Tory support soars amongst gay voters - Marilyn Stowe Blog

Support for the Conservative Party has almost tripled amongst the gay, lesbian and bisexual voters, according to a new survey by Pink News.

Support for the Tories has increased from 11 to 30 per cent since the last general election, the site reports, while Prime Minister David Cameron is now preferred by 47 per cent of gay voters, thanks to his plans to legalise gay marriage. Only 42 per cent of gay and lesbian respondents said they preferred Labour leader Ed Miliband.

A decisive 64 per cent of the survey participants said the Coalition government?s plans to legalise same sex marriage had improved their view of the Conservative Party ? 48 per cent said a little and 16 per cent said a lot.

Nevertheless, the majority of the survey participants still support Labour: 38 per cent, compared to 30 per cent for the Conservatives. Thirteen per cent said the supported the Liberal Democrats.

Pink News publisher Benjamin Cohen said: ?By proposing same-sex marriage, David Cameron has unquestionably improved the standing of the Conservative Party among the gay community. However, what?s most interesting is that he is considerably more popular than his party within our community. This perhaps reflects the fact that many of the most vocal opponents of introducing this final act of equality for gay people have been Conservative MPs, some of whom represent and have angered the very people who voted in the poll.?

Meanwhile, High Court judge Mr Justice Coleridge has criticised the government?s gay marriage plans, saying they should be concentrating instead on marriage breakdown.

Speaking to the Times earlier this week, the judge said:

?So much energy and time has been put into this debate for 0.1 per cent of the population, when we have a crisis of family breakdown. While it is gratifying that marriage in any context is centre stage? but it [gay marriage] is a minority issue. We need? a more focused position by the government on the importance of marriage.?

Earlier this year Mr Justice Coleridge set up the Marriage Foundation to campaign for long term relationships within marriage.

Dragonfly has human-like power of concentration

Dragonflies lack humans' big brains, but they still get the job done, according to new research that suggests that these insects have brain cells capable of feats previously seen only in primates.

Specifically, the dragonflies can screen out useless visual information to focus on a target, a process called selective attention. The new study, published Dec. 20 in the journal Current Biology, is the first to find brain cells devoted to selective attention in an invertebrate animal.

Selective attention is crucial for responding to one stimulus among the dozens of distractions that clamor for notice at any given time, said Steven Wiederman of the University of Adelaide in Australia.

    1. Science news from NBCNews.com

      1. The year's top ancient mysteries (and missteps)

The past year saw plenty of controversy over ancient mysteries ? and we're not just talking about Maya prophecies. So what happened to "Franken-saurus," the Gospel of Jesus' Wife and the plan to clone a woolly mammoth?

      2. 2,750-year-old temple found near Jerusalem
      3. Weird Science 2012: Sex, drugs and doomsday
      4. Peru's mysterious Nazca Lines form a labyrinth

"Imagine a tennis player having to pick out a small ball from the crowd when it's traveling at almost 200 kilometers an hour," Wiederman said in a statement. "You need selective attention in order to hit that ball back into play."

But little is known about how the brain locks onto its targets and ignores all else. To find out, Wiederman, who is from the university's Center for Neuroscience Research, and his colleague David O'Carroll turned to an unlikely animal. The researchers have long studied insect vision, and the dragonfly turns out to be quite adept in that arena. [ Photos: Dew-Covered Dragonflies & Other Sparkling Insects ]

"The dragonfly hunts for other insects, and these might be part of a swarm ? they're all tiny moving objects," Wiederman said. "Once the dragonfly has selected a target, its neuron activity filters out all other potential prey. The dragonfly then swoops in on its prey ? they get it right 97 percent of the time."

Using a glass probe with a tip 1,500 times smaller than a human hair, the researchers measured the neuronal activity that enables such amazing aerial hunting. A similar process is at work in the primate brain, O'Carroll said in a statement, but researchers weren't expecting to see the same thing in an insect that evolved 325 million years ago.

"We believe our work will appeal to neuroscientists and engineers alike," O'Carroll said. "For example, it could be used as a model system for robotic vision. Because the insect brain is simple and accessible, future work may allow us to fully understand the underlying network of neurons and copy it into intelligent robots."

Plenty of other insects have inspired robot designs. Swiss scientists, for example, have built a hovering drone that mimics insects in its ability to survive collisions with hard objects. Sometimes insects are recruited directly. North Carolina State University researchers reported in September that they'd managed to create cyborg Madagascar hissing cockroaches. The scientists wired a microcontroller to the insects' sensory organs, enabling them to steer the cockroaches' movements.

Increased Home Building Hints at Recovery in Macomb Township ...

Michigan?s residential building is nowhere near where it was at its 2004 peak, but in Macomb Township and across the state, the signs of recovery are unmistakable.

Home building is picking up in Michigan, with nearly 7,800 permits issued as of September 2012 ? a 32 percent increase over last year, according to the Home Builders Association of Michigan.

In Macomb Township, the number of residential building permits issued increased from six in January to 25 just one month later, in February 2012. This number peaked in March with 48 residential building permits approved for single-family homes and 16 condominium permits.?

?The market was definitely on the up-swing in Macomb Township this year. I believe the increase in home building is a sign of consumer confidence and an attraction to Macomb Township for people to want to live,? said Daniel Fairless, Macomb Township building official.?

The Home Builders Association of Michigan projects that across the state this year, approximately 10,400 new homes will be completed. While this number is up from the 8,001 recorded in 2011, it is only a fraction of the 44,782 homes built in 2004.

This optimism on the part of builders appears to extend across the state, according to a recent statewide survey of homebuilders and remodelers conducted by the HBAM.

Covering the time period of July through September 2012 ? the third quarter ? the survey showed the Michigan Housing Index at its highest level in two-and-a-half years, according to a press release from HBAM.

?The trend lines have been positive, so it is encouraging to see that the outlook for building continues to improve,? said Robert Filka, HBAM CEO, in a press release. ?We?ve got a long way to go before we see anything near normal historical production, but things are definitely headed in the right direction.?

The summer months were also fruitful for Macomb Township, with a total of 49 residential building permits issued in June, 54 in July and in 53 in August.?

Trustee and longtime resident Roger Krzeminski believes Macomb Township?s high numbers are due to many factors, including the township?s five school districts, the many newer commercial developments, and the selection of available homes in varying price ranges, he said.?

?The developments in the various parts of the township and school districts in those areas is what makes this township great,? he said.?

2012: The Year in TV Moments

    FOX, Dec. 16, 1:25 p.m. ET

Once upon a time there was a commercial for a phone I?ll never buy, advertising a technological frill I?d never use, implying a spice-up-the-relationship trick that I would not recommend, that was nonetheless the sexiest thing I?d seen on TV in quite some time. I?m speaking, of course, of the ad in which a wife sends her husband off on a business trip with a racy video, beamed directly into his Samsung phone via X-ray technology or whatever, with the sly admonition, ?Probably shouldn?t watch it on the plane.?*

Needless to say, this ad is silly. If there is anything we have learned from the travails of Hulk Hogan, it is that if a video of anyone doing anything sort of sexual exists on a Wi-Fi-enabled device, that video will somehow make its way to the Internet in the way that an air bubble trapped underwater will, eventually, make its way to the surface. This husband and loving father, who seems so cute and beardy and clueless, will, in the rush to make his plane, leave his phone in the cab. Nefarious elements will find the phone. Within days, his mother-in-law will be asked at book club: ?Was that your darling daughter I saw on YouPorn? ?

But it doesn?t matter. For in that moment, as the wife gives that little waggle of her eyebrows, the husband all at once realizes what she?s saying, and she gives a chipper wave and a ?Say bye to Daddy!?; they are the very picture of modern, technologically enhanced marital bliss. They are sexy and adorable. I would do anything to be like them (but I wouldn?t do that) (if by do that you mean buy a Samsung phone).

And then anyway, in the first quarter of Dec. 16?s early NFL games, Samsung ruined it by unveiling the ad?s follow-up?a shot-for-shot remake, like Gus Van Sant?s Psycho, with Santa and Mrs. Claus in place of the couple, and two elves in place of the kids. I love this ad even more than the previous one?not just because of general senior sex-positivity, but because it is so clearly the act of a company and an agency taking it juuuuuuust one step too far. It was such an obviously bad idea, but they did it anyway. The best thing about television in 2012 was that there were hundreds of channels, and they all had 525,600 minutes of airtime to fill this year, which means that just as there were times that everything went right, there were also plenty of chances for everything to go wrong.

Correction, Dec. 28 2012: This article initially punctuated the sexy wife's punchline with an exclamation point. She doesn't exclaim; she admonishes slyly. (Return.)

KUMPULAN ARTIKEL BAHASA INGGRIS Psychology Analysis of ...

    By Stephen F. Myler

    Abstract
????????????? Art therapy is not just for children but can be applied to adults with brain injury or impairment. However in this paper I would like to discuss the analysis of art produced by children who are troubled with psychological problems stemming from family discord. Dysfunctional families are now more common than abusive ones. Abusive families tend to get the media attention but dysfunctional is harder to quantify for the media and so mainly ignored. When treating children, art therapy can give insights were direct communication is almost impossible. Many child therapists however cannot analyze children's art from a scientific point of view and so this paper is to give some basic directions to those interested in the mind of a child through art.

    Introduction
For art therapy to be understood the therapist or teacher needs to have some basic insight into child psychology from past experimental work that gave direction to our modern thought. The first would be Vygotsky's position of child cognitive development. The first being his stated position on language development. That a child has limited reasoning during the early years as it does not have the language skills to express complex logic. The second is scaffolding, that a child given the basics of an idea or concept can build upon it without further direct instruction through trial and error learning over time. What both these insights tell us is that a young child cannot communicate complex emotional feelings clearly until nearing their teenage developmental stages. (1 Vygotsky 1962) Chomsky in the USA later supported Votgotskys idea when he proposed a language acquisition devise in the brain at birth. (LAD). Chomsky stated that unlike any other animal on the planet humans have language that develops faster than can be explained through everyday learning. That if you take an American baby and give it at birth to a Japanese couple to raise, it will eventually speak only Japanese. The language the brain is exposed to at birth is the one it develops over time. (2 Chomsky 1968)

Later in the 1950's Piaget (3 Piaget 1973) who had know about Votgosky's work used many of his ideas to develop his own theory of cognitive stages of development in children. Although he disagreed with Votgoskys stance on language he did devise many useful experiments to show a staged developmental cognition. The one part we are interested in from an art therapy point of view is ego-centrism. Piaget made a paper mache three mountains on a table. (We would refer to a 3D model today). He asked young children to look at the mountains and watch figures moving about such as man, woman, child for example. In front of the child were a series of photographs showing the mountain model from several angles and views? The child was asked to watch the figures and then point to the photo from the figures point of view, where they were placed. Most children under seven always chose the photo that best displayed not the figures point of view but there own. In other words the child could only see the world from its perspective and not other peoples. This was termed ego-centric and lasted until the child was old enough to de-centre through the acquisition of empathy. (Note, cultures such as China have a lack of empathy in their psychology mainly due to a lack of social learning in the family. So many are still ego-centric well into their 20's.) In the UK Margaret Donaldson went on the redesign Piaget's original experiment with the policeman and naughty boy model. This was much more culturally acceptable to children unfamiliar with mountains as Swiss children would have been. Donaldson concluded that children in the UK at least, de-centered earlier. This maybe part of the British character of easy international adaptation to environment changes. (4 Donaldson 1978)

The two main child theories above then start our thinking into art analysis by giving us a basic insight into child communication and development. Obviously the theories are more complex and deeper than I have explained here and need to be learned more thoroughly by the therapist. These ideas are merely pointers to interpretation of the uncommunicative child though art.

    The How To:
Children are wary of strangers and particularly men. There are two reasons for this, first strangers in a child's world represent a threat and therefore create an alarm reaction. In babies this may be crying in older children under seven this maybe social learning, parents and teachers giving warnings about talking to strangers in the street. Secondly where children are brought up by unemotional parents they accept strangers more easily than those from caring emotional families. It is their nature to seek a caring bond and attention even if this might be negative such as being punished. (Skinner 1960 - operant conditioning).

With the above in mind in order for the child to be happy and willing to draw for the therapist is can be useful to allow a familiar person to give the instruction such as the primary school teacher that takes the child everyday. If the child is from a dysfunctional family the parents are the last people you need to help. Remember abusive parents often present children to doctors with complaints from a position of care (Muchenhousin disease by proxy). Therefore if the child is troubled and in mental anguish then until you knows otherwise, suspect everyone and use instructors away from the child's normal carers.

A simple step by step approach to drawing production is the best way.

    1. Have paper, A3, is best with assortment of drawing materials, pencils, crayons and any other suitable markers. Have a table and chair that is comfortable for the child's age - not to high - the floor is OK for children if suitably dressed.

    2. The adult who is giving instructions should be face to face beside the child. This means at the child's height and eye level. Adults should kneel or sit where there are at the same height level. This takes away some of the domination structures and allows for a more equal approach to the child.

    3. Ask the child to draw their family in front of their home. The reason this is always a good start as the positioning is very important. Also how the child perceives their living space.

    4. Give the child plenty of time; tell them there is no rush to finish. Most children complete the task in about ten minutes. Some take longer who want to elaborate their drawing with colour and detail.

    5. Thank the child and promise to return their drawing to them later, this is important as the child puts value in their creativity and will want to show significant others in their life such as other siblings or parents.
    Analysis Approach
Again a step by step approach is the most effective way to start.
    1. Take an overview. What is the initial impression? Is the child's drawing compatible with their age? Is it immature, undefined, lack of care in production etc? Is it well constructed for their age, showing imagination and the grasp of concepts? (For example does smoke bend out of a chimney or go straight up. This would indicate the concept of wind for example.)

    2. Look at family positioning, does the child put themselves at the centre of the group (perhaps ego-centric) are they slightly apart? Are bothers and sisters placed differently, is one parent further apart that the other. All these can give insight into the family dynamics. Are they in height order? Are they smiling or frowning? Look at body proportions - this can indicate power plays. Finally look for any unusual details in the family that may give rise to questions.

    3. Look at the periphery, how is the home drawn, is there a path, is it accurate? Has the child put things in the windows? Are there additional objects such as a car, bicycle, swing, gate etc.? All these objects may give rise to insight from later questions.

    4. Once you have come to your initial conclusions write them down. Then ask two other non-professional people to look at the drawing and give you their initial impressions. This can lead to seeing something we missed or did not consider. Lay people are not hampered by knowledge. Then re-look at your own initial analysis and decide if you need to revise it slightly. Do not be too influenced by your lay observers they may also have internal perspectives that tend to objectify their ability to see the child's point of reference.

    5. Take the drawing back to the child and ask simple gentle questions. Tell the child you are very impressed by their effort. Then ask about the objects first, what they mean to the child. The car for instance. This is better as it lets the child de-center from the family to begin with. Look for the significance the child puts in objects and cultural learning.

    6. Ask the child about the family, who is who (even though this may be obvious) let the child explain. In what order does he talk about the family members, does he forget someone, what is the positioning in the picture; ask why someone is further away - or holding hands, etc. Where is he/she in relation to the parents, siblings etc. This may indicate relationship problems or highlights.

    7. Finally, rethink your original notes in line with the child's self-report. What differed, what was highlighted, what insights did you discover?
Once the process is over then the work of applying theory to the analysis gives you the final overview and insight into your drawing. This should then be presented in a report of three parts. First a paragraph or two on the child's presenting problems and family situation. Second, the initial analysis of the artwork from your findings and impressions. Third your theoretical insight from a psychological point of reference.
This last part should include your recommendations for educational support, teacher insight and therapeutic intervention of required.
Often once a meeting with the teacher and parents has been convened to discuss the child's situation then the next steps in support can be agreed upon. Where the parents are the problem, this then is best left to the psychologist as an outsider to meet with them as an authoritarian figure to enable open dialogue.

    Experience
It takes time and quite a few attempts with children of various ages to build up the skill of art therapy and interpretation. It is not always so obvious what the child is trying to communicate through their art. Also take into account the scientific bias of the participants and analysis. It is easy to project your own ideas of child situations instead of being objective. As any good therapist knows you leave your own ego at the door. Children are vulnerable, easily influenced and directed by skillful manipulators and so abuse goes undetected for many children. Caution should be advised before taking a child's art impression to a legal standpoint.

    Real example.
A child was presented at school as disruptive, violent and attention seeking. His teachers wanted to expel him from the school. He is 8 years old and often attacks teachers by kicking them from behind.
The child drew a picture of his standing between his parents holding his hands up keeping the two apart who are seen shouting at each other. The child in the drawing is crying and angry.
Life was so difficult at home having to play the role of parent to his parents that at school he acted out to compensate for his misery at home. He saw teachers as other parents and so needed to punish them. He needed attention at school even if negative in order to fulfill his need for love.
In a meeting with the mother, she was shocked to see how her son found family life. It was agreed that future arguments between her husband and herself should be conducted out of the child's hearing or presence. That a calmer atmosphere should be strived for over time.
The child within two weeks had calmed down and started to be more cooperative and although he relapsed from time to time he was much happier in class and cooperative.
This example is straight forward and much more detail came from the drawing than this conclusion, but it gives you the general idea.

    In Summery
Art therapy can be informative as part of a wider approach to child psychology and in particularly therapy situations where a child has presenting problems to tackle. Art allows a child to communicate through visual imagery which is cognitively more developed under seven years than verbal skills, reasoning and conceptual thought.
A professional psychologist should always do the analysis and not a counsellor. The reason is more a question of wider knowledge and training that most counselors in schools have. It is also important to be holistic with children and see if other factors such as diet, bullying or trauma might have an influence on his artistic impressions.

Paul Daley out of Bellator tournament after problems with visa arise

Paul Daley's next shot in MMA has hit a roadbump. The British fighter, who was cut from the UFC after he threw a cheap shot after the bell at Josh Koscheck in 2010, is out of Bellator's welterweight tournament. He can't enter the United States because of issues getting a work visa.

ESPN reports Daley was involved in a bar brawl and was charged with assault, which is the problem with the visa. Daley denies the brawl, and says via his Facebook page it was just a problem with his visa.

It seems as though (sp) a mass press release has gone out to the MMA media stating I was involved (in a) bar brawl, arrested, and cannot obtain a P-1 visa to compete in the USA. I am currently awaiting a decision on my visa, which is not expected until late April. Which means I am unable to compete in the season 8 Bellator tournament, as it starts in January. I will be fighting in Europe in the coming months, so I am able to stay active while awaiting a decision on my visa status. I was not involved in a bar brawl. This is 100-percent a false statement.

Previously, Daley has fought in the United States for Bellator, Strikeforce and the UFC without any visa issues.

SQUEEZING AND SUCKING BREASTS PREVENT BREAST CANCER

This will definitely interest the Guys(Evil grin).

Scientists have discovered that squeezing breasts can prevent, uh, breast cancer??

?I?ll run some tests.?A little squeeze may be all that it takes to prevent malignant breast cells triggering cancer, research has shown.

Laboratory experiments showed that applying physical pressure to the cells guided them back to a normal growth pattern.

Scientists do not envisage fighting breast cancer with a new range of compression bras, but they believe the research provides clues that could lead to new treatments.

?People have known for centuries that physical force can influence our bodies,? said Gautham Venugopalan, a leading member of the research team at the University of California in Berkeley, United States.

?When we lift weights our muscles get bigger. The force of gravity is essential to keeping our bones strong. Here we show that physical force can play a role in the growth ? and reversion ? of cancer cells.

?All joking aside, this is actually pretty fascinating?as long as you don?t place too much stock in it. It seems like every day we?re bombarded with a new and different way to lower the risk of cancer. I?ve heard over the past year measures that make less and less sense, from? cooking red meat the right way, to avoiding Tupperware, to cutting out diet soda. In other words, you can?t just go around constantly grabbing boobs because there?s a 0.1% chance that it might ?help? women.

Does it mean all those who have had breast cancer in the past didn?t have it sucked well and hard enough ?hmmmm!

7 Advanced Social Media Marketing Strategies

This is a guest post by Tim at HostPapa.

Social media gives businesses large and small an unprecedented opportunity to build community around their business. Learn to leverage these tools to maximum effect with these 7 advanced social media marketing strategies. Advanced strategies go a step (or several) beyond simply showing up in the social media sphere to introduce and then reinforce marketing messages that prompt users to take desired actions.

    #1 Defining Your SMM Philosophy

It?s incredible how many SMM managers will leap to advanced strategies before tackling the basics, which is why we?ve placed one of the fundamental and most overlooked basics of SMM first in this list of advanced SMM strategies.

Just as your business operates around a focused, defined mission, so too must your social media marketing revolve around a centralized SMM philosophy. To define this philosophy, take a look first at your market, your audience. Most often, this audience will actually be comprised of many smaller, sometimes overlapping market niches, or segments. Identify these segments and divide your audience accordingly, so that you may tailor your messages to each of these segments individually.

Next place yourself in empathy with each of these market segments, identifying each of their needs, desires, fears, hopes, dreams, etc. And ask yourself how you can add insight and promote action toward fulfilling their desires, abating their fears, and above all prompting action. Finally, make sure that your SMM philosophy authentically represents you and promotes honesty and transparency in all your SMM messages.

    #2 Optimizing Platforms

Social media platforms are the different networks where social interaction occurs (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.). The audiences for each of these platforms is different, as are the interfaces and the methods or types of interactions taking place on those platforms. This means your Facebook messages and your LinkedIn messages, for example, should not be the same, but rather custom tailored for maximum visibility and positive effect on each respective platform.

Once you post a message in social media, that?s not the end of it; on the contrary, your work on that message is only just beginning. Optimizing platforms means adapting your messages to best suit 1) each market segment, and 2) each social media platform. It also means staying on top of the performance of your messages. To accomplish this, determine your key performance indicators (KPI) for determining this positive effectiveness of your messages and then track each message accordingly. Likewise, track new and evolving platforms to see which ones could benefit you or your market.

    #3 Refining Your Voice

You are not your business. And your business is not like every other business in your industry. That means the way that you speak about your business should be unique to your specific business. Your voice should reflect your mission and your SMM philosophy, and build rapport with your audience.

Start by listening to how your audience speaks and listens to each other. Then refine your voice to sound sweetest to their ears. Make sure the words you use, the syntax and cadences, are relevant to their expectations. And be consistent in how you present yourself.

Determine whether your business would best be served by utilizing a single voice or multiple voices. And minimize the amount of automated posting and cross-posting that you do in order to avoid sounding like a robot. Rather than being an evangelist for your business, try being a brand manager instead.

    #4 Using Multimedia

When they say ?Content is King? they?re not kidding; but don?t fooled into believing that content is purely textual. An original, unique and high-value article based on your observations and analysis of goals and trends that incorporates relevant references is worth its weight in?kilobytes(??) But so is an equally stellar audio podcast, YouTube video, or Powerpoint presentation. Look at the near-instant popularity of the relatively recent arrival on the SMM scene ? Pinterest ? to see just what we mean. Truly, an image these days is worth 1,000 MB.

What to create multimedia about? Besides your products and services (360 degree images, tutorials, troubleshooters, etc.), you might also benefit from giving your audience insight into your company culture. Give a video tour of your office. Post photos of office events (and if you don?t have any office events, create some for just this purpose).

#5 Integrating Online & Offline Advertising

One of the greatest and most underused assets for online marketing is offline marketing. All too often, marketing managers segregate their online efforts from their offline efforts, and never the ?twain shall meet. But with social media comes an effortless way to merge these efforts seamlessly. Why? Because social media is all about community. And community building existed LONG before the advent of the Internet.

So how do you do this? Integrating online advertising with your offline advertising is as simple as including the URL for your blog or Facebook page, for example, to your print, radio and cable ads. You can even add incentives for people to visit those sites (see more on Incentivizing below). This provides what?s called ?social proof? for your business; that is, it shows people up front that you indeed have a sizable community surrounding your business already. People always want to hop aboard a hot, fast and forward-moving bandwagon, and this presents them with just that opportunity.

Consider that SMM isn?t all about making sales or conversions. Sure, that?s the ultimate goal, but perhaps not always the initial one. Wouldn?t it be even better than making a sale right now to get a new member to join your community first who then later on makes multiple sales?

    #6 Incentivizing Messages

We just mentioned incentivizing your SMM efforts, so we might as well get into it next. By incentivizing we mean giving back to your customers as a Thank You for taking some sort of simple (usually free) action. A person may not be so quick to send you money for a product or service, but they may have no aversion to Liking your Facebook page, subscribing to your YouTube channel, Following you on Twitter, etc. Especially if they get a reward for it.

All these actions cost your audience nothing, and unlike in the rest of the consumer world, with incentivized SMM they actually can get something for nothing. What do we mean by incentives? Discounts on products and services or contest/raffle entries, to name just two.

Other actions you can incentivize in this manner include Sharing posts or articles, or even commenting on them. If you can manage to hit on the right incentive rightly presented at the right time, your incentive itself can go viral.

    #7 Going Local

The Internet bestows all users with a global reach, but some of your best leads and business opportunities exist right in your own backyard (or front!). And the fact of the matter is, the Internet can help you reach out to those leads closest to you just as easily as it can help you reach across the planet.

What are your geographic demographics? Even if you don?t have a brick-and-mortar element of your business, that doesn?t mean you don?t still have specific geographic locales where your business is most relevant, most needed. Typically, this area is right where you run your business from: in the same area as your headquarters.

You already know to find groups, communities, forums and other such social networks online that are focused on your specific areas of expertise; now do the same for your specific geographic areas of influence. Join these communities, and if they don?t exist, consider starting your own. Discover the online directories that your competitors use and link yourself up with them too.

And if there is a brick-and-mortar component to your business, then make sure you?re listed as well in Google Maps and other popular mapping/GPS sites. Maximize your visibility on these sites by providing all your contact information and a direct link to your own website (or Facebook page, etc.).
