Broncos to finish season in style

The difference Peyton Manning has made in Denver actually is measurable.

Try from 8-8, which the Broncos were a year ago in winning the AFC West, to 12-3. Try losing their final three games of 2011 and sneaking into the back door of the playoffs to winning their last 11 and moving into the postseason as the NFL's best team.

Those are the numbers, along with Denver (No. 1 in the AP Pro32) being a 16-point favorite over Kansas City (No. 32, AP Pro32), which is 2-13.

What Manning has brought to the Broncos in swagger, confidence and performance that has been impressive even by the four-time league MVP's standards.

Don't look for any temporary respite in any of those areas against the weak Chiefs.

"We talk about that a lot, not coasting, pedal downhill," coach John Fox said. "I appreciate him. I think that's a big reason why he's accomplished what he's accomplished, whether it's here or in Indianapolis. He's a tremendous competitor, doesn't let up. I think that's how you need to be to be successful."

Few teams have been more successful this season than the Broncos. Kansas City has no chance Sunday.

BRONCOS, 37-6

After this, Saints will be unburdened from bounties that damaged season.

NBC and NFL get their wish: tight game between archrivals to win division.

Patriots playing for a bye, just might get it.

PATRIOTS, 30-17

No. 3 Green Bay (minus 3) at No. 12 Minnesota

Shouldn't be playing hunches so late in season. But ...

VIKINGS, 24-23

No. 27 Arizona (plus 15) at No. 6 San Francisco

Minnesota's win gives 49ers shot at a bye.

49ERS, 30-9

No. 18 St. Louis (plus 10) at No. 5 Seattle

Our ears still are ringing from the noise level at CenturyLink.

SEAHAWKS, 31-20

These teams could meet in wild-card round next week.

RAVENS, 20-19

Big last stand for Michael Vick and Andy Reid? Nah.

GIANTS, 24-13

Reeling Bears still have playoff shot. Lions have packed it in.

BEARS, 27-17

No. 24 New York Jets (plus 3) at No. 25 Buffalo

Go with the losing team with less turmoil.

BILLS, 24-16

No. 23 Cleveland (OFF) at No. 17 Pittsburgh

Strange not seeing Steelers in contention. Not strange with Browns.

STEELERS, 17-13

No. 22 Tampa Bay (OFF) at No. 2 Atlanta

Falcons won't have meaningful game for two more weeks.

FALCONS, 27-23

No. 30 Oakland (OFF) at No. 21 San Diego

Nazca Lines: Mysterious Desert Drawings Form Labyrinth

Some of the Nazca Lines, mysterious geoglyphs that span a vast swath of the rugged Peruvian desert, may have once been a labyrinth with a spiritual purpose, a new study suggests.

The new insight, published in the December issue of the journal Antiquity, came because two archaeologists decided to use a decidedly low-tech method to understand the sand drawing's ancient secrets: by walking it.

At the time the Nazca Lines, which span 85 square miles (220 square kilometers), were drawn, "people were not looking at this stuff from the air, they were looking at stuff from the ground level," said Timothy Ingold, a cultural anthropologist at the University of Aberdeen, who was not involved in the study. "To appreciate what they might have meant to ordinary people, then you have to walk them."

While that seems like an obvious first step, in actuality, very few archaeologists have studied the Nazca Lines from that vantage point, because most of the pictures drawn out by the lines are only visible from foothills above or from space. ['Nazca Lines': Aerial Photos Reveal Mysterious Stone Structures]

The Nazca Lines have been a mystery since they were first discovered in the 1920s by Peruvian archaeologist Toribio Mej?a Xesspe. Long-forgotten people from the Nasca culture created the drawings between 200 B.C. and A.D. 500 by brushing away the dark top layer of barren desert to reveal the light, sandy soil underneath, wrote Clive Ruggles, an archaeologist from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, in an email. The dry, windless climate has preserved most of the carvings ? hundreds of depictions of animal shapes such as jaguars and monkeys, as well as geometric designs ? to this day.

But just why ancient people created the Nazca Lines has been an enduring mystery: Some archaeologists have suggested it was an alien landing strip, a primitive sun calendar, or an irrigation system.

"There is no simple answer. Different geoglyphs were clearly created over a significant period of time and almost certainly had a variety of meanings and purposes," Ruggles wrote.

Concerns about degradation of the mysterious geoglyphs prevented most traffic through the region since the 1990s. But when Ruggles and Aberdeen colleague Nicholas Saunders came upon a previously undiscovered set of lines north of the Nazca desert in 1984, they wondered whether the geoglyphs might reveal their secrets from a more terrestrial point of view.

Starting in 2007, Ruggles and Saunders spent 150 days walking 932 miles (1,500 kilometers) of the ancient carvings. They found the newly uncovered geoglyph was a single line that radiated out in a mystifying, confusing pattern, with a series of sharp, disorienting turns leading up to a mound whose purpose remains unknown. What's more, the meandering line was in pristine condition, leading the archaeologists to conclude that the paths that were carved out were rarely, if ever, used.

Many labyrinths have a spiritual purpose, so one possibility is that the paths weren't walked at all, but instead were intended for the passage of gods or spirits, Ruggles wrote. For instance, in the 5th century B.C. Herodotus mentions a vast Egyptian labyrinth that served as a mortuary temple, while the Hopi indians saw labyrinths as symbols of Mother Earth.

The researchers note this is still just speculation, Ingold told LiveScience.

"We still have absolutely no idea what these people were doing or what the point of it was," Ingold said.

Riunite Lambrusco - Wine Wednesday - Drink of the Week

post icon

For this week?s Wine Wednesday, we are heading back to the 1970?s and imbibing in it?s most popular wine ? Riunite Lambrusco.? As many of you may know, I love, love, love Lambrusco.? It is fizzy and fruity and pairs really well with food.? But, I had never had the wine that beget the craze in the United States ? Riunite.? As an aside, Riunite was one of the only Lambruscos available in the United States until 1994 when importers began bringing in other producers into the United States.? I don?t know why I never tried it.? As you know, I don?t shy away from ?budget? wine, I embrace them.? I guess that I never really sought out Riunite or thought out it.? But, conveniently enough, Banfi Vintners sent us some wines to try for the holidays and among the gems was a bottle of Riunite Lambrusco ? the one, the only, the original.? And, it was delicious!? Even better, it retails for only $5 a bottle and was one of the best $5 bottles of wine that I have tasted.

When thinking of wines to pour for your New Year?s Eve party, give the Riunite a try.? It is what I would call a ?cocktail party wine,? meaning that it?s great served on its own and doesn?t need food to enhance or tame its wilder tendencies.? Lambrusco always pairs wonderfully with cured meats, meatballs and cheeses so it?s a perfect accompaniment to cocktail food.

As an aside, Banfi Vintners does a great job at importing quality wines at prices that qualify for inclusion in Wine Wednesday with a nice selection of wines under $10.? And, Banfi also came up with the slogan of ?Riunite on Ice, So Nice? ? a jingle that is stuck in the head of anyone who lived through the 1970?s.? The tagline has been updated for the 21st century with ?Still on Ice, Still So Nice?.

Here is our review of the Riunite Lambrusco:

Appearance:? clear with a medium purplish-ruby color

Nose:? clean with medium, youthful, fruity notes of grapes, cherry, plums and a touch of violet

Palate: medium sweet, medium acidity, low alcohol, medium minus intensity of grapes, cherry, plums and a touch of violet with a medium minus finish.? Large bubbles with medium persistence.?

Rating:? Good to a very good wine that is easy to drink, fruity and bubbly.? Will help keep any party budget on track and great for popping open on a Wednesday night!

D.C. Police ? NBC requested and was denied ... - Legal Insurrection

As noted in an earlier post, an email has surfaced purporting to be from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department stating that NBC requested permission to use a high capacity ammunication magazine and that the request was denied.

The email first appeared on?the AR15 gun forum, and then at the The Patriot Perspective blog which first broke the Gregory story.

Here is the email, with the addressee?s identity removed:

?From: ?DC Police (imailagent)? <customerservice.mpd2@dc.gov>
Subject: Email from DC Police (Intranet Quorum IMA00519327)
Date: December 24, 2012 4:13:12 PM EST
To: -

The Metropolitan Police Department is in receipt of your e-mail regarding David Gregory segment on ?Meet the Press.? MPD has received numerous e-mails informing us of the segment. NBC contacted MPD inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for their segment. NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazines is not permissible and their request was denied. This matter is currently being investigated. Thank you for taking the time to bring this matter to our attention.

Customer Service ? Metropolitan Police Department?

Fearing the email was a hoax, I was cautious about running the text of the email. But as earlier reported, a confidential source who works for D.C. government verified that the email was in a format used by the MPD:

?? the Metropolitan Police Department email reply you received is genuine. DC Government uses ?Intranet Quorum? software designed by Lockheed to manage general inquires. The email address and the subject line of the email you received are consistent with that software.?

Now I have received confirmation that the e-mail is authentic.

(added) For much of the day yesterday and last night I sought confirmation from the D.C. Police.? After numerous emails exchanged last night and conversations this morning, I finally was able to receive the authentication needed, as well as confirmation of the request by NBC and denial by the MPD.

I forwarded the text of the email, exactly as it appears above, to?Gwendolyn Crump, Director, Office of Communications for the MPD, with the following question:

Can you confirm that is a real email sent from your system. I am informed that the email format is consistent with the Intranet Quorum format you use. Putting aside the substance of the investigation, I just want confirmation that it is a genuine email sent from your system.

I would appreciate your response on that specific question. Thank you.

Ms. Crump responded:

?Yes. I can confirm that what you sent appears to be the IQ system message.?

I further followed up to make sure that the email was an actual email sent by MPD, not just that it ?appeared? to be one, and Ms. Crump confirmed:

?Yes, that email was sent from MPD.?

Officer Aziz Alali of the MPD Public Information Office further confirmed the authenticity of the e-mail, and gave me this statement by telephone:

?NBC contacted the Metropolitan Police Department inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for this segment. NBC was informed that that possession of a high capacity magazine is not permissible and?the request was denied. This matter is currently being investigated and I cannot get into any further specifics on this investigation.?

NBC News has not responded to multiple inquiries?as to the request and denial, or whether the magazine was real or just a prop. During the segment in question, Gregory stated ?here is a magazine for ammunition that carries 30 bullets.?

If it turns out the magazine was in violation of D.C. law, the fact that NBC News was warned by the D.C. Police not to use the magazine puts a whole new light on the incident, turning it into an intentional violation of the law.? While the law does not require intent, the existence of intent could influence a decision whether or not to prosecute.

Update:? Thanks to all the blogs and websites who linked here and properly credited us with getting the D.C. Police to confirm?this story, including but not limited to, Instapundit, Huffington Post (!), Hot Air, The Daily Caller, Breitbart.com, and more ? Newsbusters.

As to this, well, at least there?s some emotional satisfaction:

Michael Chang tips about surprising the opponents ? Tennis News ...

Michael Chang tips about surprising the opponents ? Tennis News

American professional, Michael Chang, rocked the world in 1989 by clinching a Roland Garros French Open title at the age of 17. He was the youngest male player ever to register such a majestic milestone in his teenage.

The media reporters of The Tennis Space visited the 40-year-old American earlier this month and asked him to give some tips about dismantling the concentration of the rival. During his conquest at Paris, he shocked the world by hitting an under-arm serve against Ivan Lendl in the fourth round. It is something that we don?t often see at the elite platforms.

Commenting about upsetting the opponent with guile, Chang stated to The Tennis Space, "You don?t want to be predictable. It was Andre Agassi who first showed me how effective an underarm serve could be, and how you could unsettle an opponent. He used to do that in junior matches in the 12-and-unders and the 14-and-unders."

Remembering the event when he used that technique in the fourth round of the French Open, Chang added, ?It was a spur of the moment decision, really, for me to hit an underarm serve during my fourth-round match against Ivan Lendl at the 1989 French Open. He was forced to come in and he didn?t like that. I think that underarm serve changed the whole mentality of the match. After that, he became more frustrated that the match wasn?t going his way.?

Chang was one of the most agile players of his era. He moved quickly on the court and played from the baseline. He was the founder of the jumping double-handed backhand as well. He reached the career-high ranking of world number two in his professional career and stayed amongst the Top-10 players for a long period of time during 1990?s.

Chang registered five consecutive years of success at the elite podium. He maintained a consistent record from 1992 to 1997; scoring 58, 62, 66, 65, 63 and 55 victories in each year respectively. He said goodbye to the world of tennis in 2003 at the age of 31. It was a pleasure to witness such a prolific 5?9 professional athlete of 90?s.
