall Street and tech industry experts failed to show great enthusiasm for Windows 8, but were prepared to give Microsoft time to succeed.

"Microsoft did not come out with Windows 8 thinking it will be an overnight success," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets. "But there's hope that this could be the silver bullet of growth (for Microsoft) as well as giving the PC industry some optimism that there's better days ahead."

The next six to 12 months is a "crucial period" for Microsoft to get traction with consumers, added Ives.

Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst at tech research firm Forrester, said consumers may be best served waiting for tablets running the full Windows 8 Pro and Intel chips, which are due out early next year.

"Windows 8 has a lot of great features, but RT has a long way to go," she said, citing a lack of apps and poor video performance on the Surface.

"It's not really a PC. RT is too restricted. Some people will be happier with the full Windows 8," she said.
