Washington Redskins Injury Report, Week 17: Roy Helu, London Fletcher Limited In Wednesday Practice

The Washington Redskins practiced Wednesday in advance of their season finale Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles and released the week's first injury report.

No Redskins player sat out of practice entirely, though the team elected to limit five players' participation due to injury: right tackle Jammal Brown (hip), defensive end Adam Carriker (chest), linebacker London Fletcher (ankle), running back Roy Helu (toe, knee), and wide receiver Dont? Stallworth (ankle).

"We'll just judge him as the week goes on," coach Mike Shanahan said of Helu, who's started five games for the Redskins in 2011. In Helu's absence on Saturday, fellow rookie Evan Royster made his first career start and gained 132 yards on 19 carries.

Three other injured Redskins appear on Wednesday's report, though they participated fully in the day's practice: safety DeJon Gomes (knee), wide receiver Niles Paul, and punter Sav Rocca.

Newt Gingrich Ad Rails Against "Liberal" Republican Establishment, Laments Lack of Funds

A new pro-Newt Gingrich ad airing in Iowa warns voters in advance of the Jan. 3 caucuses not to let the "liberal Republican establishment pick" a presidential candidate.

The ad is from pro-Gingrich super PAC Winning Our Future, which can spend unlimited funds as long as it doesn't coordinate with him directly. That's not shady at all.

The 30-second spot touts Newt's conservative credentials, accusing the Republican establishment of "attacking him with falsehoods" and outspending him 20-to-1.

Pretty funny in a way that a PAC that would obviously outspend Mitt Romney 20-to-1 if it could is lamenting its own underfunded status, but that's Newt for you.

On the flip side, he does have a point. The establishment does have some clout, but given the fluidity of this race, the conservative base is much broader.

Obviously the average voter isn't too swayed by what the powers that be tell them to be. But will voters come out to support Newt, or is he fading fast?

East Cleveland Mayor to Take Large Pay Cut

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio?

Just days after Christmas, the Mayor of East Cleveland found out he would be taking a huge pay cut.

Tuesday night, four attending council members voted unanimously to remove Mayor Gary Norton from his position as the city's public safety director, knocking his salary from $77,000 to $40,000.

"Nothing about East Cleveland is improved as a result of the decision that they made," said Mayor Norton. "In 2012, $40,000 a year is not fair compensation for the chief executive officer of the city, who is the mayor. The only people who can rectify that problem are the voters."

Council members say because of lost revenue the city has little choice when it comes to the budget. Mayor Norton says that is not true. "Not only did we cut the budget by 15 percent, we preserved the number of police and fire that we had."

City council said they also voted to cut 10 percent of the budget from most city departments. It is now up to the mayor to decide if those cuts will be made to personnel.

Norton says during his time in office he has brought in $16 million, in grant-funded projects. "We brought in grants more than we make a year, the reward for that, the leader of the executive team is to cut the mayor's salary in half. It doesn't make any sense."

According to the council clerk, council voted to fund the safety director position in 2009. The clerk says after Norton took office in 2010 he appointed himself to the position--a job that was not funded from 2005-2010.

One East Cleveland woman said she understood the council's position. "We didn't pay a mayor before to do it then, why should we pay a mayor now to do it?"

"If they didn't do it the last five years, we're in worse condition now, doesn't sound good if he's doing it now," said another East Cleveland resident.

Fox 8 News tried contacting the city council president seeking comment, but she did not return our phone calls.

Japan, India strike $15b currency deal

Japan and India have struck a $15 billion currency swap deal that could support the sagging rupee as Japanese premier Yoshihiko Noda made a lightning trip to New Delhi to push closer ties.

??
The deal was part of a slew of agreements clinched by India and Japan, which is seeking to forge stronger alliances in the Asian region as a counterweight to China's growing might.
??
"I am convinced we need to strengthen the economic partnership," said Noda, whose country sees India an attractive market with its increasingly affluent middle class, especially with the European and US economies slowing.
??
"Japan has technology and capital while India has a young workforce as well as abundant demand for infrastructure," he said, calling the "complementarity" between the second- and third-largest Asian economies "unmatched".
??
Coming on the heels of a trip to China where the main focus was on political diplomacy, heightened by the aftermath of the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, Noda's visit to India stressed economic relations.
??
The currency swap, under which Japan could lend India dollars to defend the ailing rupee, is an expansion of a $3 billion accord that expired earlier this year.
??
"Japan and India will expand their currency swap from a current $3 billion to $15 billion," Noda told a news conference in the Indian capital late Wednesday at the close of his 36-hour trip.
??
Japan, which has $1.2 trillion in foreign currency reserves, has been moving to enhance its global financial role, and struck a similar swap accord with South Korea in October.
??
The currency agreement is an extra weapon for India, which has $300 billion in reserves, to use in propping up the rupee.
??
The rupee has slid 15 percent this year against the dollar as overseas investors have withdrawn funds as they hunt for safe havens in the midst of global financial turmoil.
??
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was "extremely happy" with the outcome of his talks with Noda.
??
The two leaders said a landmark free-trade pact signed in February under which the high-tech nation and the South Asian giant will scrap tariffs on 94 percent of goods within a decade had huge potential for boosting commerce.
??
The countries' two-way trade stands at around $14 billion and is targeted? to rise to $25 billion by 2014 -- but that sum is still a fraction of Japan's $340-billion trade with China.
??
Noda also announced a $4.5-billion investment in an ambitious $100-billion infrastructure plan to create a manufacturing and freight corridor from New Delhi to financial hub Mumbai as well as $1.7 billion in loans for rapid transit and conservation projects.
??
The two countries also said nuclear negotiations that stalled after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011 were headed in the "right direction."
??
Japan and India launched talks in June 2010 on a nuclear cooperation pact that would allow Tokyo to export its cutting-edge technology to the energy-hungry South Asian nation, a hotly contested market for atomic plants.
??
Japan is worried that nuclear-armed India has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. But Japanese government spokesman Nori Shikata told reporters that "as a matter of basic policy we're interested in promoting use of Japanese civilian nuclear technology in India".
??
Prime Minister Noda said use of civilian nuclear technology could help India lower carbon emissions blamed for global warming but added he could not say when the talks might produce an agreement.
??
Ties between the countries have warmed only in recent years. Tokyo was traditionally a big lender to India but not a significant business partner and it was a strong critic of New Delhi?s unexpected 1998 nuclear weapons test.
