Classic Legacy Personalized Gifts Business Travel & Stopping ...

I am on my way today to Omaha, Nebraska for an important meeting with Borsheims.? I have?three days to get to my destination.??? Today my mind is on my long time family?friend, Mike Knaus, who has just been in a horrible accident.?? Today as I was driving I decided that I needed to stop along the way and ?smell the roses???.but it is Fall and instead of roses I?m finding many other delightful things.?? I want to share my journey with you today.

Cotton is White for Harvest

As I journey through?the?farm land outside of Memphis and into Arkansas I just see fields of white.?? It is cotton!?? This is a beautiful time to see the cotton just?as it is ready to be picked.?? Many combines are out also.? I could not resist taking some photos.??This is how the idea of taking photos along the way began. (I am using my iphone.)

?Soybeans Near by Lunch Stop

These soybeans were within steps of the place I chose to stop for lunch.?? The large field brings to mind ?America the Beautiful?? ?..O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain, ??..These are soy beans in the field?..drying and soon ready to be harvested.? When you see an entire field it looks more golden but I wanted you to see the beans close up.

Pumpkins in St. Louis

I must admit these pumpkins were at Trader Joe?s in St. Louis!?? I did however see pumpkins growing in several fields along the way?..but I got a close up view of these when I stopped for a break in St. Louis.

Cornfields in Missouri

Daddy used to grow corn.? It was always one of my favorite crops.?? Many fields have already been picked so when I spotted this field I just had to stop and take a photo.

?Autumn Trees at the Farm

I arrived at the farm and noticed this glorious tree.?? It is a standout??but even more than this tree other circumstances are standing out to me?..there is a man I?ve never met before at the grain bin helping to get the soy beans havested??you see this is what Mike would normally be doing but now his friends are all here!? This tree symbolizes the beauty of all the activity that I am about to discover.

Soybeans Harvested

Mother and I drove up to the grain bin and discovered soy beans gushing for the truck being fed to the augur and into the storage bin.?? There are three huge trucks here transporting soy beans to the bins.?? There are three big combines harvesting soy beans.?? There are seven pick up trucks?..and men and women who are all friends of Mike helping to harvest soybeans!??? This is a wonderful site!

Friends and Family Appreciated

Please continue to pray?for my friend, Mike.?? He has been such a help to our family for so many?years.?? Today I saw friends of Mike in action and they were still working as the moon was in the evening sky.?? I am glad that I stopped to??smell the roses? along the way today.

Fighting Ants is a Real Phoenix Real Pest Control Battle

Tweet This Even this seasoned Phoenix pest control professional can learn new things ever now and then. I attended a small workshop on ants recently and I was amazed at the amount of change that occurs in such a short time.

At this workshop, I learned that one particularly hard to control ant the Rove ant (brachymyrex), the Raspberry Crazy ant, and a couple other small ants that were not commonly known to be a major pest ant have steadily been on the rise. Of course, one of the attendees asked, "WHY"?

The good Doctor Said, "some of our products are so good, that we have in affect really did a number on one species of ants". Why is that important, another asked. Well, the doctor said, "that some species of ants are very territorial, and keep the rest out of the house"

So in our efforts to perform a great pest control service on ants, we have taken care of one ant and opened the door for another.

Oh, I know . . . lots of questions. All over the room, hands are up, reminds me of Welcome Back Kotter, for those of you old enough to remember, OOH, OOH, Mr. Kotter, sorry -- quick trip back in time.

The problem

The great product that wiped out the first real troublesome ant, doesn't work so good on the smaller ants.

The smaller ants don't really have a predator keeping them at bay any longer and now they are foraging in new places -- like your kitchen sink and bathrooms.

The smaller ants, aren't just small -- they are tiny, tiny, tiny, and hard to keep out.

These ants while not new, were not common and were not invasion pests in the past, so they are not easily identifiable without specific training.

The Solution

Consumers do not want to try and tackle ant control on their own. Sorry DIY'rs, but in most cases, when you tackle ant control you only make the problem worse. Pesticides can cause a process called, "BUDDING". An easy way to understand is: Survival of the Fittest. The ants will survive -- they will spread their eggs out and start numerous new colonies.

Think about it, all your DIY's, you know this is true. You went to the hardware store, bought a can of pest control stuff, the can said to use, 2 ounces per gallon of water, you said the hell with that and used the whole can! Lol I'm going to kill these little #$ percent^@# percent&'s and you sprayed with a vengeance. Got em, right? 3 to 4 weeks later you notice that you have more ants than you have ever had before, right? Come on, you know it's true!

Well, That being said, these new species of ants are going to be the worst, and as a professional in the pest control industry for over 22 years, please let me advice you! Ants are very difficult to take care of, and if you try it yourself, your only going to make it worse. Call a professional like Invader Pest Management, we are always going to school to learn the latest greatest techniques, find out about the best products on the market, and training our employees to be the best Ant Control Experts in Phoenix Arizona.

(AP) ? George W. Bush says that after eight years in the White House, he's happy to be back home in Texas and out of the spotlight.

But the former commander-in-chief tells The Associated Press there's one aspect of his presidency he still misses: interaction with U.S. troops. And Bush, who sent them to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, says that despite his desire to remain largely out of the public eye, he wants to make sure veterans and military members know they still have his support.

"I was a little concerned that our veterans don't think that I still respect them and care for them a lot," Bush told the AP. He added later, "There's nothing as courageous in my judgment as someone who had a leg blown off in combat overcoming the difficulties."

Bush is hosting next week's Warrior Open golf tournament in suburban Dallas, an event featuring members of the U.S. Armed Forces wounded while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, including those who lost limbs and suffered brain injuries. Bush joined more than a dozen wounded military members in the Warrior 100 ? a 62-mile mountain bike ride he hosted in West Texas last spring.

These public appearances are the exception to the lifestyle Bush has led in his post-presidency.

After leaving office two years ago, Bush and former first lady Laura Bush bought a house in Dallas and started work on the George W. Bush Presidential Center, slated to open in 2013. He has attended select events relating to the center, as well as a ceremony with President Barack Obama marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But he has largely remained out of the public eye.

Bush said he doesn't want veterans to mistake his private nature with a lack of appreciation for what they've done on the battlefield.

"They hadn't seen me and they hadn't seen me with the troops," he said. "So therefore I am using mountain biking and golf to stay connected with the military, people who served during my presidency."

Military members and veterans groups have generally held Bush in high regard, despite the nationwide protests and international controversy that grew more fervent as the American death toll grew in Afghanistan and Iraq under his command.

More than 1,680 military members have died in Afghanistan since the U.S. began bombing there in October 2001, while more than 4,470 military members have died in Iraq since the war began there in March 2003. Another 46,000 have been wounded in both campaigns.

"What I'm concerned about is that Americans forget the sacrifice," Bush said. "I don't think they are right now, but one of my objectives is to make sure they never do."

Bush, who since leaving office also has made appearances at events for organizations that benefit troops, said he gets inspiration from meeting members of the military who have overcome serious injuries. He said there's not much he misses about the presidency, but added he does miss being commander-in-chief because he has "great respect for those men and women who wear the uniform."

Brian "Ski" Donarski, 43, is among the veterans Bush has invited to the two-day golf tournament that starts Monday. The Army first lieutenant was seriously wounded when a mine blew up in Iraq in 2006 and spent 13 months rehabilitating from a traumatic brain injury, a fracture in his neck, bulged disks in his back and undergoing shoulder surgery.

Though Bush has spent most of the past couple of years out of the limelight, Donarski never doubted the former president's commitment to the troops.

"I know he didn't forget us," he said.

David Hartley, police chief of the small southeast Texas town of Hempstead, also supports Bush, even after losing his 25-year-old son, Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Lee Hartley, in 2008 in Iraq. For the last two years, the chief has organized the Watermelon Run for the Fallen in Hempstead to raise money for organizations that help veterans and their families. Hartley, whose last run drew about 3,500 people, also said he's never doubted the Republican president's commitment to the troops.

"The man literally cares for our troops and I have the upmost respect for him," Hartley said. "Everything he does, he does from his heart."

Besides interacting with veterans and service members, Bush plans to stay involved in public policy through his already-active institute, which focuses on education reform, global health, human freedom and economic growth.

But, he makes clear, "I don't miss the fame." He said he and Laura are content with their life back in Texas, where he served as governor for six years before winning the presidency.

"We've got a lot of friends down here," Bush said. "It's been fun to reconnect with them."

Passing of an Icon ? Computer Ed Radio

steve2There have been a ton of articles about Steve Jobs hit the web over this last week, not to mention enough TV coverage to think a head of a state rather than the head of a tech company had passed. As I have listened to this coverage I find myself conflicted. Everyone knows that I am not a big fan of Apple yet I would be a fool to not acknowledge that Jobs was a real force in the move to get personal PCs into homes. Yet while I mourn the loss of this icon to the hobby I love so much I am also, almost sick at the misinformation that people are putting out about the man, so I will give my good bye to Steve here and hopefully help people understand a bit more truth.

Steve Jobs was a brilliant man with an amazing gift, he was a true futurist. What I mean by that is he could see forward and have an understanding at how certain trends in technology would play out. This was an amazing gift that he made good use of. Apple was the first steve3serious computer company to spring up directed at the home market. Oh sure you had Commodore and Atari, you also had Timex and Texas Instruments chime in for a time as well. You see these other companies produced what were essentially tech toys, where Apple made a real computer by comparison.

This was a move that scared other major computer makers that focused on the business world because they did not see the future of computing in homes. I truly feel Steve saw what we now have today even then.

As the computing hobby began to grow the toy makers began to pull off the road and eventually die out, while Apple kept going. However Apple saw it?s first major hurtle come forward, IBM. When IBM realized the future of the home market they enter it in full force and opened the standard for what we now call the PC. This open platform allowed ?kit? PCs as well as market competition that caused Apple to fall from the forefront to an also ran.

However Steve saw a new direction and took it, he realized that a computer in a home needed to be more than a beige blocky box, it needed to have a personality of it?s own, a style that fit the home. This was where we saw the true genius that was Jobs grab hold. Steve would look at technology that existed, stuff that was already working and then he would think outside it?s original design box.

He would take that geeky tech and twist it slightly, skew it a bit and then make it look cool. He could see forward and see how that tech could be used in a way not originally conceived on it?s creation to get consumers excited about it. His talent was seeing how the consumer stevewould respond to tech and what they would want from it.

You cannot look at a personal computer today and not see a little influence from Jobs on it. Jobs was one of the first to realize a graphical interface would appeal to a broader base than a text based one, he wanted to hip up the PC. He was one of the first that realized that people would respond well to smaller form factors in PC design as well as shapes other than the simple box.

When I think of Steve I realize we have been taught two lessons, one good and one bad. The good lesson he has left us with is that function does not mean there has to be a lack of style. We can take these geeky items we use and give them an artistic bend, make them something we like looking at. Sadly though this leads us to lesson two, as a society we will buy style and not care about substance. This is a harder lesson for us to take but is none the less true, as a society we have gotten to the point that if it looks good we will buy it regardless of weather it performs as well as others

The industry will miss Steve. His drive to look at things in a way we did not and see an opportunity that others had not noticed. This drove the industry forward and opened up new areas that would have taken years longer if Steve had not led the way. So in closing I wish to say thank you Steve Jobs, thank you for helping us look outside the box and see other possibilities in technologies, other ways they could go outside their design envelope. You will be missed.

Credit Counseling Foundation Announces Online Tool for ...

Credit Counseling Foundation Announces Online Tool for Consumers

The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) today launched a new online financial resource tool for consumers, MyMoneyCheckUp?.

This free tool, available on the NFCC Web site, http://www.NFCC.org, or at http://www.MyMoneyCheckUp.org, is designed to provide an assessment of a consumer?s overall financial health and behavior in four designated areas of personal finance: budgeting and credit management, saving and investing, planning for retirement, and managing home equity.

This new tool was created to align with the U.S. Treasury?s Financial Education Core Competencies, and is an example of successful collaboration between community-based nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and the public and private sectors.

?The NFCC is proud to bring this new financial education resource to consumers,? said Susan C. Keating, president and CEO of the NFCC. ?People are eager to take control of their financial well-being, and the MyMoneyCheckUp tool is definitely the place to start.?
The tool provides customized feedback to users, allowing individuals and families to monitor and assess their financial lives, and consequently, adjust their behaviors in order to maximize their economic empowerment.

After answering a series of topic-specific questions, a personalized assessment of the individual?s overall financial health and associated behaviors is generated. With areas of concern identified, the analysis suggests changes that consumers are encouraged to implement in order to become more financially independent. The traditional red, yellow and green traffic light colors signal whether the consumer should continue on their current money path (green), proceed with caution (yellow), or stop and make a change (red). Individuals can also complete an optional budget to further help them assess their financial health.

NFCC?s implementation of this tool was made possible by a contribution from Citi Community Development.

?Online platforms that permit underserved people to monitor their economic progress are extremely valuable in making financial empowerment sustainable,? said Natalie Abatemarco, Director of National Programs for Citi Community Development. ?Citi has developed and supports similar tools in conjunction with other programs that provide access to savings and credit-building, and we will continue to work with our partners to enable people to remain actively engaged in their own economic empowerment.?

The original version of this tool ? created for research purposes ? was developed through the support of the Social Security Administration?s Financial Literacy Research Consortium as well as an Engagement Impact grant from The Ohio State University?s Office of University Outreach and Engagement, in partnership with the following researchers: Stephanie Moulton & C?zilia Loibl, The Ohio State University; J. Michael Collins, University of Wisconsin, and Anya Savikhin, University of Chicago.

Although the tool is now available to any consumer on http://www.NFCC.org or http://www.MyMoneyCheckUp.org, it will also be offered through NFCC Member Agencies and partners beginning in the fourth quarter of 2011, thereby increasing awareness and participation.

The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), founded in 1951, is the nation?s largest and longest serving national nonprofit credit counseling organization. The NFCC?s mission is to promote the national agenda for financially responsible behavior, and build capacity for its members to deliver the highest-quality financial education and counseling services. NFCC Members annually help more than three million consumers through close to 800 community-based offices nationwide. Stars must align to win a place on Walk of Fame (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Engelbert Humperdink has one. Clint Eastwood does not. John, George and Ringo ? yes. Paul McCartney? Not yet. And George Clooney would be in the club if only someone could convince him to show up for the ceremony.

When it comes to receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the sidewalk tourist attraction that encompasses 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three blocks of intersecting Vine Street, it's not so much who you know, but whether you're willing to play by the rules.

For starters, someone in the celebrity's camp must first fill out an application form that includes the star's signed promise that they will attend the ceremony.

No pledge? No ceremony. Which is why Eastwood, Julia Roberts and Clooney aren't among the 2,450 honorees lining Hollywood's sidewalks.

A five-member committee meets annually in June to consider some 250 to 300 applicants from five categories of the entertainment industry ? film, television, music, broadcast radio and theater, a category added in 1984.

As you might imagine, some of the candidates possess light resumes. Others wouldn't be able to show up for obvious reasons.

"We've had applications from Santa Claus and the duck that represents an insurance company on commercials," says Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez, who attends the voting meeting and decides where the stars are eventually placed on the street.

"Somebody insisted Shakespeare should have a star," Martinez adds.

Typically, the Walk's committee annually selects 20 to 24 new honorees, who must then pay a $30,000 sponsorship fee. This covers the cost of constructing the three-foot-wide stars as well as the cost of the ceremony. A portion of this money also goes to the Walk's trust fund for continued maintenance.

Of course, the honorees themselves rarely foot the bill. Recipients have five years to schedule their ceremony. Most celebrities time the event to coincide with a promotional opportunity.

"Stars like to make it a big deal," Hollywood Chamber of Commerce president Leron Gubler says. "That's the way they are. They get a little more bang for their buck out of it when they time it right."

Thus, September's star recipients Neil Patrick Harris and Jon Cryer scheduled their ceremonies to coincide with the fall premieres of their long-running television series, "How I Met Your Mother" and "Two and a Half Men," respectively. The shows' production companies each paid the $30,000 fee.

Rock star Melissa Etheridge, a recent honoree, saw her star unveiled in front of the Hard Rock Caf?, which, not coincidentally, paid her bill.

Etheridge used the ceremony both to thank her fans and launch Hard Rock's Pinktober breast cancer awareness campaign. Etheridge, 50, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and has been a spokesperson for the event for the past six years.

"It's forever," Etheridge says of her star, following a morning ceremony attended by an estimated 500 people, including many fans who traveled on their own dime from across the country to be at the event.

"We've been playing this fame game for 100 years here in this city of dreams," Etheridge adds, noting she came to the Walk of Fame when she visited Los Angeles as a teenager.

At 51, the Walk of Fame is roughly half of Hollywood's age, and many of its stars are in need of a little cosmetic surgery. Tree roots along Vine Street have caused the stars' black and pink terrazzo concrete to crumble. Heat and foot traffic are factors, too, contributing to the buckling of the stars' brass name lettering, borders and emblems.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce initiated a restoration project in 2008, grading each of the walk's stars. Nearly 800 were targeted to be repaired or replaced.

Raising the $4.2 million needed to complete the project hasn't been easy. Corporate sponsors have donated about half the total, to go along with money from private donors and a portion of the proceeds from the star ceremonies.

Though still short of the goal, Gruber says he hopes work can begin next year.

"We don't have the money to do the whole walk," Gruber says. "We'll start with the worst sections and go from there."

Redevelopment, including the Hollywood and Highland complex and its Kodak Theatre, the permanent home of the Academy Awards, have bolstered the fortunes of the walk's west end in the past decade.

The Walk of Fame, along with the famous movie star footprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, remain popular attractions for tourists visiting Los Angeles.

"They're iconic places that still resonate with people, though what's in the imagination probably doesn't align with the reality," says USC professor Leo Braudy, whose book "The Hollywood Sign" covers another area landmark.

"It's a way for people to connect with their favorite celebrities," Braudy continues, "though if you really want to meet one, you'd have a lot more luck going to the nearest supermarket."
