Porky Pig

But that column will have to wait a little longer, because in examining the vast literature on cognitive studies of farm animals?and from all appearances, scientists? understanding of pig cognition is in a woeful state of disarray?I got distracted (as I often do) by matters of sexual deviance. Between writing my columns for Slate, you see, I?m often scouring the holdings of the Cornell University Library, doing my own research for a book on the psychology of moral outrage and its relation to human sexuality. (Ithaca, after all, was the birthplace of Vladimir Nabokov?s Lolita.) So, with those unsettled pigs still prancing about in my mind, it was only natural that my eyes would settle on a rather tangential nod to the genus Sus in a study of crime and punishment in Colonial New England. Social historian Robert Oaks had, like me, been interested in hogs?and for reasons that were, oddly enough, not altogether distinct from my earlier observation of their very humanlike rumps. It seems these animals were valued not so much for their minds or their meat, by some residents of early America, but as lovers. At least, that?s what many people thought at the time.

Are Aries More Likely to Be Criminals? (Time.com)

One Canadian city would like to caution you to beware of loved ones who claim Aries as their zodiac sign -- they might be more likely to break the law.

Canada's National Post reports that according to police in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, 203 of 1,986 people arrested last year were Aries, while Sagittarius came in as the least-arrested sign at 139. (See pictures of crime in Middle America.)

It sounds like it was a rather slow day for the city's police force, who compiled this ranking for the first time. The Chatham-Kent Police Service explained their method in a news release: "To provide an interesting astrological perspective, an algorithm was applied to all the arrestees' dates of birth."

Yet even the police themselves aren't taking the list seriously. "You can't really read too much into it," police spokesman Const. Michael Pearce told the National Post.

However, if one wanted to believe that sun signs do give some indication of personalities more prone to breaking the rules, Aries would seem fitting. The National Post's horoscope writer Georgia Nichols told the paper, "Aries is the sign of the warrior. Aries rules the military. Aries jump in head first, and love adventure." A fire sign, Aries are known to be bold, impulsive, hot-headed, and quick to temper -- traits that those landing in jail might seem to share. (Read "Horoscope Hang-Up: Earth Rotation Changes Zodiac Signs.")

Then again, the individual bad decisions of a few people (like noted Aries Adolf Hitler) who happen to share the same sign shouldn't speak to the character of an entire zodiac sign population (like sweetheart Aries actor Matthew Broderick!). But people really do love to make grand generalizations at times, don't they?

Nadal, Tsonga win 1st-round matches at Qatar Open

(AP) ? Rafael Nadal struggled past Philipp Kohlschreiber while defending Qatar Open champion Roger Federer routed Nikolay Davydenko in their season openers on Tuesday.

The second-ranked Nadal overcame Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3 in a match that lasted 2? hours. Federer, who lost badly to Nadal and No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic over the weekend at an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi, showed he had shaken off the rust by overwhelming the injury-plagued Davydenko 6-2, 6-2 in just 54 minutes.

Also, No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Tunisian wild card Malek Jaziri 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-1 and fourth-ranked Gael Monfils defeated Rui Machado of Portugal 7-5, 6-3.

Nadal, who has struggled with a sore left shoulder since the end of last season, started well and looked headed for a routine victory. But the 43rd-ranked Kohlschreiber stepped up his net play in the second set and jumped to a 4-1 lead on his way to evening the match. Kohlschreiber went up a break in the third but Nadal broke back and took control from there.

Nadal ripped a cross-court forehand past Kohlschreiber to go up 2-1 and then broke for 3-1. Helped by an improving serve and able to win most of the big rallies, Nadal jumped to 5-2 and closed the match with an acrobatic overhead smash and then a vicious cross-court forehand that Kohlschreiber couldn't reach.

"In general, for me, (this) was a really positive match," Nadal said. "I think I played a very good first set. The only moment that I didn't play well was the beginning of the second and after the tiebreak. For the rest, I think I played a very solid match."

Nadal admitted Kohlschreiber was a tough opening draw, since he often plays much better than his ranking would indicate. Nadal, though, has never lost to Kohlschreiber in eight meetings.

In a rematch of last year's Qatar Open final, Federer expected a tricky encounter with Davydenko. But it was clear from the start that Davydenko ? a former world No. 3 who has fallen in the rankings to 41st ? would be no match for the third-ranked Swiss.

Federer jumped to early leads in both sets. He had his service game working and repeatedly pounced on Davydenko's weak serves.

Hoping for a fourth title in Doha, Federer was able to move the Russian around the court at will as he racked up 18 winners to Davydenko's seven. Davydenko also hurt himself with 20 unforced errors.

"It was a good first match for me into the new season and I think it was a combination between me playing actually really well and Nikolay just not finding his range, you know, what we're used to seeing from him in the past," Federer said. "But I take these victories any time, especially against a top player like him."

Federer said he was most happy he bounced back from his play in Abu Dhabi, where he served erratically and struggled to break his opponents.

"I thought my forehand and backhand was working. I think I had good variation on my serve which wasn't the case last week," he said. "So I'm happy I was able to pull myself together and make that happen. So things have obviously changed here and I'm happy the conditions suit me."

Tsonga was challenged almost from the start by Jaziri in their first meeting. The 118th-ranked Tunisian kept Tsonga off balance, mixing in volleys and drop shots that had the third seed cursing to himself. But Tsonga could rely on his serve, which produced 12 aces.

The match turned in Tsonga's favor in the deciding set when the Frenchman started going to the net more often.

"It was good for me to play a long time, to stay a long time on the court," Tsonga said. "But it was not easy, not easy today. Malek was in good shape. With the wind, it was really difficult to play my best tennis."

54 fires over four days in Los Angeles

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Authorities believe the suspect is a foreign national from Germany
  • Harry Burkhart, 24, was charged with one count of arson of an inhabited dwelling
  • He will likely face more charges as the investigation continues, the mayor says
  • The fires caused some $3 million in damages

Los Angeles (CNN) -- A 24-year-old man was charged Monday with arson in connection with a rash of car and building fires across the Los Angeles area, authorities said.

Harry Burkhart was charged with one count of arson of an inhabited dwelling and will likely face additional charges as the investigation moves forward, said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Arson investigators counted 52 fires, most starting in parked cars, since Friday morning, but none since the man was was detained at 3 a.m. Monday, according to officials.

Burkhart is currently being held without bail.

"These were serious and potentially deadly crimes that needlessly endangered thousands of innocent lives," Villaraigosa told reporters. "These crimes will not be tolerated."

Burkhart is believed to a foreign national from Germany, according to Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck.

Authorities hope, and believe one arsonist acted alone, but will behave as though he did not until they know for sure, Beck said.

Burkhart's arrest came when a sheriff's deputy stopped a van near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood early Monday, said Los Angeles Fire Capt. Jaime Moore. The van matched the description of a vehicle believed related to some of the suspicious fires and the driver resembled a man seen in a surveillance video near the scene of one fire, he said.

The video showed a man who appears to be in his late 20s to mid-30s, with a ponytail, dark hair and a receding hairline.

No one was killed or seriously injured in the fires, though one firefighter and one civilian sustained minor injuries, said Los Angeles City Fire Chief Brian Cummings. Both he and the mayor estimated the fires caused some $3 million in damages.

Among the homes damaged was one that was once occupied by the Doors frontman Jim Morrison.

Eleven of the fires took place overnight, in the very early hours of Monday: nine within the city of Los Angeles and two in West Hollywood, fire department spokesman Cecco Secci said.

Cars were set on fire in Hollywood and Van Nuys, Moore said.

Los Angeles has not seen such a rash of fires since the city's riots in 1992.

CNN's Irving Last, Josh Levs, Drew Griffin, Stan Wilson and Casey Wian contributed to this report.
