(Reuters) ? Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.N) forecast higher fourth-quarter revenue as it recovers from a manufacturing setback that has pinched the supply of its new personal computer processors.
AMD, a distant second to Intel Corp (INTC.O) in selling microprocessors that are the brains of PCs, said it was working with manufacturing partner GlobalFoundries to resolve the problem affecting its new 32 nanometer Llano chips as well as older 45 nanometer chips.
"We are already seeing steady improvement day after day, week after week, but we are not out of the woods yet," recently appointed Chief Executive Rory Read told analysts on a conference call.
That progress helped the Sunnyvale, California company give a forecast for current-quarter revenue that beat most analysts' expectations, even as AMD faces a shaky economy and weak consumer demand.
"They're gradually improving. Clearly their biggest problem in the quarter was supply-related and going forward my sense is they'll have a healthier supply level in the current quarter and beyond," said Patrick Wang, an analyst at Evercore Partners.
Intel said last week that brisk growth in first-time PC purchases by families in emerging markets like China was helping make up for soft demand for laptops in the United States and Europe.
That emerging markets strength is supporting sales of companies that make chips for PCs, while other parts of the chip sector suffer more from the slow economy.
"Just about everyone else in semiconductors is guiding for down 10 percent for the fourth quarter so anyone that's guiding up is seeing a different market," said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Kevin Cassidy.
SUPPLY-CHAIN OK
AMD does not expect a shortage of hard drives caused by recent flooding in Thailand to impact the PC supply chain and hurt business in the current quarter, Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert said on the call.
Like Intel, AMD has failed to gain traction in increasingly popular mobile gadgets like Google Inc's (GOOG.O) Android smartphones and Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPad, which some people are buying instead of laptops.
In August, AMD hired Read, replacing Dirk Meyer, who left in January partly due to differences with the board of directors over the company's mobile strategy.
AMD said revenue in the third quarter rose 4 percent from the year ago period, to $1.69 billion.
AMD said revenue in the fourth quarter ending in December would rise 3 percent compared to the previous quarter, plus or minus 2 percentage points, equivalent to $1.71 billion to $1.77 billion.
Analysts on average expected fourth quarter revenue of $1.71 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Non-GAAP earnings in the quarter were $110 million, up from $108 million in the year-ago period. Non-GAAP earnings per share were unchanged at 15 cents, beating expectations of 10 cents.
The company reported a net profit of $97 million, after a year ago loss of $118 million.
Shares of AMD rose 4.8 percent in extended trade after closing up 8.63 percent to $5.54.

SEOUL (Reuters) ? Samsung Electronics Co, the world's top technology firm by revenue, reported a 13 percent fall in quarterly profit, as the stellar performance of its handset business was overshadowed by a slump in its mainstay chip division.
Samsung, the world's second-biggest handset maker after Nokia, said its handset division saw operating profit more than double from a year earlier to a record high of 2.52 trillion won ($2.3 billion) in the third quarter, thanks to strong sales of its flagship Galaxy smartphones powered by Google's Android software.
Samsung's bread-and-butter chip business saw its profit more than halve to 1.59 trillion won from a year earlier, but it held up well as its relatively high exposure to lucrative mobile chips helped the firm offset a sharp plunge in prices of commodity computer memory chips.
Samsung was the sole profitable firm among major global DRAM chip makers in the third quarter, analysts said. Second-ranked computer memory chip maker Hynix Semiconductor and Japan's Elpida Memory swung to deep losses as prices of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips used in PCs tumbled about 50 percent in the third quarter.
Samsung's display business posted losses for a third consecutive quarter, as weak demand for TVs and PCs failed to offset strong sales of smartphones.
The world's top maker of memory chips and No.2 maker of mobile phones reported a 4.25 trillion won operating profit for the July-September quarter, in line with its earlier estimate of 4.2 trillion won.
That was down from 4.9 trillion won a year ago but up from 3.8 trillion won the preceding quarter.
Samsung trails Nokia in mobile phones, competes with Sony Corp and LG Electronics Inc in TVs, and Toshiba, Hynix in chips and LG Display in displays.
Its shares were up 0.76 percent as of 0013 GMT, trailing the broader market's 1.79 percent rise.
Shares in Samsung, also the world's top TV maker, have dropped 3 percent so far this year, outperforming a 6 percent fall in the KOSPI.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Twenty-five Egyptians left a jail in southern Israel on Thursday and were being bused to the border with Egypt ahead of a swap for a U.S.-Israeli citizen jailed in Cairo on suspicion of espionage.
The arrest of 27-year-old Ilan Grapel in Egypt in June set off new concerns in Israel that relations with the Egyptians would sour after the ouster of their longtime president, Hosni Mubarak. The swap deal was expected to help ease the strains that have developed between the two countries since Mubarak was toppled in February.
Grapel's father, Daniel Grapel, told The Associated Press that his son had been held in isolation in an unknown location and that when they last spoke two weeks ago, he seemed to be in "OK" condition and "getting fed."
"I am happy that this thing will be done and over with and that he will be able to resume his normal life away from Egypt," he said in a telephone interview from his home in Queens, N.Y.
Under a swap deal reached earlier this week, his U.S.-born son was to board a plane in Cairo later Thursday and fly to Israel. Daniel Grapel said his wife, Irene, flew to Tel Aviv to meet their son. They will remain in Israel for at least two days to meet with Israeli and American officials before returning to the U.S., he said.
Grapel was volunteering at a legal aid group in Cairo when he was arrested June 12 and accused of spying for Israel during the grass roots revolt that overthrew Mubarak. Israel denied the espionage allegations, as did Grapel's family and friends.
Grapel made no secret of his Israeli background and entered Egypt under his real name. His Facebook page had photos of him in an Israeli military uniform. Such openness about his identity suggested he was not a spy. The arrest was ridiculed even in Egypt, where hostility toward Israel runs high.
Grapel moved to Israel, where his grandparents live, as a young man. He did his compulsory military service in Israel during its 2006 war in Lebanon and was wounded in the fighting. He later returned to the U.S. to study.
At the time of his arrest he was doing a legal internship with a local nonprofit organization in Cairo and planned afterward to return to the U.S. for his final year of law school.
Some Israelis have criticized their government for making a deal to free a citizen arrested in a friendly nation on what they think were trumped-up allegations.
Since Mubarak was toppled, Egypt's military rulers have often warned against what they call "foreign" attempts to destabilize the country. And like other Arab states, Egypt has a long history of blaming internal problems on Israel.
Israel and Egypt signed their peace treaty ? the first between an Arab state and the Jewish one ? in 1979. Relations have been cool since, but Mubarak could be relied on to uphold the pact.
While the military leaders that now rule Egypt have vowed to follow suit, they have unnerved Israel with overtures to Israel's enemy, the Hamas militant group that rules Gaza, a tiny patch of Palestinian territory that borders both countries.
Those improved ties appear to have helped Egypt finally broker a long-elusive prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas last week, in which Israel traded hundreds of Palestinian prisoners for Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit, who had been held by Hamas in Gaza for more than five years.
Initially, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo had taken the lead in Grapel's case because he entered Egypt with his U.S. passport. A former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, Eli Shaked, said the U.S. was a main player in clinching the swap deal.
The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv had no comment on the affair.
A statement from U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman ? a Democratic congressman from New York for whom Grapel interned in 2002 ? said he had arrived Wednesday in Israel to bring home a constituent.

NEW YORK ? NBA owners and players called it an early night Thursday, with both pointing toward Friday as a decisive day for big moves to end the 119-day lockout.
Or not.
After two days of talks about the salary cap system, they will turn their attention back to the division of revenues, which derailed the negotiations last week.
This time, Commissioner David Stern said the talks had produced enough familiarity and trust "that will enable us to look forward to tomorrow, where we anticipate there will be some important and additional progress ? or not."
"But I think (union executive director Billy Hunter) and I share that view, and we're looking forward to seeing whether something good can be made to happen."
The sides again said there was some minor progress on the system issues after about 7 1/2 hours of talks. They decided to wrap it up and get some rest following a marathon 15-hour session Wednesday, and with union economist Kevin Murphy unavailable Thursday to discuss finances.
Hunter said he thought the sides were "within striking distance of a getting a deal" on the system, but there's still no indication either side is ready to make the big move necessary to settling the BRI split.
Owners have insisted they're not going beyond 50-50, which means the sides are still about $100 million apart annually, based on last season's revenues. Players have proposed reducing their guarantee from 57 percent down to 52.5, but they're unlikely to go much further without some concessions on the system issues.
"I think we're within reach and within striking distance of getting a deal," Hunter said. "It's just a question of how receptive the NBA is and whether or not they want to do a deal."
Asked when the significant move would happen, Hunter noticed Stern sitting in the back of his press conference and said to ask the commissioner.
"Tomorrow!" Stern yelled out.
"There are no guarantees that we'll get it done, but we're going to give it one heck of a shot tomorrow," Stern said a few minutes later in his press conference. "I think that Billy and the union's negotiators feel the same way. I know that ours do."
If they don't, Stern will have to decide whether to add more cancellations to the two weeks that have already been lost.
A full season might be difficult even with a deal this week. It takes roughly 30 days from agreement to games being played, so it's uncertain if there's still time for any basketball in November even before examining arena availability. But 82 games would be a boost for the players, meaning they wouldn't miss the paycheck that seemed lost when the first two weeks were scrapped.
It was widely expected Stern would announce further cancellations this week after talks broke down a week ago. Instead, the sides were in communication the next day, staffs met Monday, and they were back at the bargaining table Wednesday, acting on Hunter's recommendation to "park" the revenue split and focus first on the system issues.
Players want a system that looks a lot like the old one, where teams have the ability to exceed the salary cap and where contracts and their raises are guaranteed. Owners are seeking changes that they believe would create more competitive balance by removing the big market teams' ability to spend freely beyond the cap.
They have attempted to do that by increasing the penalties teams would have to pay for exceeding the tax level. Players argue the taxes are too punitive and would scare teams from spending, thereby creating a hard cap.
"Our position hasn't changed much," union president Derek Fisher of the Lakers said. "We're just trying to make sure that players have an opportunity to have a market for themselves and for their services, the same way we're trying to meet the league and our teams on all 30 teams being competitive."
Players have said the issues of the system and split are largely tied together, though Stern and Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver have said they believe they are separate.
The key question is whether owners will insist on having both ? and it sounds like they might.
"We need to resolve both issues and both issues are critical," Silver said. "One is not dependent on the other."
The sides again met in the small-group format that has been most successful in the lockout, with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and union vice president of the Knicks Roger Mason Jr. also joining the talks.
The sides have seemed close before, only for the talks to break down. It was the system issues earlier this month, followed by the split last week after three days of mediation.
They are hoping a deal can be completed by early next week, with the union believing if so there would still be enough time to reschedule the canceled games. But they've now arrived at what might be the toughest part, because it always seemed these talks would come back to money.
"We're working at it," Fisher said. "It's a tough process and as we move through and try to close the gap in as many places as we can, it gets tougher towards the end."

DALLAS (AP) ? Freight railroad Norfolk Southern says third-quarter profit rose 24 percent on higher rates.
Net income was $554 million, or $1.59 per share, compared with $445 million, or $1.19 per share, a year earlier.
Revenue rose 18 percent, to $2.89 billion.
The company earned more revenue from carrying coal and for intermodal shipments ? those that travel by rail and another means of transportation, such as trucks.
Railroads have been raising rates to boost revenue despite flat volume. That's helped them cope with higher fuel prices.
