As Ford plant waned, many workers slow to prepare

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Ford announced it would close its St.
Paul assembly plant in 2006, but when the fateful day arrived last month, many of the 800 workers there still didn't have a plan for their next job.

The state has offered help for workers to write resumes and
sharpen their interviewing skills. Subsidized job training programs have been available for years.

But workers at the plant say working 50 hours a week left them
with little energy to look for another job, especially one that
would pay less than the $28 an hour they made at Ford.

The plant had 1,800 employees in 2006, but state figures show
only about 300 have finished the state's dislocated worker
training. The good news: 90 percent of those got jobs.

(AP) ? John White took his final hand-off of the day, followed his lead blocker and set of a celebration.

White plowed into the end zone from 8 yards out to give Utah a 30-27 overtime victory against Georgia Tech on Saturday in the Sun Bowl.

"They trusted me with the ball, so I saw Shawn Asiata blast somebody and I knew I was going to go in," White said. "As soon as the ball crossed the plain I looked up to the ref and saw his hands go up and knew it was a touchdown so I just wanted to go celebrate with my teammates."

Justin Moore kicked a 34-yard field goal in Georgia Tech's overtime possession to take a three-point lead, but White finished a 115-yard rushing day with the game-winning score on his 26th carry.

The Utes (8-5) tied it in regulation when Jon Hays hit DeVonte Christopher with a 28-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-14 with 1:32 left in the fourth quarter.

"There's no quit in these guys," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "They kept believing, coaches kept believing, and we found a way to win in the end."

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson was disappointed with his team's play in the fourth quarter.

"We couldn't block in the fourth quarter and the plays we needed to make just didn't happen," Johnson said. "It feels like somebody kicked you in the gut. When you are competitive, it really hurts"

The Yellow Jackets (8-5) drove to the Utah 31 with 2 seconds left, but David Scully missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt as time expired to send the Sun Bowl to overtime for the first time in its 77-year history. Moore had earlier missed two 42-yard tries for Tech.

"I thought (Scully) hit the ball good and I actually thought it went in but I guess it was a few feet to the right," Johnson said. "We didn't make enough plays and we missed three field goals."

Georgia Tech lost its seventh straight bowl appearance and Utah improved to 7-1 in bowls under Whittingham.

Georgia Tech's Preston Lyons, who came in with only 39 carries, rushed for a career-best 140 yards on 18 carries and Tevin Washington passed for 137 yards and ran for 97.

Utah grabbed a 7-0 lead on Asiata capped the game-opening drive with a 1-yard run.

With David Sims out of with an injury and Orwin Smith also ailing, Georgia Tech relied heavily on Lyons, who put the Yellow Jackets on the board with a 36-yard run up the middle tie the game at 7.

Lyons finished the first half with 129 yards on 12 carries.

"Defensively we were real soft against the running game in the first half," Whittingham said. "They had a nice scheme and showed us stuff we didn't practice. It took us a while to adjust to that and we gave a bunch of rushing yards in the first half however only seven points, which is the bottom line."

Coleman Peterson banked in a 25-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the first half to give the Utes a 10-7 lead.

A 27-yard punt by Utah set up Moore's 32-yard field goal to tie it in the third quarter.

The Yellow Jackets scored again on their next possession. Washington hit Embry Peeples with a 58-yard pass, then found Stephen Hill for a 31-yard touchdown to make it 17-10.

Moments later, Quayshawn Nealy picked off a pass by Hays and returned it down the sideline 74 yards for a touchdown with 4:14 left in the third quarter.

"We should have put the game away in the fourth quarter," Johnson said. "We didn't let up. We ran most of the same plays in the fourth quarter that we ran in the rest of the game."

Hays hit Kendrick Moeai with a 3-yard touchdown pass with 6:50 left in the fourth quarter to make it 24-17.

Hays went 15 for 31 for 193 yards.

Terra Noctis leads iPhone Games of the Week (Appolicious)

The holiday week has seen a freeze on adding new games to the iTunes App Store, but there are still plenty of great ones floating around. Leading this week?s charge is Terra Noctis, a side-scrolling platforming game that will remind players of the greats in the genre. Check it out, and four other quality titles, below.

A retro platformer with a great art style, Terra Noctis looks great and will remind you of the 2-D side-scrolling platformers of years past. The game?s touch controls are pretty solid on iOS, and there?s plenty of content to go around including hours of gameplay and massive boss fights. Terra Noctis does an admirable job of invoking classic games in the genre while adding a little something new to the equation. It looks and sounds great and includes support for achievements and leaderboards from Open Feint, as well as support for iCade.

Space is filled with valuable fuels, but powerful gravity wells created by huge asteroids make it impossible for spaceships to retrieve them. That?s where you and your remote-controlled probes come in. You?ll need to control your probe by firing its thrusters and using the gravity of asteroids to navigate each level. It?s your goal to grab the crystals and get out as fast as you can and with as little maneuvering as you can manage. The faster you go and the less fuel you use, the higher your score. It?s a pretty difficult game, but Gravity Rocks also requires some serious skills, which will appeal to players with a penchant for punishment.

A 3-D platformer, Crazy Hedgy looks a lot like console classics Crash Bandicoot or Sonic the Hedgehog, with a similar playing style. The main character is even a hedgehog himself, but instead of running around, Hedgy the Hedgehog chooses to roll, and you control him using your iOS device?s internal gyroscope. Tilting your device directs Hedgy around the screen, where you?ll need to snag gems to upgrade your abilities and fight off enemies. The game looks great, it?s optimized for newer iOS devices and its developers say Crazy Hedgy includes 10 or more hours of gameplay.

Great graphics and a challenging style mark Wind Up Robots, a base-defense strategy game that bucks the usual setup. The game?s controls are pretty simplistic. You choose which robots will be in your defense force at the beginning of each level, and then you deploy them as necessary. The idea is to defend your charge: a sleeping boy assaulted by nightmares. The nightmares fly across the level towards the boy with your robots standing in between, and you control them by tapping them and giving them orders on where to go. The robots do the rest, but the real strategy of the game is in choosing your forces, directing them in anticipation of enemies, and changing them out with other robots to keep them alive. Wind Up Robots looks good and offers plenty of challenge.

The latest of Telltale Games? licensed point-and-click adventure games takes on the iconic police/prosecutor drama, putting players in a story that includes appearances by tons of cast members from Law & Order. The first episode is a little straightforward, but it?s hard to argue with the quality of Telltale?s titles or with the production values found in this game. You?ll need to purchase future episodes through in-app purchases as they come out each month, but if you?re a fan of the Law & Order TV show, this is a fun way to get into the action in a new and different way.

No firm totally destroyed by tornado, storm

Damages to the Fairbanks Co. were conservatively estimated at $200,000. That figure is expected to rise significantly. (Doug Walker / Rome News-Tribune)

slideshow A week after an EF-2 tornado etched a swath across Rome and into neighboring Bartow and Gordon counties, a more thorough examination of the damages has resulted in an estimated dollar value for damages to local businesses in the neighborhood of $1.82 million.

The figure does not take into account any losses to residential properties.

Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director Scotty Hancock reported that two-thirds of the losses were incurred by just six businesses, all estimated to be at a minimum of $200,000, however, none were completely destroyed as preliminary assessments indicated.

The Fairbanks/American Pipe buildings, 202 Division St.; the former Habitat for Humanity HomeMart building, 617 Excelsior St.; Shorter University?s warehouse, 218 John Davenport Drive; Brenda White Insurance, 9 N. Hanks St.; the West Rome IGA shopping center on Shorter Avenue; and mini-warehouses at 702 Shorter Ave. were the businesses that were listed as having sustained major damages.

Keith Clark, owner of the West Rome IGA grocery, said he is still working on a final assessment of the damages at his store.

?Ours is over $100,000 in itself,? Clark said. ?Everything from roof damage to sign damage to throwing away over $70,000 worth of product ? produce, meat, the deli ? we just dumped it in the dumpster out back and watched it drive off.?

Clark said the entire roof over the shopping center is going to have to be replaced.

Similarly, Mark White, manager at the Fairbanks Co., indicated the $200,000 figure placed on their business is expected to be well below the actual cost of repairs to the building that essentially lost two exterior walls and a part of its roof.

Thirty-one other businesses or commercial establishments also sustained losses that are being listed as minor, meaning losses of at least $20,000 were estimated.

On Thursday night, Hancock learned that Floyd County became eligible for assistance through the Small Business Administration.

A disaster loan outreach center will open Tuesday from noon to 6 p.m. at the Northwest Georgia Public Health District office, 1309 Redmond Road.

The hours are: Jan. 4 through Jan. 6, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Jan. 7, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Jan. 9 through Jan. 12, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Hancock said Thursday he felt confident the county would be eligible.

?We?ve not only met but exceeded the threshold,? Hancock said.

Hancock said all they needed was 25 uninsured or under-insured properties to get the designation for assistance.
